    Ogre Pro-tip:
Let the big asshole out of his cage.

    Run away.

Come back after he forgets about you (the life meter will go away from the HUD) and do a stealth deathblow.

Use fire to scare him and waste his ass.

Only needing to get one deathblow makes a lot of these guys way easier.

I stepped away from Lady Butterfly for a bit, got my first prayer bead and a third Gourd, then went back to her.

I got her so fucking close to a deathblow that I could taste it, but the old Dark Souls "got greedy" habit kicked in.

oh hey it's mammon machine, neat. Haven't read anything from them in a while. I remember their take on gta5 lining up pretty much 1:1 with my experience.

Anyway, Sekiro. Hrm how do I ask this without spoiling anything. There's a little poster near an abyss, that says "don't go here if you value your life because reasons"
    Regarding that path
I leapt to the first tree and couldn't see or lock on to any further grapple point, couldn't jump up that rock spire and...actually couldn't reach the point where I came from. Now I don't want spoilers, all I need to know is: should I be able to continue down that path or do I need an item/upgrad/story event?

Get a stealth deathblow to start the fight. Then you only need one pip!

I was going to finish DS:R first, but nope, too hype. I was late to the party on all the other games, so the urge to finally play one at release was too strong. Can’t wait to explore this thing.

    Wow, Ok.
Yep. That was 100% the Lady Butterfly fight. Took 5 tries, whereabouts.

I had way more trouble on the miniboss preceding her.

I left Lady Butterfly for a while. When I first got to her, I couldn't even make it to stage two of the fight. I went out, explored more, gradually got used to things.

Came back to her just now, and got her in one go.

Aside from the Ashina Gate boss(es), there's very little bottlenecking in this joint. So many nooks and crannies to explore and practice and find treasures in.

Just got my fourth prayer necklace. Feels good.

Yeah I know of at least like half a dozen minor bosses I could go fight right now for prayer beads

Some of them are real fuckers though

  • LockedOnTargetLockedOnTarget Registered User regular
20 tries later and this stupid fight is done. Not because I got better at it, but because I was lucky enough to not have the AI spam unfair tracking grabs over and over again.

I am forcing myself at this point because I know that if I give up that’s eighty bucks in the trash that I really could have used for other things.

I was not expecting the execution barrier to be this much. I don’t know what I expected anymore.

I don't understand the point of the Vault Over skill. When someone's posture is broken you can vault over them and then do a backstab on them, but what benefit is there to doing that instead of just doing a deathblow?

    Hidden Walls
you trigger hidden walls by wall hugging against them. Look for spots that look like they could be a secret door, like where there's a vertical banner roughly person sized. For example, you can find one in the building just before the Madame Butterfly fight

Sekiro is an incredibly intensive twitch reaction game.

If you can like, play street fighter on a KBAM then go for it. Otherwise I strongly suggest a controller.

I've been playing KBAM and I find it quite good compared to Souls on KBAM, though I also have a Nostromo with a thumb d-pad for quick item and tool swapping and my mouse has extra buttons which I mapped to tool use and the grappling hook.

Mileage may vary, but I've not had a problem yet.

Beat it! Loved it, had a lot of fun exploring the areas. Final boss was very hard, but probably had the most fun that encounter.

I think them adding more narrative was a good thing, but other than that the world was very From Softy. Some areas just seem to be From trademarks and I wish they woulda tried something different in those spots. I think playing a lot of Nioh made the magic of the Japanese historical setting less compelling too.

Going to start another playthrough soon, still had a few things I wanted to explore that I forgot about.

Got past the first boss on NG+. There's a (new?) modifier you can turn on that I'm working through now.

I really want to see videos 2-3 months from now where people just style on fights with all the crazy moves you can do. When you can chain some stuff and wall jump off this, counter that, dodge here, use an attachment here, and make it all come together you feel like a super ninja.

So I decide to go lookin' for this feather dodge thing and find enough online to point me in the right direction but no further.
WHAM purple guy lands on me like a ton a' bricks. I come back. We throw down and he stomps me.

I come back. Five times and on time 4 I'm like "maybe I should try lady butterfly again" but I give it another 2 and just go toe to toe with this fucker and he kills me and he's still at 40% vitality but his poise is ready to snap so I rez and hold square and bam go right into the killing blow.

I claim my prize, do not look back at my defeated foe, and gaze out across the burning hillside, swelling with pride.

It’s really interesting seeing players react to this as being way harder than a Souls game, because I put about the same amount of time into them that I have with this so far, yet found Dark Souls and Bloodborne to be complete brick walls in terms of difficulty.

This game is freaking hard as hell, but I actually feel like I’m constantly making progress in some way, which keeps me engaged and enjoying it despite my frustration.

Would I be right in assuming that not having the ingrained experience with SoulsBorne games is actually something of a boon?

I’d be interested in going back and trying other From games after I finish this, to see how my approach and attitude has changed.

    I wouldn't say it's a boon. It's not a detriment either.

Like, if you try to play this exactly like another souls game it's going to be harder, I guess. But I am not sure why someone would do that as it's pretty clearly going for a different thing.

This game feels hard in the way that like say, Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta can feel hard, at least for me.

Dark Souls is just hard in a different way. It's a bit apples or oranges.

I'm on the side of people who hate how much harder this game is.

At least in Dark Souls, it took me until S&O to really hit a brick wall of difficulty. In Sekiro, it's, like, the third miniboss?
Specifically, the Ogre that does the bullshit grab attacks

I'm glad my friend got this for PC. I turned on cheats and didn't look back, cuz there are some genuinely cool moments in the game and some neat story that I would have hated to have missed just because From Software absolutely refuses to make games I can reasonably play.

EDIT: Sekiro feels like From Soft decided to make character-action game that only has the highest difficulty option enabled.
