I'll never understand while console makers keep assuming that people want to stand them vertically when virtually every other entertainment appliance that isn't a PC (and entertainment console furniture) has a horizontal orientation.

It’s weird, because the Digital Edition, lacking a key feature, seems like it would be cheaper. But it also necessitates additional storage, which is probably more expensive than a disc drive these days when you’re operating at the speeds that Sony is talking about.
With PS4 all the games, disc or digital, are installed to the hard drive. I don't see that changing for the PS5, so it's the same amount of storage either way.
That crossed my mind as a possibility, but I didn’t realize the PS4 had already gone full install only. I’ve subsisted almost entirely on a diet of PS+ and digital sales this gen.

It was a good and diverse showcase but apart from Forbidden West nothing exploded my skull graphics-wise.
The character models in RE8 were absolutely insane.
As was the graphical whizzbangery of Ratchet & Clank. Good graphics don't always mean photorealistic humanoids. R&C looked REALLY good.
Thank you, I was going to say this. The dimension hopping between planets seemed like something that they couldn't pull off on the PS4. That was some crazy amazing looking sorcery.
4K trailers are up on Playstation YouTube channel. The Iron Giant clarity is something else. Hopefully we get some 60FPS trailers for those games that support it (R&C has to be).

All my current-gen consoles stand vertically, but my setup is far from normal and I appreciate I'm an outlier. I like having the option.

Most of it is too early to tell. For me, I need to hear more about how PSN and backwards compatibility will work.
I know that with the Xbox, if I buy a game, any game regardless of generation, I'll be able to play it on the newest hardware. And that all of the digital games I currently own - which span all Xbox generations - will automatically be available to me there. Presumably with the best version available with their smart delivery system. Will PlayStation/PSN have the same kind of thing? If I buy a digital version of HZD on my PS4, will I automatically have access to a hypothetical PS5 enhanced version for free?
Games are, of course, nice, but as a consumer I really need to know about the QoL features of the platform/brand before deciding to drop a few hundos on a PS5 at launch.

Or, indeed, if you pop in a PS4 disc (assuming you have the disc drive version).

Speaking of which, it'd be nice if discs weren't required to launch games after they've been installed. I have FFXIV ARR on disc. All of the expansions have been digital purchases. But, to play the game, I need the disc in the drive. As a physically disabled dude who relies on other people to swap discs, that's really annoying and the opposite of accessible.

Spider-Man Miles Morales. It's a small thing, but I appreciated that it wasn't just SM2. Like, it's a different thing, but the nomenclature doesn't give me 'sequel/follow' vibes, even if it's literally a sequel (built with a similar engine by the same people in the same setting, or whatever the case might be). I really enjoyed Miles in the PS4 S-M game, so I hope they follow up with breathing even more life into the character. I'm still amazed that between the game and Into The Spider-Verse, the entertainment world gave us two awesome renditions of the character so close together.
Project Athia: agreed that it looks neat. I'm liking this glowing monster motif they have going on.
Returnal: Sci-Fi Groundhog Day has my interest, especially once they started showing the combat. A narrative explanation for players dying and restarting? From the description the character herself gives, that's... kind of what it felt like.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits: yeah, Zelda meets Pikmen for sure.
Little Devil Inside: the 'bomb drop' got a laugh, I'm not gonna lie. And I liked the art style.
Deathloop: I've had this on my radar since the first teasers came out.
Pragmata: I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. Depending on the actual gameplay mechanics, I could be down with this. It was a whole pile of WTF though, but gorgeous to look at.
H2FW: Fuck. Yes. Exactly what I wanted. 100% on board.
If I'm being entirely honest, S-M:MM and H2FW are something I'm confident enough in to pre-order. Not, like, a $400 2 foot tall Thunderjaw edition (well... probably not), but throw in a few skins or something and I'm in for a Digital Deluxe.
The others have some degree of intrigue, and a mix of further actual gameplay being shown and impressions from critics and/or forumers I can trust might push me over the edge. Or hell, a nice steep sale, especially once a holiday season or two has gone by and the 2nd/3rd generation games are lining up and some of the launch titles are like $5-10 apiece.
Gotta say, I was pretty happy to see that all play out.

God I have missed R&C.
Yeah aside from the ray tracing thing being a big thing, i think the big differences for this generation are going to be a lot of under the hood stuff, like the stunning rapid environment loading. That actually could have gigantic gameplay implications and Ratchet really gave a great impression on what those could be. The fidelity of models and environments may hit diminishing returns but the dynamism of how they can used may change significantly.

I joked about the Gearbox game being dash-heavy, but I do think that’s indicative of the kind of thing we’ll see. ‘What if you could change environments incredibly rapidly?’ could lead to some neat places.
And further ballooning of asset development costs, I suppose.

My uneducated guess is that the engineers may have been struggling with heat dissipation as rumoured and made the box larger to compensate
I don't begrudge any console designer trying to reconcile specs with ergonomics and heat management tbh it's all wizardry to me
And no, looks like marketing is still playing chicken on pricing
Doesn't surprise me. Supply pricing and demand is still in flux over the virus, so they'll probably not put a price on it until they start production and actually know how much they have to charge.
As for the design... I mean it's no Series X refrigerator, but yeah it's larger. You want PC power... you need PC size.
Haven’t finished my chores to watch any games yet but god damn that thing looks like a mid-2000’s router just before everyone realised nobody wants to be able to see routers

I would be very surprised (albeit pleasantly so) if Sony had their own version of Smart Delivery (which, just to be clear, is only guaranteed for Microsoft games... otherwise publishers have to choose to support it).
I wonder if there would be a market for a... "Grown Adult" (name obviously needs more workshoping and tweaking) version of consoles. Wherein it has the same exact specs, but comes in nothing but a black rectangular box. For the person who is not interested one iota about aesthetics and looks, and just wants something that will disappear in the background.
"Grown Adult" sounds like I'm trying to make a hot take against people for being kiddy or something, and I don't want to. It's more along the lines of... when I was a kid, I was all over shoes that had crazy shit on them like lights in the back. While as an adult, I don't give a frigging hoot what my shoes look like so long as they fit and are comfortable. I don't think the PS5 looks awful or anything or want to cast shade at people who love it. But if they had that, and a version that was just a black box... I'd probably buy the black box version.

Generally all you need to validate it is the disc slot, which they were kind enough to show.
It "looks" accurate based on the disc slot of the PS4.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
If so, it's huge! Just looked over at my Pro.

My Pro dwarfs my Xbox One X already. Which is well over twice the size of my docked Switch.
