[HDTV on] Lil Bro + Brand New HDTV + Wii = Another Brand new HDTV
The_SpaniardIt's never lupinesIrvine, CaliforniaRegistered Userregular
Long story short; While I wasn't home my little brother went into my room and used my fairly new 46" Samsung DLP HDTV without my permission to play with my Wii without my permission. The result is me now getting another new TV on his (read: my parents) dime.
My Samsung cost me $950 (1150 out the door) and as I said before it was a 46" DLP. It is a freestanding model that is 1080i. Model number HL-S4676S.
So now what I'm looking for is a comparable television. No less than 46", it must be a DLP and frankly now that I have a second chance I'd like to go 1080p. Would it be possible to find that with a price cap of a bout 1300 give or take? Oh also since my parents are paying for the replacement they demand one of those, no payments for a year or no interest deals if you can find something like that.
If you guys don't mind I'd really appreciate some help with a bit of research before I get ANOTHER new TV.
Soo in closing.. OUENDAN!
Did he break your old TV? Or you just get a new one because he used yours? Madness....
Well, anyway, I have a 62" 1080p Samsung DLP. The Samsung DLPs are still good. I would say go for another. Maybe the 50". You can definitely get one for around that price. Check on Amazon, I got mine online (not from Amazon, from some other place, I forget), but Amazon does returns now on big TVs so it's a safe bet.

No.. after being told since the day the Wii came out to use the wrist strap every single time he used it as well as being told by Wii Sports to use it every time he started the game, guess what he didn't do?

I'm assuming Wiimote went through TV :P
That sir, while sad for your TV and wiimote, wins. best thread so far today.
To clarify. Buy a new TV, and get your parents to throw in a lockable door knob while their at it.
I do actually feel bad for you. Id cry if I had a 46" tv wrecked like that.

I screamed uncontrollably and hysterically for several minutes while jumping up and down.
I'm going to hijack your thread temporarily to say that I bought component cables for my Wii for use on our new 32" LG HD tv. And I am very unimpressed.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
Good strength of character if you didn't throw him through the TV. I'd say check out the Samsung 5087 model, but it's a bit more expensive than your budget. It is pure sex in a box, though. My dad has one and I get sick to my stomach with jealousy when I go over to his place.
Ouch. That sucks. Okay, maybe I lied, a 50" 1080p is a bit over 1300 from Samsung.. (like the HL-S5087W).. (I have the 61" version of that, it rules).
But the 720p is under that price.

Ok with just a 10 minute search I found these two TVs which I can obviously shop around and find cheaper prices, but I'm wondering what you guys think about them. Also feel free to link your own recommendations.
It would cost at least half the price of the TV to replace the screen and my parents would rather just buy a new one and keep the cracked screen for themselves because it's something that would not bother them as much. I guess I really made out in this situation.
I know this may be ridiculous, but what about getting a projector? There's very little damage you can do to a wall when hitting it with a remote. A nice 720p projector should be around $850, giving you enough money for a new bulb and a screen to cover the difference.

I don't know about these models particularly, but I currently own a Toshiba LCD TV and it's spectacular. I would recommend Toshiba pretty much anything at this point.

Projectors are the devil. This is my TV watching game playing TV not something that I would use in short bursts as a project should be.

So can anybody tell me the difference between these two TVs?
Samsung 56inch 1080p with the newer LED engine so it doesn't have the color wheel and the effects that it can cause. It comes out to $1795 but it has free shipping.

The long answer is.. yes.
My in-laws were over at the house the other day and I got dirty looks when I made sure my mother in law had the remote strap secured. I was like "WHAT? I don't want that remote going through the tv." I know my father in law appreciated not having to buy me a new tv.
To get back to the original post, are you set on DLP? If not, check out the Vizio LCDs at Costco and/or Sams. I have a 37" LCD and its gorgeous. To go 1080p you will need to hit the 47" set (http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=20), but man is it hawt. Dual HDMI, VGA, and removable speakers. I am sticking with Vizio for TVs for the foreseeable future. Costco has a 90 day money back satisfaction guarantee on TVs too. The set is MSRP at $1699, but I think Costco might have it a bit cheaper than that. They have been dropping prices on the Vizio sets pretty regularly these days.

Yeah I'm really going for DLP, though I do appreciate the advice.
Whenever stuff like this happens, I always feel sorry for the person who broke whatever it was, because in most cases they are genuinely shit scared of having to tell the person that they broke it. I've been in that situation myself.
Sometimes the person doesn't give a damn at all and doesn't care that they broke shit, in which case I hope they burn in hell.
I have a 56" Samsung DLP which definitely rocks my socks, though it might be a bit above the range you're looking for. As I recall, the 50" was pretty close to that mark, though..
Regardless, one place you might look to buy is Circuit City (where I got mine). Keep an eye out for a promotion that catches your eye, as they have a good mix of them. They tend to change the offer at least once a week, and you can see the current one on their website. I got my set with free delivery and setup, and a free 5.1 sound system. Often they'll do deals along the lines of $250 off.
Their return policy seems pretty solid (and if you order online, you can keep an eye out of price drops at PriceProtectr), and they have a relatively good deal for the warranty plan. Also, I've seen lots of mention about a no-intrest-for-a-year type plan, but I don't know if that's a regular option, or one of the deals that floats in.
Amazon had lower prices when I was looking, but their DOA policy was a bit frightening. I believe I heard that they've reformed it to be much more friendly since then, so they definitely might be worth a looksy, too.

The odyssey is not yet over. TV came and it is gorgeous and everything. Day after I got it, it started fucking up something nasty. Tomorrow repair man comes for the second time.
