Single security camera - no Wi-Fi?

AridholAridhol Daddliest CatchRegistered User regular
I am looking for a wired (Ethernet) enabled single security camera without WiFi or at least one that wifi can be disabled on.

We've tried 3 cameras (cheap ones) for my dad's garage and every single one you can't turn off the WiFi and it interferes with the garage door signal.

Any recommendations or experiences with something like this would be greatly appreciated.

Is something with locally stored memory an option?
Alternatively, could you build a Faraday cage for one of the WiFi cameras to cut down on interference?

I tried tin foil haha didn't cut. It down enough.
He wants to view it on his phone from the home and other places so local store doesn't fit the need :/

This might be what you are looking for. Ethernet no WiFi.

    I think that's perfect!
Poe cameras, damn I should have thought of that.

    Thanks!

How cheap; cheap enough to break? You could open the housing and see if there's an antenna you can disable more... directly.

A quick goggle suggests you need more than tin foil for that to actually work.

But, if you can't find a non-wifi camera, might it be more practicable to shield the Garage door receiver from the cameras? If it only needs to receive from a specific vector, and if the cameras aren't in it, maybe you can just rig something to it instead?

(I only suggest it because it is clearly the more fun [for me, the one not doing it] solution.)

You know, before spending cash on it I'm going to take it apart and see if I can perform some "special maintenance".
It's one of those mass manufactured no-name cams labeled "Amorvue" and there is like zero documentation & support.
I did try ripping the antenna's off before I tried the tin foil :)

Watched a few teardowns on electronics-nerd-tube; seems like you could get lucky and the wifi will be it's own board that you can disconnect, or unlucky and it will have an all-in-one cpu.

I'll cross my fingers for the former being the preferred option of cheap IP cameras!

    So, bad news good news.

Bad news is for some reason there is still interference.

Good news, the wifi chip I ripped off didn't kill the camera

    Bizzare and disappointing!

Could it be EMI of some kind, then? Unless there's some sort of secondary chip in the SOC that maybe gets enabled when it doesn't see the wifi daughterboard?

I was going to recommend a Wyze cam, but without it explicitly saying so, I'm pretty sure they're wifi based.

This may be going too deep, but can you approach this from the other direction and get a new receiver for the garage door opener?

I brought this up to him first because there are some awesome openers these days, even app controlled and stuff but he's being stubborn and won't entertain it.

I will keep playing with the board and see if maybe I can find another source or if it's possible to wrap it somehow cheaply.

    Appreciate the suggestions :)
