Help promote my blog

So as you can probably tell by my sig, I have recently started a blog, where I collect together all the best UK video game bargains, and where possible post affiliate links so that I get commission. It started out life as a long thread in G&T, but it grew out of that into the blog.

At current levels of traffic/orders I am earning about £2 a day, but I have done very little promotion for it, mostly just word of mouth. I'm sure if I could get more people reading it, I could potentially earn allot more, potentially enough to run the blog full time.

Basically what I am looking for now is a cheap, or preferably free was of promoting it as much as possible. I've tried a few things (a digg link, and registering for the UK small business directory), but am looking for more to do. Thanks.

I'm not sure that this is the place for it(correct me if I'm wrong) but your blog looks pretty awesome and I'll tell a few buddies about it.

    Good job.

Posting on as many videogame forums as you can find with the blog in your sig is an obvious method. Just be careful not to brazenly whore all over other forums, but you know that.

The major score for Blog promoting is word of mouth. Specifically word of other blogs. So if you can get linked by other people's blogs your onto a winner.

Don't just bump it periodically obviously, that'll just get you banned. And don't put all the good deals in there either otherwise no one will have any reason to visit the blog. You need to put up one or two deals as tempters and then a Look here for more info type of thing or post deals with links that redirect through your site so you score the referrals or at least catch some ad revenue with a redirect page.

I don't know if that's a bit borderline rules-wise, but in practical terms it's no different from what you've been doing for the past few months except this way you get a few pennies for your efforts.

Also continuing to post in that thread you have in G&T is a good idea. I know you said you didn't want to do that so much anymore so you can focus on the blog, but you should consider that thread a necessary extension of your blog. Regular updates there will drive visitors to your site.

Try StumbleUpon. I find I get a lot of traffic to my websites from there.

Well, you need to download the Firefox extension. Then visit your site, and click Thumbs Up. It will open a window then and you can type it a brief review, add some tags, pick a category for it, then submit it to the database. Make sure you add some friends to increase your chances of getting your site sent around the ring. Oh, and also use the service a little for genuine reasons to boost your ratio (a sort of standing in the community meter), and that will help to give your submissions some pull in the recommendations.

So I have recently bought a bunch of games on the cheap, and am now having a competition to try and get some promotion, how does this sound for a competition premise -

    Newspost -
"I've been running this blog for a little over 2 month now, and it's been really successful, as a way of saying thank you to all the support you've given, I am having a competition, with some great prizes. See the top of the page for competition details."

At the top of the homepage -

"To enter the competition, simply email savygamer@gmail.com with your full UK address, and put the relevant code as the subject of the email.

    Prizes -
    1. Halo 3 - Legendary edition, Xbox 360 - The ultimate version of the hotly anticipated next generation sequel to one of the original Xbox's most loved series. For full details of what is included with the legendary edition check out TeamXbox. To be in with a chance of winning Halo 3 LE, put "Halo3" as the email subject.

    2. King Kong, PC - Great fps title, designed my Michael Ancel of Rayman/Beyond Good and Evil fame. Check out IGN's review here. To be in with a chance of winning King Kong, put have "Kong" as the email subject.

    3. Gunstar Future Heroes, GBA - A sequal to one of the Mega Drives most action packed scrolling shooters. Treasure push the GBA hardware further than any other game I have played, with great success. Check out IGN's review here. To be in with a chance of winning Gunstar Future Heroes, put "Gunstar" as the email subject.

    4. Act of War, PC - Really nicely executed RTS, doesn't bring much new to the table, but is very refined, and has a great story in the single player campaign. Check out Eurogamer's review here. To be in with a chance of winning Act of War, put "Act" as the email subject.

Multiple entries will be disqualified, so pick the one game you want to win, and email for that. UK entrants only. Closing Date June 30th. For a full list of terms and conditions email savygamer@gmail.com."

Anything I missed out that I should mention? or any other suggestions?

Contest looks pretty good; I'd enter, but I'm in the US.

One suggestion I'd make is that you not ask people for their address right away. Maybe just have them send the email entry form, then when the contest ends, ask just the winners for their addresses (after all, you have their email already). A lot of people are probably wary of sending their home address out unless it's for shipping or somesuch.

I thought about that. But if I do that, all I have is peoples email address and name.

Were someone to want to spam the contest with hundreds of recently registered emails addresses and fake aliases, I wouldn't know.

I was going to make a new thread about this, but I thought I could just necropost this one.

I have been pretty successful with my blog so far, but would like to take the opertunity of christmas shoppers looking for bargains to drive up traffic as much as possible. Any ideas?

Well to be honest, cheapassgamer allready has that covered, but there isn't really anything like it (that I know of) other than my blog for the UK.

Any more suggestions guys? I have submitted my site to sumbleupon and digg, and only got a very small number of hits from them.

I have written some specific articles that are vaguely related to the theme of the blog, but apart from temporary spikes in traffic they haven't really made any big differences.

I am thinking about maybe spending some money on internet advertising, but I really hate the idea of doing that, it just feels dirty, and I know that in a web 2.0 world content should be king, and I shouldn't have to promote my blog.

Part of the problem I am having increasing traffic is that it's entirely UK specific, and that it is almost entirely irrelevant to anyone outside of the UK, and most sites like Digg and Sumbleupon are worldwide, with an American skew.

Post comments in other UK gaming blogs (with your name linking back to your own blog, naturally). This helps your google ranking and increases relevant traffic to your site. Don't spam though, comment intelligently otherwise it will backfire. Once other bloggers notice you, they may even link to your blog in their own posts, especially if you result in them getting a good deal on a game or whatever.

You might also want to think about putting more information in each of your posts. At the moment posts with deals are very sparse and this means that your blogs content isn't likely to be particularly interesting for search engine spiders like google. You might want to make a little comment about the game and the deal. More relevant keywords means more interest from Google. The fact that you update so regularly should already be a big boost to your perceived relevance by Google, don't waste that by not giving it any meat to chew on whenever it sees you updating.
