Graphics mode is the way forward. My Dorfs look like Dorfs now! I find it makes the biggest difference for things like cats and kittens which you have 100s of running all over the place, makes them much easier to block out.
I was going to change tilesets but never bothered. I'm glad I didn't now, it's like the Matrix, I don't see the code just what's there.
Same. Besides, I'll probably find it harder to wholesale slaughter the kittens and puppies and foals if they have tiny little pixel eyes staring back at me.

Technically, graphics mode is the way for Toady to spend a ton of time on making the game unnecessarily pretty, rather than making the game more of the awesome emergent-design-fest it already is. Just sayin'.

Plus other people seem to be doing well enough adding graphics themselves for everyone who must have pictures in their stories.
Miscarriages take a long time to get over from. Assign that person a nice bedroom and perhaps give them their own table in the dinning hall if you're that worried about losing them to madness.

WTF!
One of my fisherdwarves went berserk while taking care of an injured trapper. The trapper's spine is broken, but he managed to hobble away from the fisher guy draw out his crossbow, and shoot the dude right in the face!
Guys I got a birdge suspended now it wont let me resume it!!
What Rane said.
Also, check the suspension message too. If it's because they can't find a path you may have to scrap the bridge and try one that's slightly longer/in a different position. When I had a pair of dwarves go nuts and destroy both of my bridges that crossed the river it took almost all summer for my dwarves to figure out how to buid it without access to materials on both sides of the river. I now keep stores of blocks and bars on both sides of the river and chasm in case of suicidal bridge destroying dwarves.
If I tell my guys to use swords and shields, and make dark stone short swords and leather shields, will they spa with them or do I have to provide wooden weapons or something?

Some random dwarf is carrying my only battle axe. I turned off Wood Cutting in his labor menu, but he won't drop it! Any ideas what I could be missing?
Could someone walk me through the animal aspects (trapping, training, breeding etc). It's about the only thing left I have no clue about and my trappers/animal trainers don't seem to be doing, well, anything.
I've made a military of two soldiers. After 4 seconds of sparing one of them is now missing an arm.
I thought I'd avoid this by making them wrestlers for their training. If nothing else happens, at least they'll get their stats up, which can be more important than skills.
Except of course when the rare wrestling injury does occur it's gouged eyeballs and stuff.

This is just rubbish. Toady put in graphics mode and then let all the users do the hard work of actually making tilesets. The latest update is nothing graphical, it's just hardcore crazy features. I have to admit to being totally terrified of trying to run a fortress with a Z axis.
Obsidian swords + poorly skilled soldiers sparring = death and maiming.
No one should be sparring with a weapon until they have armor and good skills with that armor. Have then wrestle until then. Otherwise you will constantly be dealing with military dwarves going berserk after sitting in their room for a year wounded.
So do dwarves ever actually recover from injuries? My legendary Metalsmith was jumped by a fire imp and took what appearrs to be some fairly serious wounds. He's been lying in a bed with the red cross flashing on him ever since. The thing is that was over a year ago.

Flashing red cross is pretty bad, he may be doomed.

The prospect of running a fortress with a Z axis actually doesn't terrify me.
What terrifies me is trying to run a fortress with a Z axis using the minimal interface and almost nonexistant set of instructions this game has

Damn, well at least he killed the little bastard. At least I think it was him...kinda hard to remember at this point.

go over bridge
press S
need more space
if that happens, there should be oodles of space after the chasm

arrows do a lot of damage when thrown...
a lot!
107 dwarves and i've had a 'put a door here' job up for about half an hour, and still nobody is doing it.

AAAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAH
Where does it all come from, we've never been attacked. Half the crops I grow end up rotting in the fields too
They don't seem to spar very often, I need them to protect us from the chasm monsters!
she has like 6 pet cats and they keep adobting her!
