wait is elite a proper synchronous multiplayer game? I thought it was like, asynchronous multiplayer where you never actually saw or met other players

When you don't actually need it to be, it is a proper synchronous multiplayer game; when you want to play with friends or see specific people it suddenly becomes an asynchronous multiplayer game. At least for actually seeing or meeting with your friends.

It's fully multiplayer with a (still online) solo mode that exists in the same world but without any players. You can also create private instances in the same universe where only people you invite exist.

    Everything about this is amazing.
This takes time, and it means that the commander had spent about 600 hours of real-time reaching this place.

That is not accurate. I guess it would take 30 hours of just jumping to get there.

Because of the way Elite Dangerous ships work, you can’t “jump” out to this distant place like you would normally travel between stars. You have to travel in a slower manner, called supercruise. This takes time, and it means that the commander had spent about 600 hours of real-time reaching this place. With enough fuel, he would have been able to jump straight back. But now, he wasn’t able to get back at all. He also had not beaten the record set by his rival, commander Kenneth McGrew. A pilot who has travelled 65,804 lightyears from our dinky little sun.

To be fair that's like the least engaged gameplay imaginable, it's literally just turning your thrusters on and then leaving the game to run. In fact, you could turn flight assist off and not even have the engine running, just drift. The only fuel drain for that is systems/oxygen etc. Which you know, you need. I guess.

Say what you will about EA but I had a problem with my origin account and got in their chat and they quickly resolved it. Ubisoft took like 3 weeks to resolve an issue last time I had one.

it looks like they're going to the last star on the rim of the galaxy, and then just supercruising in a direction.....

when will someone make a space game that has content in it

Breaking news: Okami is still a really good game. I really wish the port was a bit better, though. 30fps framelock is okay, the animation looks fluid, but what really, really sucks is the draw distance. Bushes, digging spots etc pop in so close to you that you really have to walk across every inch of the map to see if something's there instead of just pointing the camera that way. 8[

It still looks great, though. And the music! I forgot how fantastic the soundtrack is

    FNG games for 2/21 - 2/24

2/21 TNG (4 pm PST): Stardew Valley MP
    2/22 FNG (4 pm PST): Vermintide 2
2/23 SaNG (4 pm PST): The Division
2/24 SuNG (7 pm PST): Undecided

SuNG was a bust this last week. I guess I thought too much of The Forest or people just want to chill on Sunday evening.

Will take any recommendations for SuNG this week though or may just return it to Astroneer or just suspend it unless there is some interest to have it one week.

So Epic’s refund process seems a bit more involved than Steam’s effectively autonomous one, but they seem to be a bit more flexible.

I had 4 hours in Metro Exodus and, after I submitted my refund request, I got an actual email from a support rep who asked for a few details on my experience and then processed my refund.

I don't think there's a greater schism in my brain regarding entertainment vs reality than "Intergalactic exploration" vs "There are already more stars in this galaxy alone than mankind will ever explore, and that's if FTL travel is even possible"

I personally prefer Elite, but they are EXTREMELY different games.

Go with NMS if you prefer having a crafting/building loop.

Go with Elite if you think you’ll enjoy just being in space and the tactile experience of flying a ship.

here's a little game demo where you play an anime barrista:

    yBeP8KI.png
In the demo for coffeeshop AU!, you will be able to get a feel for what may go on in this charming (and sometimes explosive) atmosphere. You will choose between different colored cans of coffee, as well as the amount of milk to put in. You can also select the barista to go with the coffee to get a bonus to the ‘coffee’ stat. Once you’re satisfied with your combination of stats (displayed in the upper right), you can serve it up to your customer. If they’re pleased with what you’ve come up with, they’ll react happily. If they aren’t, well, you’ll be able to tell.

is Kidd being a woman or afab supposed to be something that isn't obvious or that the characters don't know? I didn't even know they were supposed to be female until I noticed characters using male pronouns to refer to them.

NMS and Elite: Dangerous both fizzled out on me for the same reasons. At some point, I need a narrative reason, characters, or just some interesting backstory to discover to care about the world I'm playing in.

with NMS i hit a point where I was making these awesome giant bases but then all of a sudden I was like "..... okay but what do I do with it...?"

I have similar complaints about Kerbal Space program actually. I know the main deal of that game is making rockets and getting to places. But I really liked the challenge of making self sustaining bases / systems of bases on far off planets and moons. Designing your own bases and ships, the challenge of actually assembling it all in orbit or on planets, that stuff was great. But then I would have it built and all of a sudden I was like "....okay but what do I do with it....?"
