edit - this is also clearly why austin was told he has to stop having podcasts not about videogames since i'm sure vice.com/movies or whatever has a movie podcast and /tv has a TV podcast, etc etc (austin didn't seem super pleased about this on the beastcast the other week)
I believe the person who hired Austin (Ciel Hunter I believe), left Vice recently (within the year) and the new one is putting their stamp on the digital side of Vice.

I'm not surprised a new CEO is trying to push for changes just because.
Vice took on a lot of investment to fund all its growth (i.e. more verticals, shows, etc.) and didn't end up profitable. I imagine they're trying to increase visits by consolidating everything into a single recognizable brand, or so marketing would say.

I don't think it's fair to call them "just because" changes, given how VICE has been doing recently.
The brand I'm there for is Austin (with Patrick&co acting as multipliers). If that crew just bails and, I dunno, start a Patreon or something, I am so there. Especially if it means more content that doesn't get views, because that's my jam.
I just want them to be successful. I was happy when they went to Vice even though it meant Austin wasn't at Giant Bomb anymore because with all that money behind them they could do a lot of cool stuff. And they have. But now we're being reminded that sometimes all that money has hooks attached.

Games journalism seems like a terrible and zero security business to be in.

Austin, Patrick, Danielle, and Rob is the ideal format. I'll follow them anywhere.
Sounds like Danielle has to wear another hat to keep her spot...
Black lives matter.

I honestly haven’t kept up with a lot of the Vice media stuff, other than being aware of the most generic information. But it doesn’t sound like Waypoint has panned out the way Austin expected and/or hoped.
I hope it all works out for that crew because they are all very talented.
Granted I don’t know his duties at GB were that we didn’t see but I never really understood what Austin was/is doing at Waypoint/Vice that he couldnt do at GB.
Aside from the EIC position itself which seems like it means ment meetings less writing

He got to assemble and oversee his own team and run a website focused specifically around his philosophy of what he thinks games journalism should be.
Being in charge and executing your own vision with a team of your choosing can be a very big motivator for someone like Austin.

I love Giant Bomb but... Austin is much more intellectual than most of the GB crew. That's what he was trying to build.
Same reason Patrick left; GB really isn't a written word news website anymore, if it ever really was. Especially in regards to more political coverage. When GG broke out, GB's coverage was basically relegated to the morning show he had with Alex. That situation didn't really change much by the time Austin passed through.

Also he got fuckin' paid.
The only way to get a raise in journalism (or really anything if you want > COL) is to get a new job.
Austin clearly would love to be in a position where he can find all kind of niche ppl to write an interesting article that he would love to write himself if he had 100 lifetimes to live, and then pay that person; and that seems to be his goal and he has gotten to do that to probably a greater extent then a lot of similar publications. Hopefully he gets to keep doing it

The Italian's Job was a great suggestion, it is my new Alex Effect as names that should have been.
I honestly would be surprised to see Vice Gaming still there in a year
While I don't disagree I also feel like you could've said this about Waypoint every year.
oh 100%
yes but with a slight correction

On the latest podcast Austin said he thinks his new title means he's in the union now, so it sounds like the EiC's have already been culled.

Reading her thread about it, it seems like Natalie might have gotten another gig, and this was at least partially unrelated.
Yes, she says on the podcast that she received a job offer

Nah, the corrections section started when Austin was on, and before Dan joined.
