I have been playing A Link to the Past since the day it was released and only just now figured out I could get the hammer, nope the fuck out of the dungeon, and head straight for the Titan's mitt. Don't know why, but I always thought I had to beat the first dark world dungeon, and get an item from another.
Man, it's been so long since I played LttP, I totally forgot there was a dark world.
I clearly need to replay that...and now that Switch has it available for free, there's no better time!

The former. I just have it paid for the year so I'm thinking of it as actually free, but it's not.
But they released a large number of SNES games that could be played if you have a Nintendo Online sub, LttP being one of them.

Also, if Nintendo Online only grated the ability to play online multiplayer and nothing else, they would probably have a fraction of the subscriptions they do now.
Mario Maker 2 is the most obvious thing that would be keeping people/getting people subscribed. There isn't too much else that is actually worth it and works well.

No, I'm paying for online access for Monster Hunter, Smash, and whatever else requires it. I would do so even without the extras -- and did, as none of these things existed this time last year IIRC.
To be honest, I love this game- I love its look, I love the fact there's more to find, but at the same time, for anyone who asks? If you're any good at Zelda games, it's rather on the easy side- mostly because of a few things: the fact that you can carry a few faeries with you, AND have an application of Crazy Tracy's medicine (a one-time full recovery when you lose all your hearts, I don't know if faeries trigger on running out of hearts or what)... it makes it too easy to just truck on through.
The major part that makes this easier is the much-better dungeon map- that you can actually see the room contents on.
Having the Power Bracelet, Pegasus Shoes, Sword and Shield on their own buttons is a huge help, as well, and it saves four slots of inventory space.
The Evil Eagle- the boss of the Eagle's Tower- is a hell of a lot easier now that the fight with him now doesn't reset if you happen to fall off the top of the tower to the lower level.
The final battle, against the Nightmare, has a good bit more bite than the original. The fights are mostly the same- except the Ganon phase of the fight has been changed now so you can't just go and truck him with the boots and sword until the next phase. It's only vulnerable at certain points- after the trident is tossed, and right before more flaming bats are summoned.
Despite what IGN says, the boomerang against the final boss is NOT a one-hit kill, but it's more of an infinite-ammo weapon to use instead of just hoping you kill it before you run out of arrows. It still takes sixteen shots to do it.
There are three spots in the world where you can upgrade your three consumables- bombs, magic powder, and arrows. One is under a rock in the Mysterious Woods, another is up in the mountains near Turtle Rock, and I want to say the last one is down near Martha's Bay? But I'm not sure where exactly.
Is there any point to finding all the figurines? I've dug plenty out of the Trendy game, but no luck with the others- are they in the Dungeon Maker?
I understand that Nintendo couldn't market it as-such at the beginning of the service because the NES + SNES + Tetris were not there, but marketing NSO as "old school Nintendo Netflix!" is such a better hook than "you used to be able to play these games online for free but now you can't".
For what its worth I would happily pay double the going rate if it meant Nintendo got proper servers for stuff like Splatoon instead of relying on p2p connections but alas. I do love NSO still.
Beat it and now I want to start a new save file right away to get the perfect ending, and because I forgot to do hijinks with Marin when she was in my party. Adding a warp to Animal Village makes the trek with Marin trivial.
Yeah it's short but I like it that way. A nice bite-sized Zelda experience to knockout on a weekend or a trip.

I usually just complete each level once I start it, but I think there are a couple places where you can go to one level or the other- the most obvious of these, is surprisingly, right after you finish Lv. 4, Thieves' Town. You have a choice of going to either Lv. 5 (Ice Island) or Lv. 6 (Misery Mire), because the treasure in Lv. 5 is just an armor upgrade.
I always finish Misery Mire before Ice Island, mostly because the treasure from there (the block-making Cane of Somaria) completely negates the biggest multi-floor pain in the ass block pushing puzzle in Ice Island.
As far as other sequence breaking... yeah, once you get the dungeon's treasure, you can come and go as you please, and go wander around the Dark World.
Link Gets Woke is very good. I appreciate that a lot of the dungeon puzzles and little challenges require you to think a little bit more than most of the other 2D Zeldas.

It's like a nickel a day per year if you want to think in those terms.
Not really. A subscription is a subscription, and it's not really a service I require, even. I have all the NES/SNES games I want to play in multiple formats/places, and I don't actually play online games (even games like Dark Souls I intentionally turn off the internet connections of). It was more a question of it it was really free, or if it was "free with purchase" (which isn't really free).

It’s good, but the source material is good. I am still not convinced its that much better than the gameboy.
I mean I love the new graphics. I’m just a bit put off by the questionable fit and finish on a first party Nintendo game.

I mean, the quality of life updates alone are worth it. Two item buttons means a whole lot.
I'm still reeling a bit from the price point, though. That was a lot to pay for a remake of a gameboy game, even if it was one of the best gameboy games.

Alright folks, here's the fun shit. First, complete the Eastern Palace as normal and go to the Desert Palace. Grab the Power Gloves and leave. Then go to the Tower of Hera and get the Moon Pearl, and bail. Then do this: https://youtu.be/uwevc-hWagg
Dip into the Palace of Darkness for the Hammer, and very carefully make your way to Thieves' Town for the Mitts. With that you can rescue the blacksmith and now you've got four hearts and a level 3 sword. From this point you can do a lot of weird shit. Wanna kill the Moldorm with the Tempered Sword? Go for it you funky little elf man. You can grab the pendants and the go back for the Master Sword but I don't know if it can be tempered a second time. I'm not sure how all the event flags map so I can't recall if Agahnim just vanished once you've finished a crystal dungeon. I highly recommend this path if you've beaten the vanilla game enough to forget how all this shit works.
After completing Dungeon Arranging 101, Placing the Basics, A Passage Across, and Fill Up Your Hearts in the Arrange Dungeon mode you do get rewarded with a Free mode where you can make dungeons however you see fit and a number of empty save slots.
Completing Fill Up Your Hearts also gave me a Secret Sea Shell and A Piece of Heart. Not sure what completing anything in the next set of challenges (Key Hunter, Bomb's Away, etc) gets you yet though as I haven't tried out any of them yet.

I've never done this before. Working out how to reach everywhere and survive was a lot of fun! Now I have an enjoyable new way to play this.
If you go for that, remember that I think the Skull Woods dungeon boss is bugged so if your sword is too good it actually can't damage it.
Other things can, but you may need a green potion for the fire rod or something.

Regular slashes with the tempered sword are good, tempered sword spin/dash attacks and anything with the golden sword are a no-go. This is apparently for complicated programming reasons that boil down to not letting Mothula get shredded by her own spike traps.
I've yet to crack into the Link's Awakening remake yet, but seeing conversation about the Crane Game previously, I feel this clip has to resonate with some people:

There's a total of, if I'm recalling right, two shells, two heart pieces, and finishing all 12 main challenges (requires all dungeons done) gives a full heart. All the challenges after that (gold shovel) are rupee reward only.

My wife grabbed me the BotW DLC, which has reinvigorated me after the bit of a defeating feeling of finding out most to all of the Lynels are now white-maned (and thus harder). At least I can take plenty of the advice here to heart and go try and take them on with a bit more of a tactical approach in mind.

One of my favorite Breath of the Wild moments came from Master Mode (and from just the starting Plateau no less).
But, you defintely have to be willing to bang your head against the difficulty wall a bit at the beginning. Eventually conquering that mode is really fun though and some of the remixed aspects are great.
I hit a point in LA where I only figured out what to do next because I remembered it from my childhood but uh, getting the bird key is a little obtuse.
Also I went through the color dungeon and it was way less of a thing than I remembered. I guess it was mostly showing off that the system could do color back then but the puzzles were simple but overall nice. The tunics are kind of Overkill for how hard this game is normally.
Next up is eagle tower and vague memories of hating it
There's no shame in breaking out a walkthrough for the Eagle's Tower, or Turtle Rock. There's a couple of hidden doors in Turtle Rock you practically need a guide to find to progress, and Eagle's Tower is Eagle's Tower...

I can understand the interest in a mode of that type, as I do enjoy the Dark Souls series and games in that style, however I'm not really needing a LoZ Dark Souls like, ever. And I mean, usually what I do with those other games is less conquer and more learn to cheese all the aspects through various guides and cheats. For me the fun of Dark Souls isn't getting "gud", it's finding the way to hit the game in such a way as to align everything to your preferred playstyle. I have nothing to prove.
Which is also why I second looking up guides. For anything. It's fun until it isn't fun, and then, if guides can make it fun again, that's what you should do, without shame.
