a lot of responses to some of the quirkier NPCs tend to fall along the lines of thinking you're better than them and it's annoying

But you are better than they are... You're out there doing their work for them and the fort, they get to be safe and sane while you risk your life. Like I'm sorry Raylan Givens gets to give Tim some shit when he brings some more work to my desk!

And I let her? Like I encouraged her to pet all the weird animals just safely. Sounds like you didn't like how you played your freelancer bro. A chanus specific problem...

Agree with Preacher, I like my Lancer. The only time I felt the game was being harsher than I anticipated with the Lancer's comments was with....
Owen, but the story's gotta story, so it makes sense in retrospect.

I only regret my answers with Amal because I believe it cut that one short.

Anyone else having issues on PC with Anthem just not shutting down properly? I've had a lot of issues where it just hangs on a black screen when I exit and I have to force it to quit. Sometimes I force it to quit and it just...hides? Like I quit Anthem yesterday and had been playing some other games, and just noticed Discord said I was playing Anthem. It wasn't in my task tray, but there it was running in the background and taking up 35% of my CPU. What the fuck?

I had that happen to me one time last night.

Even the encouraging options, which I chose, are very much "tolerate this annoying guy" and "this conversation is not worth my time"

I am always the goody two shoes character and the PC seems a big smug.

I should say that I love the character and personality but yeah, I can see where the feedback is coming from.

I did too, and I liked that thread. We're responding to lots of little dickish moments from the guy, usually tied to responses that you can't control. It's a progressive feeling that this guy is just a little too smug.

That's my thing. His conversations with Owen were a part of it, but I have had multiple moments where the guy starts throwing shade on people out of nowhere despite which responses I chose.

Like, I really appreciated Space Asshole Shephard. She gets shit done, knows when to use violence as a punchline, and is gleefully psychotic when she decides to really fuck with people. This guy is just lukewarm nice or lukewarm asshole.

it felt like the options were basically supposed to be 1-friendly 2-serious/jerky

but often times it ended up being both were jerky, and the tone of a response was sometimes jarring in how it didn't feel at all like what the option i chose should have conveyed

You, the Freelancer, are a Fighter Pilot, and the writers are trying to capture the aggressive self-confidence of the Fighter Pilot. Read THE RIGHT STUFF by Tom Wolfe for an illustration of what that means. My buddy who just retired as an USMC Lieutenant Colonel loathes Fighter Pilots because they are such arrogant jerks. The only people he found harder to deal with were SEALs. Or as he calls them, "whiny prima donna bitches".

One thing I really do love about the writing is how grounded the world is. There is all this high SF tech, but the majority of the game revolves around the mundanity of the characters and life around the Fort. Makes it feel like a real place, and it is why I will keep coming back for more story.

For the most part that should show maximum DPS, right?

It's done me well so far but one heavy pistol I picked up yesterday that showed the highest DPS feels... subpar... maybe it's the style rather than the damage that doesn't jive with me.

I have no idea about that. I just use a gun and kill some stuff with it. Heavy pistols make their bread and butter on head shots/crit points, so if you're not a precise shooter heavy pistols might not synch up.

Also some of the guns like the two tap burst heavy pistol are just different enough from your normal play style it takes a second to line up.

Outside of two of the grenade launchers though I haven't really found a gun/masterwork I can't see the use of it. And that's with half of my killing done on the launch masterworks which would have some shitty affixes.

There is a weird like dichotomy (if thats the right word?) of like super high technology like javelins, walkers, most of the fire power we use in the game, alongside struggling to keep indoor farms going. Which makes sense in that the world feels like humanity in the ruins of gods just scraping to make by, while also constantly being at war with the remains of those absent gods.

That's what I'm super excited about with regards to Anthem, the mysteries the game has, and the lore we do know like stuff about the legion of dawn and general tarsis.

Once you get good with that double-tap pistol, it almost trivializes the game. I've got one with a fast reload perk, and I routinely score multiple multikills from the rate the mooks go down.

There's a nice subtle wordlbuilding in that, since this is alien technology that humanity adopted while their slaves, entire swathes of "human-centered" technological advances were skipped. The more "humane" the tech (like, say, tape recorders), the more likely that it is a retro piece to our eyes.

I'm really loving everything about the ranger except the grenades. I feel like I need to be super precise, which is the exact opposite of the reason to carry grenades. But everything else about the class is really fun. The interceptor wasn't able to pull me away from my colossus, but the ranger does.

yeah male freelancer sounds a lot more jokey, he's like ...ok lol, I guess its fine, while the female voice is more earnest. This was really notable in the conversations with Owen after
Faye arrives and the tension starts

because he's just trying to jovial tone his way through this awkward situation and it is really just not working. You can hear the disconnect between them so loudly
their tones don't match at all, you can clearly tell that Owen is not buying it and he's just sort of like yeah, bros, it's cool, don't worry.... when in reality he's already made his decision... and it's entirely in line with previous ones. You're not friends anymore, you're a mark and he's running a grift, same as he used to do.

Things don't get worked out until after Owen gets what he wants because now you're equals again in his eyes. I think this is probably a pattern with him, and I bet he ditched his old mentor who saved him from the gutter as well - hell, maybe he even killed her. Owen is fucking broken.

Yeah, it's mostly the cryo grenade. It's a slow wind up and a soft toss combined with a tiny radius. I try to use it to set up my own combos, but it just never lands. I do much better with incendiary. I don't need to spike it on the enemy to prime them.

Yeah I tend to use sticky, or the frag grenade. Sticky is more of a power than a greande in that it basically throws and hits exactly what you targeted. Frag is just a "fuck you flip" and rarely doesn't at least it something.

With grenades just tap the key. It’s a kind of quick throw that has a huge amount of auto-aim on it, it also seems to prioritise enemies with effects on them to trigger combos.

In terms of story, I do think the lore and world of anthem is intresting but I’m the kind of guy to sit down and read the lore. It’s a really good example why a lot of sci-fi/fantasy has a point of view character, someone who dosn’t know the world so people can info dump all the terms and phrases. It’s a bit of an overused trope but getting it right without something like that is really hard. Your character in anthem knows a scar is a swarm of bugs in a suit, that the teleport gates don’t have a 100% survival rate (which is why we don’t use them), he knows a cypher is a kind of phychic radio link in human form. It’s why it feels like a bunch of Important Captalised Words get thrown at you.

It’s like, if you’re an elf who wanders into our world and I tell you we need to get in The Car, drive down The Motorway, stop at MacDonalds and get a Big Mac. That’s a normal reasonable sentence to us but the elf would be confused as fuck.

Destiny also fell into the same trap, which is even weirder because your guardian knows nothing and they had plenty of chance to explain stuff.

Honestly it’s poor form to put basically a wiki in game for this stuff as a patch. As much as I personally love that stuff people have natural predelictions to absorbing information, some people are going to see that and be instantly turned off.
