I play on my TV at couch distance.

I cannot be the only one who reads “New titties unlocked” instead of “New titles unlocked” right?

I don’t think that would happen with a non-DOA game...

Nah, every time I'm reading G&T on my phone I tend to do a double take at the indie game thread.

So, I tried out the core fighters version on steam, and I have been enjoying it, but it seems like there's no way to actually upgrade to the full version of the game though, which I have to assume is an oversight, right? I would hope you aren't locked into buying the game piecemeal just because you installed the core fighters to your steam account, because that would be dumb as all hell. Is anyone else in the same boat or know what's going on with this?

Edit: apparently you have to delete the game out of your steam library in order to buy the standard version, if anyone else runs into this issue.

I am really bad at fighting games, and I went into Ranked to earn costume parts, and I met a Nyotengu player who just let me beat her up, and he rematched. After that I had the 3 most butt-clenching matches ever, and managed to get my Win-5-in-a-row trophy

Welp, just like DOA5LR, the icon for my full-priced copy DOA6 now has the ugly CORE FIGHTERS branding across it. It is a minor thing but it is annoying, and it only affects the Xbox version because I have no idea why.

In happier news, I have gone digital-only but was just about resigned to import a HK-region copy of DOAXBV3 Scarlet on (Switch) cart, because HK doesn't have an eShop yet. It turns out that you can buy it from the Japanese eShop and it will have English subtitles, unlike the previous release of DOAXBV3.

As a 48-year old with serious timing problems, I manage to complete NiCo’s command training, as it were only 74 moves, with only one with the bastard “. means a little pause” in it. So that’s another trophy gained

Although the Combo Challenges one and the tutorial one look brutal to me

I also got the Play 100 Ranked Matches trophy and I was amazed that I almost had 30 wins!
Never in my life did I think I could get so many trophies on a fighting game

I mostly did ranked to gain costume parts, so now I have my Helena-Greek-Godess outfit, my Tina-Orange-Top outfit, the Christie-red-dress one, I was lucky to unlock the one I wanted for La Mariposa as the first outfit. I still have 5 days to get all the white-wing-outfits for Nyotengu, get the Milk-T-shirt one for HonkersHonoka, the blue striped one for Kokoro, and probably a few more for the ladies (the men can go screw themselves  )

There’s no idea yet whether the costume parts boost that is currently active is going to stop after the 29th, right?

Yeah, the Core Fighters branding is annoying.

Due to difficulties setting up an ability to pay on the HK PSN store (I was going to have to get store cards from Playasia), and still being a user of physical media, I just ended up buying a disc copy of DOAX3 Fortune. Got the Chinese release which has English subtitles.

It sure is a DOAX game. It's a shame so many of the classic cast aren't in it (you are sorely missed, Tina and Christie), but Helena is still there and Momiji joined the gang, so I can deal.

Tina being dropped from the cast for X3 is WEIRD. She’s not my favorite character but I assumed she would be hugely popular in Japan.

    For reasons.

I do like her bits in the 5LR and 6 story modes, though. They’re just so removed from the Serious Ninja Drama, they make for an excellent way to lighten the mood.

Same in 3 and 4, although the story mode was obviously structured very differently then.

Yeah, the character selection for X3 is a strange one. Seems the Japanese fans love themselves some Marie Rose and Honoka, and (to put it diplomatically) they are kind of on the opposite end of the character design scale (in some/varying ways) to the likes of Tina, Christie, and Lisa, none of whom made it through the polling for the character selection. Hell, Helena only scraped through by the skin of her teeth; it's not lost on me that my two favourites from X3's roster are the two who polled lowest while still making it through, and most of my other favourites didn't make it at all. Japan loves them some kawaii, I guess.

A roster comparison note: XBV and X3 (at least, X3 Fortune/Venus) share a grand total of four characters (not counting Zack, obvs). X2 and X3 still only share five.

@baudattitude You'll have to let us know how X3 Scarlet is. Does it offer anything else besides a handful of rather, er, entertaining-sounding new characters (and the return of Leifang)?

Personally I'd have dropped Kokoro and Nyotengu for Tina and Lisa. Sorry, Christie putting up with Zack's nonsense for any length of time just seems implausible. :)

    Anyway, on the Switch version:

The obvious thing it offers is portability*, and it looks great on the built-in screen. I suspect the differences between it and the PS4 version would be more obvious in docked mode. It not only supports English but automatically detected my system language so I didn't have to fiddle through menus to get it turned on.

It keeps the DOAXBV tradition of having hair and ribbons that clip through the character models and scenery. It's particularly bad with Marie Rose since she has such long hair.

I am genuinely surprised that it supports both screenshots and video capture. I would have bet a small sum of money that those would be disabled.

Misaki is obviously new, and when I started a new vacation for the first time, I immediately got paired with her. Maybe she's the default first partner for everyone?

I think you get more money from events. I could be wrong but it seems a little more generous.

Pool hopping seems a little more forgiving when it comes to inputs. At least, I haven't lost to falling in the water yet. I've been outraced by opponents, though.

Butt battle and tug-o-war seem about the same.

I haven't actually done any volleyball yet.

The casino is same as it ever was. It autosaves a LOT to prevent save scumming, but the game has cloud save support via the online service so you might be able to game the system that way.

    * Well, yes, the Vita version of the original release version exists.

Sounds much the same as the PS4 version on nearly every level, honestly (which is no bad thing, and thankfully, it also detected the system language and defaulted to English subs). Helena and Momiji, both having very long hair, also suffer noticeably from the hair clipping; but at this point it just might not be DOA without it

    Cheers for the write-up! :+1:

    Also, thread title updated

You're trying to get to the ideal "we spend no money, customers spend infinite money" stage. I think with the gacha mobile version, they're basically there.

I don't understand why you'd leave any of the DOA ladies out of a DOAX game, but I'm not really the market, so I guess there are reasons?

I think everyone assumed that they would be sold as individual and outrageously-priced DLC. This has thus far failed to happen.

As shoe points out, they have their PC gacha game that is probably making them scads of money, but I don’t know much about that particular iteration of the franchise. For buying Scarlet, I got an email from Nintendo with a code that I could use in Venus Vacation for a swimsuit, but that’s not temptation enough to figure out how to install it.

  • Options
    JazzJazz Registered User regular
Yeah, I took one look at what appears to be involved in installing Venus Vacation and nope'd.

I wonder if there's actually a gameplay balance thing involved in only having 9 characters (8 in XBV1). Given how much of the game revolves around building and maintaining friendships (and as much as the game obfuscates the mechanics of exactly how that works, but I guess that's to avoid having blatant meters to fill or something), maybe having 15 characters or even more might unbalance it somehow. (So the expanded roster in Scarlet may have required some under-the-hood tweaking to keep the game working right, maybe.)

Just a thought, I've not put any time into figuring out exactly how that might be the case.

I just know that since the roster of ladies expanded a lot between X2 and X3, and the dev wanting to keep it to 9 characters (for the original release), they had this poll in Japan and they are basically honoring the result. Or so goes the official reasoning (which I do believe). Which is why almost all of the extra characters in Scarlet are new (all but Leifang) and the rest of the ones who didn't get through the poll are staying on the bench.

And since the all-new characters are unlikely (I assume) to make it over to DOA6, and NiCO is so far nowhere near a DOAX game, I wonder if the two series are going to diverge even further in due course.

I put way too much thought into this

I read somewhere that you can get the Pictorial Paradise trophy in Fortune quickly by using the VR function.
But of course you need to buy a VR DLC on the Japanese PSN store, and I played the Japanese disc on my standard European account. And I’m in no mood to grind from owner level 43 to 50...

Is there any sort of feature grid that compares the new Switch version to the PS4 version? I'm thinking of importing one, looks like I can get both versions for roughly $90-100, but I want to make the best choice for which game is most complete / has best mechanics, and so forth.

I hope that they did something about DAO quest correctly attributing costume parts if you earn more than the costume. Because getting 400 parts and it is used for a 100 part costume which results in 300 parts lost is annoying, especially since it works in Online mode correctly.

And I finally got my 50 ranked wins and costume 15 for Nyotengu

I can answer my ow question: I just logged on after the patch, and received 39 sets of costume parts (probably the overflows of DOA Quest) resulting in 20 costume unlocks

EDIT: They fixed it now that the quest you complete earns parts for the character used in the quest.
And my Helena had all costume parts already so when I cleared one of her quests, parts went to Mila.

Phase 4 is now available to purchase (at least on Xbox, I assume Steam & PS4 as well but I haven't looked) to fill up your character roster. However, the deluxe edition's other extras (the costumes) still aren't, so I'm going to hold off and see if the DE upgrade ever goes on sale on its own.

My Helena has her classic catsuit back so that's awesome. Unfortunately the cuffs are clipping into each other and her chest in her home screen pose, but it's a small price to pay...

I played the shit out of DOA 4 in college with my housemates, so I picked up core fighters for a bit of a nostalgia trip. I'd seen the full game on sale for $120 AUD and put it in the "maybe eventually" category, but then core fighters came out and you can't beat "free" as a price point. Plus Kasumi was always tied with Bayman for my favorite character anyway, so she was a logical "main". Did the training and some arcade for practice and then took myself online expecting myself to be thrashed by a bunch of 14 year-olds with more free time and better twitch reflexes (I'm 33, which according to gamer lore is well past the age where your reflexes go to shit) and I just sort of... didn't. I don't want to say I'm good at this game, I've certainly had plenty of thrashings online, but I'm definitely not completely awful! I made it to D rank with Kasumi without too much effort and decided that I'd logged enough hours to justify purchasing Bayman... and almost immediately neural pathways that hadn't fired in over 15 years sprang to life. Let it be known that Bayman is still my Bae. He originally became my favorite partly because of how goddamn frustrating it is to play against someone who can play him well, and on those long sleepless nights of Xbox in college so long ago the rage of my housemates would sustain me.

Other characters: "I am going to punch you"

Bayman: "No. I break your arm."

OC: "Okay, I'm going to kick you instead."

B: "No. I break your leg."

OC: "Alright, well how about this move that can't be blocked! Hah!"

B: "I roll out of way, trip you, and break your arm again."

OC: "Hah! Fuck you! I've managed to knock you down anyway!"

B: "Okay. You got too close though, now I trip you and break your arm again."

    OC: "I hate you."

B: "Also I have three part throw which take off a third of your health and nobody know how to counter."

I took the time to make sure I could still pull off that three-part throw, and finally pulled it off in an online match today. I am the dayglo orange harbinger of your doom. Face me if you dare, but know that your limbs are forefeit.

    Is good, comrade!

There are definitely certain characters I'm struggling with more than others, and I'm wondering how much of that is to do with the characters themselves and how much is to do with my choice of character. For example, Ayanes kick my arse, every time. She's just too damn fast for Bayman to be able to do anything, which is also a problem with Kasumi except that I know her moveset well enough that I can reliably counter-hold her. The other PITA character of today's session was Nyotengu, I kept getting matched with the same guy and only managed to win twice out of our six or so matches. She has a lot of moves which are either unblockable, or I simply don't know how to block them yet, and my most effective strategy for dealing with her so far has been to stay close and don't give her enough breathing room to get a runup or cast her tornado thingamajig. I have a replay saved of one of the matches I did win where I basically managed to keep her pinned in a corner and methodically broke all of her limbs. After getting beat so many times by that guy I enjoy watching that particular replay more than is probably healthy.

Bought the DOA X3 Scarlet version for Switch. Import obviously. Played it just a bit last night. Didn't have enough time to dive into it a whole lot. I think I got to day 4, but I'm already thinking of starting over.

I only skim this thread since it is mostly about DOA the fighting game, and not so much about DOA the Volleyball Simulation game. And I somehow missed the posts on this very page (until later) that mentioned notable character omissions like Tina and Christie and Lisa. So I was shocked when none of those characters were there. I was then hopeful that maybe they were hidden behind some sort of unlock mechanic, but I guess that isn't the case either.

Yeah, unfortunately they aren't there and it seems pretty clear they aren't joining. It's a shame, because in most other ways I think DOAX3 is a bit of a return to form after the problems of X2.

DOA volleyball games are definitely a welcome topic of discussion in this thread, though - there's at least a few of us playing them!

Hopefully at least a couple of your favourite characters made the cut.

Not exactly in-depth, but it's meant to be relaxing and chilled rather than challenging. You play your character, the AI plays your partner - but you can use the right stick to override the partner movement. Jumps are done automatically and you only have two buttons. Each opponent character also has their own difficulty level (not always equal in the team). So it's not deep at all, but it's fun enough if you consider it as the main mini-game in a vacation sim.

Sadly it's not had multiplayer since the first one, either. (Edit: unless X2 had online multi, I forget now. XBV had local co-op multi but not versus, if memory serves.)

So I have yet to figure this out. What is the difference between Scarlet and the original flavor version that came out earlier for the Vita and PS4? I played the Vita off and on for a while and sucked at the pool hopping event, and could hardly beat any team higher difficulty than Medium or whatever it is past Easy.

I dunno. X2 had jet ski races. As far as I can tell, X3 does not. So I dunno about it being a return to form. Unless you're talking about the actual volleyball, I guess.

After having sunk maybe 3-4 hours into it last night, it feels like they're really banking a lot on the player being big into taking pictures of the girls and the whole photography mode thing. They have obviously invested a lot of resources into that (game resources, i.e. development time, UI, itemization, artwork, and so forth). But for me, I'm actually interested in the mini-games and actual gameplay, and the game feels kinda lacking in that department.

I'm not like, upset or anything. I just wish there was a bit more substance. It seems like much of the development time was invested into the lechery engine. Which I guess I should have assumed would be the case.
