I largely agree, though I'll say Gears of War is worth playing to set up the "feeling" of the franchise (and ironically, how much it's changed over time), and the story is short, amusing, and self-contained. There's some fun banther in there too, so it's not Call of Duty pointless.

The only thing that you miss out on from not playing the original trilogy (lol) is the bad guys have even less context to their already thin veneer of 'culture' and a lesser emotional impact by characters come and gone aka the "WHERE'S MYYY WIIIIIIFE" storyline
That said, they're all great games and if nothing else check out Gears 2 as it gets into some real nitty-gritty with incredibly diverse set pieces and delves into a lot about the Locust given the bulk of it is about taking the fight to their home
Gears 4's prologue is surprisingly good at setting up the setting and summating the most significant elements of the plot, though
So I'm at PAX and noticed I had a gap in my schedule. Not wanting to wander around the convention center for like 3 hours, I went over my schedule and noticed that Rod Fergusson was going to be at the Major Nelson panel, talking about Gears 5 (I had previously thought Gears 5 was a no show) so I figured I'd go. (Wish I had remembered to wear my COG tags, oh well)
Firstly, this proved to be a good idea as everyone in the audience got an exclusive PAX 2019 thumb pad for an elite controller (If I had one, that'd be cool) and Six Months of Gamepass Ultimate! Score! Anywho, Rod talked a lot of specifics for Gears 5 (I'll post a write-up in the Gears thread when I get a chance) and I really wish they had been talking about this stuff sooner, as it's very interesting and exciting. Then there was a Q&A; I had a question about how the Engineer worked with the new energy system (when energy is picked up, it goes into everyone's indivduals pool. (I.E. If someone picks up 100 energy, everyone on the team gets 100 energy in their own pool). Energy is used to build fortifications, but also for the in-match perk progression. I was curious how that was going to work with the Engineer, given they're usually the ones to build fortifications. (Turns out they don't get perks, which is interesting).
What I didn't know is that they were handing out gifts to anyone who asked a question, so I guess I now own one of these suckers.
Not bad for something I decided to go to at the last minute. .
EDIT: posting without a PC sometimes takes a couple of attempts
So for someone who has never played a gears game, but has game pass and access to all of them, is it worth it gameplay and story wise to start at the first game, or is there a better more recent jumping in point?
I played gears 1 way back, but me and my gf just started 4 together and othink it's a fine starting point
I don’t think you miss anything from playing them in any order you like really. There’s a lot of narrative there don’t get me wrong, it’s just you can kind of pick up from each game what has happened before in broad strokes, and then go back if you’re really interested. I’d say each game has enough self contained story telling that you’re going to have a good time no matter which game you start with
4 is definitely the prettiest tho, and it has a neat opening chapter with like a quick overview of the history of the gears universe, nothing comprehensive just broad strokes
Also worth remembering that the first gears especially can have quite spread out checkpoints and be very difficult with some punishing old school sections. Nothing insurmountable but just a heads up depending on your tolerance for earlier last gen games. They’re all great games tho, I even love judgement tho it seems to be the series whipping boy
Gears 1 definitely had a few areas that was like checkpoint, unskippable slow walk and talk to mask a load, open a door and then it's a potentially lethal situation. Every time you die, you have to sit through that interminable slow walk again.
The shoot the turret part of gears 4 us fucking stupid. Took at least 15 minutes and I looked up a YouTube video that didn't help, but confirmed I was doing it right.
There's FMV stuff in what feels like every room, Control is the most Remedy-ass Remedy game they've made
Doesn’t seem like there’s that much FMV stuff so far, but I just fought the first boss so maybe it picks up
Playing on a One X and it’s running pretty smoothly. I love the art direction and the setting. It’s like SCP Foundation: The Game. I actually don’t think I’ve played a Remedy game before, but this reminds me a lot of Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, which I loved.

I haven’t seen many reviews yet, though Jim Sterling was fairly positive and while I often like things he doesn’t I quite often like the things he does.

0/10 skip this part. Stupid stupid stupid
Yes. I hated that part. Having the wind changing the launch in addition to having to shoot the bomb midair was the most frustrating game moment for me in a long time.
Add in Marcus shouting 'shoot the goddamn bomb!' every 20 seconds and we about turned it off

It is tangentially Blair Witch, at best. It feels like bloober team made a game about PTSD that happened to take place in some spooky woods and went 'what license can we get for cheap?'
I thought he was taking about the part in the museum where your on a yurret, but anything you don't kill goes through the enterance and comes up behind you. That part was annoying
Anyone have one of those one month gold memberships lying around they weren't going to use? Mines about to run out and can't afford it for a couple weeks. Hopefully then I can get a couple years and convert it to ultimate.
Me and the gf are playing gears 4 and it's a game with gold game, so it goes poof when it lapses is only reason I'm asking.
I am completely on board for large, imposing celebrities in clearly-distinguishable Coalition combat armor or similar fatigues. Bring on the Rock and Idris Elba.

Is anyone having trouble with Xbox Live? I'm trying to get my games with gold, but the store pages won't load on my xbox.
Not at the moment--though I thought i was last night. I just spent the last hour realizing I'm probably not going to play Mega Man 11 again, the same way I probably won't play Sonic Mania again.
I am really, really terrible at these platformers.
Dead Cells and Enter the Gungeon both fucking own. Creature in the Well is a very welcome surprise, I didn't know it was coming out this soon and it looks sick. MGS HD Collection is super cool as I've wanted to play MGS 2 for a long time. Shadow Warrior 2 is cool if you like looter shooters. Gears 5 is Gears 5.
MGS 2&3 HD are magnificent, absolutely cracking examples of relatively early remasters, with 60fps, widescreen and lovely up-rezzing. And the controls have been tweaked slightly on the Xbox 360 (and thus One), which of course lacked pressure sensitive buttons. So control is fractionally easier. Fractionally. Like, it's harder to cut a dude's throat by accident...
2 is still insane in its way but it's amazing how prescient it was - looking back on it with 18 years of hindsight is a trip. Kojima knew.
And 3 remains not only one of my favourite games of all time, but also this is my favourite version of it.
Have to say I'm glad the main character in gears 5 is a female character. My gf is really excited for it because of that. Add in I'm a month away from having a little girl myself, and I'm all for more games doing this.

Kait Diaz looks awesome and I cant wait to play as her, continuing an ever growing lineage of female protags I (as a cisgendered male) love running, from FemShep and FemHawke to Kassandra, Evie Frye, and most recently Jesse Faden in Control.

Very, very, very Quantum Break. Considering QB is, in some respects, Remedy distilled to their most humorously esoteric, that's not surprising.
Humorously, for a game called Control, the actual controls could use a bit more work.

I guess some part where you are pinned down by a turret? I honestly don't remember this myself.
Where you launch bombs over a turret and shoot them midair
I didn't realize you were supposed to shoot it in mid air. Now I'm surprised we beat that part at all.
I only knew from Marcus yelling it over and over haha

that seems a bit more on brand for Gears.
Also curious if this has anything to do with Baustista wanting to play Marcus Fenix in the film.
