Yes, the casket where you would pop out of the wall and surprise mourners was very popular in the “prank rush” of the late 19th century.

My favorite one is the one that would just have you in an above ground glass case for like a week after death.

So if you woke up or whatever, you could break out of it (or someone could let you out), but if the gravekeepers noticed that you were starting to putrefy and rot, they could pull a level and just drop you down into the grave that had already been dug below.

Bioware was dead the moment EA forced them to pivot off of their normal properties. They're not getting back to those games. Either Anthem is a success and Bioware is relegated to games-as-a-service moneystreaming for the rest of their existence, or it's a "failure"(aka anything less than big success) and they're cannibalized.

I'd love to be wrong on this, but we're 100% reading off of the standard publisher playbook right now, I don't see any chance EA will somehow diverge from the script this one time just because it's Bioware.

    That's what I assume, yeah.

To be fair I didn't call it before, because Dragon Age never did it for me (only tried the first one), so I wouldn't know if those games were declining like ME did

Anthem is literally the brainchild of Casey Hudson, who is about as Bioware as you can get for better or worse

There may be parts of Anthem that EA dictated, for sure, but Anthem is absolutely a Bioware joint from inception, not something EA forced them to do

And they advertised Dragon Age 4 at TGA just a few months ago

The narrative that EA is forcing Bioware to make games that aren't in their established franchises or genres is objectively not true

    Dragon Age is good.

Inquisition was a lot of people’s game of the year that year. It doesn’t quite hold up with how quickly open worlds have improved the last few years but it was very very well received.

2 was rushed, which led to some technical issues and reused assets, but you’ll find a lot of love for the smaller, more personal story. Especially here.

Maybe it's a console thing(?) but I'm still baffled why so many third-person games have a locked perspective (i.e. over shoulder or above and behind the head) when MMOs have allowed free camera movement for literal decades.

Its because the combat of an MMO and the combat of a 3rd person shooter, especially one with an emphasis on movement like Anthem, have very different camera needs despite both being 3rd person

Jim Sterling's rantings about EA and BioWare made what seemed to me a pretty good point.

EA has the rights to make Star Wars games.

BioWare made Knights of the Old Republic.

So where is KotOR 3? Seriously, where the fuck is it? Why isn't it? This is a such a no-brainer it's ridiculous.

And yes I know people say that the Old Republic MMO was KotOR 3 but fuck that who cares. Do it again, but better. Like it was meant to be. MMO's don't count.

Did you guys have instantly strong feeling about "Reapers" and "The Citadel" before you played Mass Effect for the first time?

You have to actually play the game and read about stuff before things mean anything

If those things sound boring though why would I want to read about them?
I am not saying Anthem is as well written or interesting as Mass Effect, cause it ain't

But divorced of context, meaning without being familiar with ME, I don't see how Reapers or The Citadel or Spectres are any more interesting sounding than the Anthem and Dominion and Freelancers

The problem isn't Proper Nouns, its just that Anthem ain't particularly good once you learn what those Nouns are

The difference is that the names in Mass Effect and Dragon Age are names. They're words that immediately indicate discrete, concrete things. The words in Anthem are just a cloud of obscuring smoke.

A codex entry in Mass Effect reads like "The Reapers are a hypothetical race of machine entities that, according to the myths of various civilizations in the galaxy, are responsible for periodic mass extinctions." Or "The Citadel is a massive space station and the seat of galactic government." There's a straightforward connection between the name and the concept.

My friend has read a bunch of the Anthem entries aloud to me and it's all iike "The Psychers were called forth by the power of the Third Verse during the Night Age to battle the Spiritmonger and the armies of the Desolation but were corrupted by the Weltschmerz and forced to retreat underground to the Deep Havens while awaiting the Synecdoche."

It's just meaningless nouns pointing to other meaningless nouns in an endless, obscurantist onion; the mimicry of significance, rather than the substance. It could mean something, but the connective tissue has been left out. There's nothing concrete to get a hold of. It's just words that sound like things video games say.

yeah, this is what playing Destiny was like, too

Destiny has some really great lore though.

Terrible at telling a story in game or presenting that lore in a way that connects with your gameplay experience, but still, great lore.

Likely because KotOR isn't as huge of a name as folks think it is (it obviously has q devoted following of fans but that doesn't mean much compared to how big of an audience something like Battlefront was targeting) and making a third one 15 years after the most recent one is a bad idea in terms of marketability, since they are such a narrative focused series of games.

Now obviously Bioware could just make a different Star Wars RPG and I would play that but I also wouldn't be surprised if Bioware would rather do their own shit since they have exclusively done their own IPs since they made that Sonic DS game 11 years ago.

basically, remember when people were cautiously optimistic about Riticcelo tenure as head of EA and they tried taking risks on new properties and stuff and there were promises this would be a different EA?

well most of those games bombed terribly and here we are.

even then you still have stuff like DICE getting to make a second Mirror's Edge game.

Seriously though I'm giving thought to the idea that the ME3 ending stuff basically broke them and they became way too hyper-sensitive to fan backlash.

and thus Inquisition basically had too much stuff to do in reaction to DA2 and Anthem had the trappings of a more narrative game smushed into the design doc for an action game late in development.

Blizzard sold to a company called Davidson and Associates in 1994 (before they were even known as Blizzard), who in turn sold themselves to a company called CUC International (Under the CUC Software label) in 1996. CUC, in turn, merged with Hospitality Franchise Systems in 1997 to create Cendant, who in turn were bought by french company Havas in 1998, who were either already owned or were quickly bought out by Vivendi in that same year.

Fast foward to 2007 when Activison merged with Vivendi Games to make Activision-Blizzard.
