I made the mistake for a while of not realizing the Miriki Counter (or however you spell it), was the dash button and not the guard button. It really confused me.

Also, I cannot do combat arts and it makes me sad. I had to rebind all my controls so I could actually play this game and not let my muscle memory from more recent games like DMC5 screw me over, but hitting guard and melee at this point is basically impossible :(. I wish I could rebind that combo.

    Combo

The Flame Vent is great when you can get it to connect and have oil as well. The trade off is that the Firecrackers are so much easier to use and have a huge range when upgraded, but don't do damage.

I did fire, poison and used the fire-crackers on Genichiro. . .nothing was as effective as just deflect and spamming circle when a perilous attack popped up; which I mean I guess is the point of the game but still feels needlessly unsatisfying to have a bunch of tools that are largely ineffective.

Like why can't I know him out of the sky with my shurikens? (I'm assuming you can't because I'm busy deflecting them).

. . .the only reason that fight didn't leave a complete stain on my game is the reward you get has made enemy encounters much more fun and Batman-like.

the ones from the illusions should be just blocked by a pillar. The ones she adds to her attacks just have to be blocked. If your poise isn't low, you should be able to just eat a whole combo from her, but it does suck if they come out at a bad time.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I had to use pretty much every tool in my arsenal plus a fair amount of oh shit praying to beat him on my 4th or 5th attempt. If you are really struggling I highly recommend you check out the fextralife Sekiro game progression guide. It will tell you where the tools are and the easy to get beads.

Also I want to second what someone said earlier, if you hit a roadblock go explore and try to find a new area. New areas have new mini bosses which are tough but much more manageable and they give you beads.

So how did everyone else beat the samurai right before Genichiro? I literally ran circles around him and clobbered him with the axe until he died. I could not get a read on how to block or deflect that stupid double slice. It was a painfully cheesy way to do it but it worked in the end.

I ran into him with the Sabemaru because it poisons him and that poison will drain half of his health bar which makes it super easy to posture break him by parrying or blocking his Ashina Cross attack. Then right after the first Deathblow I Sabemaru'd him again for more poison.

The attempt where I got her (after a whole lot of tries) I started an attack string on her the instant she landed and never let up. I think she summons the illusions at a set vitality percentage if she gets a chance to stand still for a second, and if you keep hitting her she won’t get that chance. Her deflection pattern was really straightforward. She always deflects on your second or third swing, after which she either attacks, sweeps, or does a jump kick. You can deflect the basic attack and start swinging again. You can double jump the sweep for a whole lot of posture damage to her. And for the jump kick with some practice you can avoid it with a dodge or jump and be standing right next to where she lands to keep up the attack.

I’m sure there was a whole lot of luck involved as well but I found that in general with her attacking relentlessly was the best bet.

It's blocked with a black line after you first revive, that goes away when you get a Deathblow. It also needs to recharge by killing or getting Deathblows on enemies - this is persistent across deaths.

This was the shinobi Hunter, forget his name. He just has multiple enemies in the room with him you need to clear out via stealth before stealth attack him from some bushes. It isn’t hard to clear it just takes time.

It took me way too long to learn the value of just mashing on fools until they deflect and memorizing their deflect follow-ups. So much easier to react when you're proactive and forcing a response out of them.

Also learning the spots in their patterns when you can reliably dodge and counter-attack, it's so good for damage and keeping on pressure, totally worth experimenting to find.

Can the lock on break if an enemy moves around a lot? There have been times where I'm surprised to no longer be locked on.

It took me a while to properly understand deflecting. It's not extremely obvious that you've done it like Dark Souls parrying, but it's also a lot easier to do.
