Although this isn't new to this game, this is the first time it's actually impacting me in a good long while so i'm gonna complain here for a hot sec.
$40 for a year 1 pass on a $60 game riddled with bugs at launch and minimal story/plot cohesion. This is why everyone waits for 40-60% sales and say that $60 for a game is too much money.
The Year 1 Pass was $40 for some extra doodads (three backpack trophies), instant access to the future specializations w/o gameplay to unlock/purchase them, and access to the episodes a week early. You'll live.
edit: Just remembered the classified assignments, as they are what give the backpack trophies. Seeing as literally all the other major content in the game is free beyond the 7 day early access, still don't see the issue with the pass for this game.
Oh, my mistake, are the classified missions available to all after a week or so? If so i rescind my complaining. Going off the patch notes and their store page that's really not clear.
Nah, your objection stands. You need the pass to play those assignments. The full episodes (which include actual new geography, etc) are delayed a week.

Ack so, yeah its a bummer they're gating story behind a $40 pay wall. Hopefully its good story for those that buy it.
Do the missions actually show up on the map if you can't play them?
More than likely, because that’s how other games with additional paid content work?
l
It hasn't with stuff like the Assassin's Creeds in the past, I remember because there was a weird weekend where the sherlock holmes dlc for Syndicate got unlocked for all and it suddenly popped up on the map out of nowhere. Same with Origins, DLC wasn't added to the map until it was purchased. I know it's different series etc but the broad strokes could be expected to apply to titles from the same publisher.
Using a mission icon as essentially a billboard for (imo) overpriced 20 minute (I don't know for sure, speculating on existing in game examples) missions is a bit shitty.

Actually, Origins new areas were on the map without buying it. The world map had the button for the new areas, you could go to the new maps and see the official screenshots scattered around them, but couldn’t access the areas.

Open world style games, and games with strong online component with additional paid content tend to be gated like this, Everybody gets the bulk of the upgrade, but not everybody can access certain segments and such? IDK... o_o
edit: post above has a good in-game example, lol.
edit2: also, if the missions are 20 minutes long each then they're a lot more than what I thought they would have been.

They show up on the map as a blue star icon, tell you to find an entrance to start them and just as you are about to start the mission you get this image.
“Discover” links you to a page to pay 47 bucks for access.

I guess the equivalent in Div1 would be the supply crates dropping, you get the ping, but you can't open it without the season pass. I don't mind there being extra little missions available, even if I think the pass is bad value, but putting the actual icon on the map if you can't access it is shitty for all the reasons in the comic there.
(20 minutes is just a guess based on things like the G Philips Protocol mission, which is what I would expect these things to be if they are supposed to be short and backstory-ish)
Re-reading what's going on, I think this is all stemming from a massive misunderstanding.
Initially from McMoogal: They're locking the DLC missions behind a $40 paywall?
Response from Tasty: No, the DLC missions are going to be available to everybody after the first 7-days (season pass holders get that 7-day headstart).
Edited response from Tasty: Oh wait...there are classified missions to get pieces of backpack flair that's behind the $40 paywall!
McMoogal: Oh...story missions are locked behind a paywall?
Tasty's response: Only the backpack flair missions are, yes. The DLC stuff is available to everybody after the first 7-days.
So it's sounding like people are equating the classified assignments (for cosmetic backpack flair) with the entirety of the DLC missions.

DLC missions are in the episodes, they're coming with territory expansions as follows:
Episode 1 “D.C. Outskirts: Expeditions”: Explore the surrounding areas of Washington while chasing down elite members of the Outcasts and the Black Tusks and fight for the liberation of the city in new locations. (Summer 2019)
Episode 2 “Pentagon: The Last Castle”: Unveil what secrets lie inside this well-protected maze, one of America’s most iconic locations. (Autumn 2019)
Episode 3: ???
These you have to wait 7 days for. The two (of eight) assignments are what came out now and are exclusive, as if this semantic difference matters.

It actually kinda does matter quite a bit. Especially given the store entry on the "Compare editions" section indicates that the "8 assignments" are specifically not available to the standard editions of Div2 and is a separate entity, completely distinct from the whole "Year 1 Pass" entry.

It kind of feels like a distinction without a difference if content is behind a 40 dollar paywall when they announced "all dlc is free year 1" except it isn't, there are these missions which are behind a 40 dollar pay wall.

From their announcement:
To that end, we will release three Episodes during the course of Year 1, expanding on the story of The Division 2. These Episodes will introduce new narrative driven content, as well as new ways to play the game. This additional content will be free for all players of The Division 2

This is exactly what they said they would do. Exactly.
Large content packs with new game content and modes a la survival or underground free for everyone.
A few smaller story missions with cosmetic rewards for pass holders.
It is easily the most generous setup I have ever seen for an online game like this, and the fact that people are still complaining about it is utterly baffling to me.
The changes to the gear sets is a good starting point to making them actually worthwhile. . .I struggle to think though that they'll be viable versus people picking out their own tailored gear setup.
I'm also REALLY hoping this fucking raid delivers. Tidal Basin, while better than SOME of the other dungeons, did not feel like it was worth the wait even with a final boss that was more involved than blasting in the face. I'm talking about split groups, failable objectives, wizard-tech'd bosses; feels like anything less is just. . .meh.

Guaranteed it’s beaten within an hour.

Yeah. I mean I was sold on all the developer interviews where they were going on an on about "Oh this is soooooo hard in WT5. . .gosh it's going to be so tough!" so I'm taking the difficulty here with a grain of salt. I want to believe. I truly do. . .
Or like challenging Roosevelt against the outcasts with 3+ is a hell of a bitch on that final fight.
The div devs have two settings "easy but fun" "Fuck you hard." I'd be more afraid the raid will be incursions on steroids. Which sure top players will power through, but if they are too hard regular joes won't touch them and they'll be just like incursions in d1.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
