They are pretty explicitly extinct until the federation clones them from samples of the baby metroid.

And all known Metroid clones were on the BSL station, which blew up. Additionally, Samus' body no longer contains Metroid DNA after she absorbs SA-X.

(or uh I assume there were also some on the Bottle Ship but hell if I'm gonna play Other M to find out)

    how do you figure that

You use the ice beam at the end. I don't remember the exact dialogue from the end of the game but it seems to be implied Samus is back to full human at the end of Fusion.

Locking down your ability to act and slowly reducing your health is one of the more terrifying things a video game can do. Even if you know you can probably survive it, the helplessness and giving you time to really process what's happening is some goddamn psychological warfare

the horrible noises by the SCREAM when they see you and paralyze you don't help

Metroids aren't energy producing. They are energy draining.

They are useful because they are bioweapons that are incredibly hard to kill.

Yeah, the "energy production potential" line has always sounded fishy to me but it still hasn't been canonically refuted. It always sounded to me like the Federation really wanted to sic the Metroids on the Pirates and gave Samus that excuse so she wouldn't feel bad about it.

She uses the ice beam because she absorbs the SA-X who only leave her alone because there is an actual Omega Metroid right in front of them.

Yeah but the whole game up to that point makes it a big deal that Samus can't use the ice beam anymore because her Metroid DNA is weak to ice. And you just use it at the very end after absorbing SA-X. So that reads as "absorbing SA-X somehow negated all that funky DNA" to me.

I always read getting the ice beam back at the end just that the federation scientists who said "no way you'll be able to use the ice beam with all that metroid dna in you" were just wrong
also the federation was lying to you the whole game so they're not a reliable source in the first place

I mean, it's been a while but I thought it went that the SA-X had the ice beam upgrade on it, and you couldn't fight the SA-X because it was an unstoppable killing machine based off samus and was using your greatest weakness. And then the SA-X basically chooses to bond with you because it hates the fucking Omega Metroid.

And you are being told you can't use the ice beam at the beginning of the game, before the Adam AI is on your side.

Do you think Samus used to freeze herself every time she fired the ice beam before she got Metroid DNA, too

I think the suit and beam design protected her from the worst of it but the Metroid DNA would make it particularly incapacitating, not to mention how basically all the outer plating of her suit is gone so that probably includes a bunch of insulation.

If she tried to do it without the power suit on, maybe.

The suit she has in Fusion is a weird biomechanical suit that is based of the fusion of her Chozo traits and Metroid DNA. I read it as basically she has a metroid shell around her and now she can copy powers like's she gat damn Megaman.

That was the joke I was making, yeah

Samus's power suit protects her from the effects of the ice beam, just like it protects her from pretty much everything in the universe, which is why the Omega Metroid goes from doing infinity damage per hit to doing 100 damage per hit when she gets her suit back

There's nothing unambiguous in the text that even suggests Samus's DNA somehow got reverted by eating the SA-X, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. It'll either come back or it won't, but nothing we've seen so far should be taken as an absolute statement in regards to that

The Federation in Fusion explicitly do not want Samus at full power because they view her as a threat. Which, I mean, yeah. She's absolutely a threat to any big shady organization.

I find it really interesting to witness deep dives into fictions I have just a little bit of familiarity with. I haven't played a Metroid game since the original Gameboy, but that plus years of cultural osmosis make me feel like I should know all this stuff just a second after reading it.

I consider the question of Metroid extinction open still is all - if there was one lab there can be others, and Samus's post-Fusion status is a bit grey, but she wasn't baseline human to begin with (Chozo did some bio-engineering on her and gave her superhuman physique to help her survive). Not that I expect a post-Fusion game like... ever, to be honest. There's also the possibility of another stray Metroid sample or two in some Space Pirate vault somewhere or something. It's just open enough to allow them to show up in a post-fusion game, unlike the pretty explicit annihilation of the Ing and X.

All I've absorbed from having never played a Metroid game is that Samus is a female bounty hunter who killed a space pirate who was a giant brain and rescued a space blob called a metroid?

Also one of the other space pirates is a pterodactyl.

Federation Force also has the Federation acquire a Metroid egg during one of the missions and in the secret ending Sylux shows up yet again, tease that he is, and forcibly hatches the egg.
Will this tie into Metroid Prime 4? Who the hell knows. It probably(?) takes place before Metroid II, but it's yet another example of how there are always more Metroids.

Cursed sword, utterly silent, shows up freaking everywhere, never gives up the chase. He pursues. He pursues you.

Weird attack-timing, eagle-friend, only weakness is artillery.

Boo is pretty tricky, because Mario can't back up.

Anything that chased you in early 3D was horrible, because you usually couldn't see where you were going.

See while I didn't find SOMA very scary at all. I enjoyed the story, and the presentation, but SOMA rarely managed to spoop me.

I'm glad they added the option where the monsters in SOMA don't harm you, because the setting and whole thrust of the game is oppressive and existentially terrifying enough without having to worry about losing 10 minutes of playtime because you got killed.

Samus should have Metroid DNA in her for future games so when a kid who starts gaming for the first time thinks “this character is Metroid from the name” and be right

Followed by a legend of Zelda game where you play as Zelda

And a Mario game where you play as Mario

By the end of fusion you are being chased by ten SA-Xes.

    That's fucking terrifying.

The excessively trusting Young Kupi took the line about there being 10 SA-Xes pursuing you at the end of Fusion at face value and beelined for the top of the station.

It was a real seeing-the-zipper moment to realize that, nah, you can just fuck around on the station for hours and never see another SA-X until the end of the game.

Or, during any of its actual chase sequences, just time your Ice Missiles well enough that the poor thing can't move. Or trap it in a movement loop such that it always tries to shoot you in the same way and never hit you. Or set it off, run through a door, and realize that it has the object permanence of a concussed goldfish if it isn't scripted to follow you through that door.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
