Is this were us old farts reminisce about our early days on the internetz? We spelled it with a "z" back then, as was the style at the time.

I think my first memory of actually using the internet for something (as opposed to just dicking around in chat rooms) was looking up a recipe.
My grandfather who was living with us at the time told us about a horrifying dish from his childhood that he couldn't stand called schnitz and knepp, some kind of ham/apple dumpling thing. It doesn't sound too terrible, but to hear him recount it, it was a trial to eat and recurring nightmare for him well beyond the time when anyone around him know what the hell a schnitz was. Probably not high on the list of things I'd go out of my way for, but not something I'd like go out of my way to avoid either.
Naturally, I went to the basement, logged into AOL and 15 minutes later had the recipe printed out and in hand. Being a jackass of a kid, I asked him if that was it.
I don't think I've seen a person actually, literally, recoil or shudder in response to anything before or since. But he managed both.

It was in either middle or high school when I took a web design class. We were learning how to create a webpage on angelfire or geocities using Microsoft FrontPage. The teacher was very adamant in saying you must know how FrontPage works it's going be the future.

I was having a talk with some friends the other day, I'm 33 later this year, one is 29 and the third is just 25. We were talking about our favorite memes and the yougest had never heard of: Magical Trevor, Bubb Rubb, The Leprechaun Tree, Badger Badger, the 29 year old said he remembered the Tree thing from middle school and then the yougest remembered part of it from a techno remix with the slap chop commercial.

    I felt so...so old.

I am the same age as you and the only one of those things I remember is badger badger.

    Mushroom mushroom.

Snaaake snaaaaak oh no it's a snaaake.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

When I was teaching kids I was once asked what life was like before youtube. This was then followed by them trying to guess my age. The consensus was 49.

I haven't really stopped staring into space since.

What, like Weebl-stuff? Didn't know that became much of a meme.
People talking about things from this century making them feel old is weird. It's been barely a decade since those videos.

I remember when chat rooms weren’t on all the time. Specifically, Nintendo.com ran one, but only for like 2 hours, 2 days a week.

God. I do. And I can safely say that all of my pre-college internet history was exploded away. And for that I am very thankful.

For a while, kind of simple browser-games were a bit of popular. Like a puzzle-thing with pushing rocks around without blocking the exit or getting the little astronaut crushed. And something to collect for points. Diamonds?

I still remember when neighbours (the closest a kilometre away) showed off their new DOS-operated computers when people stopped by. One of them had a game with two robots standing on rooftops and shooting at eachother? I didn't understand the mechanics.
Didn't understand the Microsoft?-thing with big ants chasing you around on a tile-grid, either.

I remember being fucking pumped when my parents bought a computer by accident, I think, that was good enough to play half life 1 on, like 1999, maybe?

And I found a mod, The Opera, that never rally had a full release, on planet half-life and it was a mess, so I joined their forum to get helping running it

And somewhere around 2000, Gabe and Tycho started working on their John Woo satire comic, Over Easy, and I ended up here and was too terrified to post for almost two years

Remember when regular PCs came with giant stacks of games?

The first PC my family had came with like 20 games, including MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries.

I remember when i was in year 7 and i was playing ultima online with my friend who lived a street away

his internet got cut out while we were walking to Britain, just as we were being attacked by some gargoyles

he ran to my house in tears so he could log in and try to save his character from dying. It didn't work, he died and lost his gear
