I think I'm just going to start over. I completely ignore butchering in my rush to get farming going. Winters almost over but I have no alchohol, no food and six of my 17 dwarves have already died of starvation. My entire fortress was pretty poorly designed as well.
Dig straight for the river, making the corridor a few tiles wide. When you hit the river it'll overflow. Use the mud created from the flooding to plant a farm.
Also, what starting loadout are you using? I can usually manage almost an entire winter's food stocks with extra dwarf ranks and equipment.
For the most part I'm using the one recommended in the OP. This time is going better, but my farmers won't farm. They say they need seeds but I know I have the seends since I bought about a dozen of each type when I started out.

that'd be caused by
1) seeds are in transition from or to a stockpile
2) did you designate what to plant via the Q menu?
I think it would be sweet if there were a sci-fi version of this game.
Mars Colony or something.
While we're at it, we should have a Elf Version so we could prance around in our stockings and spock ears
Isn't that one of the long term goals?

I was talking about playable elves,
ELF FOREST RETREAT: Yes, elves for the elf people -- but thinking more general, as we list all these racial civilizations, we should think in broad terms and use the civilization definitions to allow any type of civilization to be played. Elves will provide some necessary extra elements for this process. Mixing the cliff dwelling, wilderness dwelling, town building, good vs. evil tendencies into a robust interface for civilization building is a long-term goal. Related to Bloat25.

Is there any way to get your dwarves to move something they dropped on a door? Of of the doors to my farming cluster is blocked open because some dwarf dropped some mechanisms on it.

Use T or Q to take down the door, then rebuild it. The object will get removed when the furniture hauler sets up the door. If you've got a 2+-wide entryway, make sure to lock any other doors while the blocked one is being replaced.
Ok jesus fuck, how do I get farms to work? I build them and then they sit there doing nothing but having a farmer stand around over them. How do I do them?
Question: http://mkv25.net/dfma/viewmap.php?view_mapid=50 the tileset on this guy's map has a grid border for mining desingations, any idea how I can get the same tileset? It'd be much easier this way than winging the size of my rooms.
Actually, this looks really damn handy, anyone know?

One rougher things to learn about adventure mode is that dwarves can't wear human sized armor and vice versa. There's no real indication for it, so you tend to find out the hard way. As for equipping weapons, as long as the object you want to use is in a free hand, it should count as equipped.
I know armor is done differently, but I've recently reinstalled DF since due to messing around in the files, the concept of armor got baleeted from my game. I was walking around in adventure mode with just a sword and a shield, surviving quite well actually. Of course I had about 8 or 9 meatsh... I mean followers to soak up the damage for me.

Yup, it's designated and no one is moving items to stockpiles right now according to the list.
Ok, apparently I can plant pig tails but not cave wheat. I know I have cave wheat seeds though. Wrong season perhaps?

It's called adventure mode.
Does it let you take out an elf, cut off their ears, and wear it as a necklace? If so, I really need to start playing adventure mode.
It puts the lotion in the basket.

That's in the future dev pages of DF.

Hal's entry looks... worrying.
A farmer will be along to plant seeds soon enough

Come're ya little bastards
Also, how to I equip dwarves with the weapons and armor that I've forged?
