So I think I’m solidly in the mid-to-endgame?

Ashina Castle after Ape and Monk
I can kill them legitimately, but kiting red hat dudes into the Chained Ogre room is a hilarious way to get some quick XP.

    beat big boy optional boss

ended up clearing his entire last health bar with no gourd left

he's honestly a pretty good boss

still haven't figured out how to reliably avoid the big jump attack

Some people have complained about the Corrupted Monk.

I have an easy strategy you can use to beat him. Just copy this. All you need is 3 snap seeds and 6 ash. It's that easy!

I got 100% the other night, and I am hard-pressed to think of an encounter I didn't eventually come to like.
The Kuro's Charm challenge might be okay on NG or NG+, but on NG+4 it felt too punitive. I had to give up on it at Corrupted Monk 2, as a single mistake meant I got one-shot.

Great Shinobi is probably the best high-stress, white-knuckle fight for me, and Sword Saint is a validation/celebration of everything you've learned.

After three fights x 5 playthroughs, Genichiro is lucky if he gets a gourd swig out of me.

To my everlasting shame, I fought that damned ape ten times and never once used the spear trick despite knowing about it. Which either reflects poorly on my attention span, or speaks well of how engrossing these fights are.
    What a fucking game, everyone.

Finally beat Sword Saint and I don't know which is worse: that it took me so long to do it, or that I felt like it wasn't that hard when I did do it.

Don't get me wrong, he kicked my ass many, many times. But by the time I beat him, I could zip through the first two parts of the fight in no time at all with damage and get to the final part of the fight with something like 7-8 gourd swigs ready.

I think the biggest barrier for me was getting flustered by the added attacks in the final stage. Phase three and phase four are the same fight except for those 2-3 additional attacks, and I kept zeroing in on countering those instead of keeping up with fighting him as normal. Then I'd get crushed by his normal attacks, start switching focus, then get surprised and killed by his new attacks. When I finally just kept fighting him as normal and only tried to counter his new attacks when I had a big, easy opening, I knocked it out of the park.

Major kudos to Fromsoft for finally making a game where almost all the enemies were challenging but were also almost all, even the bosses, playing the same game as me instead of just getting to break a million game rules. That final fight kicked my ass so hard, yet I liked it so much. And almost all the boss fights are that way! About the only two that I would really pull from the game are the summoner dude and the headless; their designs are just lazy and annoying compared to virtually everything else, and I'd honestly rather just finding a chest with their rewards than mucking around with them multiple times.

Decimated Seven Spears Mk. 2, bit of a hint if you want:
Lure them out, then swing off until they leave. Then go back, shank his partner, and puppet him. He will DECIMATE Seven Spears' posture.

I think I am done with the game. I'm at the second rooftop instance fight...... BIG SPOILER AHEAD
So I opted to follow Owl and had to fight Emma. I just barely got through it after like 10 attempts, her timings just throw me off for some reason. Then I find I gotta fight Isshin who has 3 phases right after!? FUCK. THAT.

I think I've hit my limit. It's been a fun ride and definitely the most enjoyable FROM game I've ever played.

The final boss wouldn't be as frustrating if
you didn't have to fight Genichiro first. From didn't make you fight the boss before the true big bad in Bloodborne again after you beat him.

Haven’t played in several days and started Owl (Father) back up:
I have phase one locked down now, or as locked down as I think is possible. I’ve gotten through it.

The problem is I’ll sit on my nine gourds and full hp and then fuck up one attack string and lose my rez. Like now I got him down to 1/4th and didn’t take a hit then I fucked up the fireworks&thrust and lost the rez and it was over pretty soon after that. I really think they should have made you afford more mistakes. I am as good as I will be, I will fuck up once or twice over several minutes. I mean I will hit what, 50, 100 deflections in this phase alone? I will fuck up the 101st in a bad timed string and lose everything. It’s hard to feel like a badass ninja.

The hardest part is the dodge in the fireworks finisher. It’s very peculiar, it needs to be diagonal up but sometimes it becomes just up for no apparent reason.

It’s so disheartening I just lose my whole game when it happens. Just now took exactly no hits from him for two minutes straight, then suddenly the overhand got perfect tracking which I’ve noticed seems to happen if you are too close to him. Then I tilt and die pretty much immediately.

you can dodge backwards out of the fireworks and then back in to get a hit (unless your back is to a wall/pillar, but you want to avoid that anyway because lol camera issues)

For me those fights where quite a bit harder than the true final boss fight but they can be made manageable by picking the correct combat art. By picking the option that you did you ended up with the shortest ending path which doesn't include a large chunk of late game stuff and quite a bit of stuff for upgrades.

Fight info for that ending including semi-cheesy move.
Emma is a pure posture fight and if you don't keep the pressure up the fight will drag on forever which was what doomed my earlier attempts. Her long combo has a final slightly delayed hit and if you deflect that you will throw her and you get a nice free hit in, otherwise she throws you and you lose lock. When she does the ashina cross you can move back and to her side and then in for some free damage. If you don't feel like trying to tangle with her perilous attacks you can usually just back off and then go back for a free hit on the grab but that one does have weird tracking so don't go in too soon.

Isshin is all about either waiting and reacting to what he is doing and then countering or forcing the issue by using a single r1, no follow up attack, on him when he is his neutral stance and then reacting to what he does after he avoids the slash. A lot of the time you can simple move behind him after things like his ichimonji or ashina cross and get a nice solid hit in and then you are back to starting at each other until the next clash. One thing about phase 2 is his one mind combat art, which can be interrupted with a firecracker but if you can't get to him when he stands still and does this grunting yell you need to move away from him and stand in a spot that isn't burning because the place will catch on fire and he will come streaking at you like a cruise missile. If you are running around you will almost certainly be hit by the fire and then Isshin will most of the time simply kill you dead. But if you are standing in place you can deflect his initial big hit and then spam the block button to deflect all the hits in the combat art and then the big hit at the end.

The big trick move you can pull off against Isshin is to use the shadowrush combat art since he can't block it and it does a crapton of damage to his vitality. It can be used to crush his phase 1 to get a feel for his second phase but when going for the kill it felt best to go easy on them in p1 and only do some initially to drop his vitality a little and save the rest for p2. You can even use it after you run out of emblems but then you only get the rush and not the flip so it doesn't do as much damage and you need to be quicker to deflect or get out of range since he isn't as staggered by that.
Pretty good video for the shadowrush usage
