Fucking WalMart. Still says in order tracking my PS5 is coming today but I got two emails this morning around 8am informing me that 'due to high demand' items in my order will be delayed and they 'will let me know' when to expect them or if they'll have to cancel.
Fuckers couldn't tell me this yesterday so there'd be a non-zero chance I could luck into a release day system somewhere else? Ugh.
I live in New York City, so it's laughable that I will be able to put a PS5 in my cart and get to checkout before it's snapped up at the Manhattan stores. Hope I have better luck with the Walmart drops today.

I've had the opposite fear that middle of South Carolina will get like -1 box for the whole state.

Honestly, Walmarts in the middle of nowhere (or at least 45 minutes or so outside a metro area) are actually good places to scout out hard-to-find stuff. Maybe not for launch, but in the coming months.
I can't even click on a PS5 on Amazon. It just takes me to the dual sense controller. If I try to change the selection to the console it just reloads the controller page.
I had a PS5 in my cart from my local BestBuy. I followed their advice of trying to check out as quickly as possible, only to have it tell me I need to verify my account using an emailed code...which took about 15 minutes to actually show up in my email, by which time every store in the vicinity had sold out. So, thanks Best Buy.
Why are companies so bad at this? Like, I get that there's only so much supply to go around but the amount of frustration and misinformation and disappointment is just ridiculous.
Are any stores definitely not release any more today so I can stop refreshing?
Best Buy has gone from having a "Coming Soon" button with a pop-up explaining that they'd be releasing more every few minutes to just saying "Sold Out", so I think they may just be out now. At least for stores near me. It being an 'in store pick-up only' thing makes it more complicated.

I don't know why there isn't a preorder or queuing system into perpetuity. Put your money down as stock becomes available you will get it. I don't know why they need to wait for stock to arrive, they know they'll get it at some point. Seems like it's less stressful for everyone involved, you'd probably save a ton by not having people just refresh your webpage constantly.

I used the phone code thing and it went very fast
I had to do it twice, but it did work after that, so for anyone trying, maybe phone code instead of email.

I didn't have the option. I clicked "payment options" or whatever and it went straight to a page saying "Verify your account by entering the code we emailed you". The only option was "resend email". And it's not like they don't have my phone number. Hell, I was going to pay with my best buy credit card.

Because with the exception of Amazon and Walmart, most of these companies do not realize the importance of technology. They think they are still retail companies; they're not, they need to become tech companies to compete with the big boys. Until they do that, this is going to keep happening on big launch days.

Been refreshing the Best Buy page occasionally and sometimes see an option to shop open-box. Usually the button is unresponsive, but a couple of minutes ago I actually managed to add an open-box PS5 to my cart (at a $25 dollar discount!) thinking maybe it was a weird resultant fuckup from someone’s aborted attempt to buy a new unit, but alas, there was no option for in-store pickup and they greyed out the shipping option. I wonder what would have happened if it had let me finish that transaction.

I had that earlier, but the app and website work again.

I mean it seems reasonable as all hell for retail companies too! You're losing money having the employees just answer the phone to say "No, we don't have any stock. Try to call back on Tuesday maybe. No I don't know what time." It's not like Amazon or WalMart are allowing you to place a preorder now either, there must be some advantage to having people crash your site and have a negative customer service experience as they try in vain to pay for something. It just seems ridiculous I couldn't preorder anything that doesn't have some sort of predetermined limited run (only 1000 copies will ever be made!)
If it has a price and will definitely exist, just let me preorder the thing and say "Great, you're scheduled to get PS5 #2553! We'll notify you when it ships!"

Eh, I think they're fully aware of what they're doing. If you just make a digital line for people to wait for their order, people stop coming to the site once they put their money down. If they visit the site twenty times in a day for a week to try to get a system, the store can push other shit at you constantly.
It's basically a crappy form of gambling. They want you to think you can "win" by visiting the site to get a system, but you probably won't and in the meantime they can try to sell you other shit. They don't want to make it convenient because that means fewer eyeballs on their merchandise.
Honestly, even Verizon has a better Backorder process for phones. This isn't hard to implement. It does require a lot of development across your inventory system though.
Is anyone getting the charging station? I haven't seen a solid reason to get a second controller yet and so it feels a bit silly to get the controller charger thing when USB C charging is so easy.

Never had any issues with cord charging on PS4. And PS5 controller supposedly has even better battery life so def feels unnecessary for my usage.

Finding a Switch at launch in NYC, at least for me, was a similar shitshow. And that was back when you could just go to stores without worrying about a virus.
I mean yes, Gamestop was selling Switch bundles at the time, but nobody wants those. Ever.

Got one in my cart and then of course Walmart crapped itself. I'm sure some bots got through. but I doubt many humans did. Site is basically down for me now.
Fucking hell. Walmart switched from coming at noon to check back at 3 basically instantaneously
I'm still getting the add to cart button which rotates forever and doesn't do anything.
I refreshed for the hell of it and got add to cart. Rotated forever, then got 'an error occurred'. Tried again " this item is sold out". Now back to "try again at 3P"
Walmart crashed after I had placed the final 'place order' button and the loading circle was spinning, but I got an email confirmation and my credit card got charged so I think I probably made it through.

DAMN IT!!! I had a PS5 in my cart from Walmart, I was almost entirely through the checkout process, then the site started hanging and crashing, asked me to log back in, wouldn't accept my password, locked me out and asked me to reset my password, by the time I had it reset moments later it sent me all the way back to the cart and told me it was sold out.
I'm not even sure how bots would have gotten through with this. Their site is basically dead.
Bots skip all the frontend shit and go directly to where the digital interactions happen, so the while the site is fighting to load 3/10s of a banner for you, a bot has already exchanged the handful of lines of text that let it loot all available inventory.
I got as far as getting one in my cart myself, but naturally it was "out of stock" by the time I got to processing it. Which should definitely not be legal, because if that is in my cart then I should be guaranteed the item the same as if I was in the store.
Oh well, I had pretty low expectations for success. Maybe by the time I get one they'll have the memory repair bug fixed up so I don't have to worry.

This exact thing happened to me with Target last night.
I originally thought someone stole my card when 500 bucks disappeared.
Edit: so it is worth it to check your bank account and email even if it looks like it didn't go through.
I actually managed to get one in the cart despite all that, the add to cart vs out of stock still seems to be fluctuating a bit. Same nonsense. It did move it to saved for later, which I guess might be an edge up for 3PM since you view it from the cart screen instead of the product screen. Ed: No, clicking on saved to cart just takes you back to product screen, so it'd actually be worse to do it that way.

I understand how bots work, but the actual API layer at Walmart hard crashed. There's no magical way the bots can skip past the API, even if they are skipping the UI layer. They were belching "no upstream" errors all over the place, meaning their entire back end was basically not responding to calls. I wonder how many orders actually got completed, versus the stock got reserved but the order didn't fully reconcile.
