So yet another dwarf got possessed. Seriously I'm seeing very high rates of possession compared to other mood types out here in the haunted wilderness.
I just had the ceiling collapse on peoples heads, again. The fact that the cells are not square seems to make me fuck things up a whole lot, could someone tell me how to get the grid to show when you have an area marked yellow to be mined?
I think it was discussed in the old thread somewhere, I dunno, but I cant find it

And his finished product? A talc bed.
Can you even make stone beds normally?
Beds are the only type of furniture that can only be made out of wood. Artifacts seem to totally ignore those rules, though. One of my jewelers carved a bed out of solid Aventurine.

Find the solid white square in your tileset, and edit it to have a light grey border all around.
I think I've finally gotten the hang of this fortress. I'll probably finish it up tonight. Hopefully I don't kill many more dwarves. I think There needs to be a doomsday device though with an inocuous looking lever....
I was going to do that. I imagined it would work if I built all the floodgates, linked them up and pulled the lever to open them. Then built the others and linked them up, when I pulled the lever again the original gates would close and the new ones would open.

Doesnt work that way unfortunately. If some are closed and some are open, pulling the lever will try close/open them (depending on the last linked action) and they will all end up open or closed and in synch with each other again.

If you are talking about the lever in the goblin zoo, that one opens the dwarbridge. It is very unfatal, the only way someone could get killed by it is if they are on their way into the fortress and stop to stare confused at the wall that suddenly appeared before deciding to take the longway around, and someone "happens" to use the lever again.
...
Do it.
EDIT: Misread that , you were talking about making a doomsday device, not about existing ones.

Man, fuckfloodgates. I began building a floodgate wall based defence in my fortress, and I have been working on it for like 2 in game years. Not worth it, and they can even be destroyed. Drawbridges work better most of the time.
Hahahahahaa, the Elves came to make a complaint about my tree-massacreing practices. My Baron told him to fuck off, and before the elf diplomat could reply, the baron went to bed and fell asleep. The diplomat is just waiting by the bed for him to wake up and get an answer.
Turtle shell should be fine. Are you sure he's not stuck on anything else?
I'm pretty sure you can get shells from cave lobsters as well.
Can you actually catch cave lobsters, though? I bought some from a caravan and they do indeed leave cave lobster shells behind, but I have never seen my fisherdwarfs actually catching any.

You put a trap in the underground river to catch them.
I dont think Urist will be getting back up... a squadmate smashed him in the spine with a warhammer during sparring practice 5 YEARS AGO and he's still in bed with a yellow spine injury.
Hmmm. I've got a guy like that, but apparently he can get up to kill people when he needs to. If only my mechanics and masons could fashion him some stype of chair with wheels.
It's not random, it overflows if your tunnel hits it at a point where there's built up pressure (ie won't happen if you open at a riverbank). Built up pressure meaning, that if there wasn't a rock wall there, the water would flow to the adjacent square by itself.

With spine or head injuries just lock the door and wait for nature to take its course. Even if the injury heals, having suffered a head or spine injury makes the dwarf useless forever. They will be constantly falling unconscious in the middle of tasks and be unable to complete just about anything.
I've dug plenty of times directly onto the river with and without floods occuring. While digging out onto a beach will definitely prevent a flood, digging out directly onto the river is not a guarantee of a flood, it just has a chance of happening.
I had a veritable hoard of ratmen poor out of the chasm. This cat tried bravely to fend a few of them off. He was rescued by a recruit, but not before he was gravely injured.
edit: Forgot to mention this: The first wave of ratmen sprung from ambush on to...another cat. Perhaps this was an attempt at revenge. Another wave of ratmen was held in check by cows until my marksdwarves showed up to finish them off. Maybe having more animals than dwarves isn't so bad.
Animals are weird in how they respond to injuries. One time I had a war dog with a red wound on his left lung (fucking mandrils). He survived (passing out every three steps) and eventually died of old age years later.

Also, I look away for a second, forgetting to set up the new animals for slaughter and my animals list jumps by TWO PAGES of puppies.
I'm slaughtering all the females.

they will *NOT* collect item 4 unless item 3 is available!
so look at his demands list, and whats in the workshop (t) and figure out what hes stuck on.
also, carpentry can make wooden shields iirc.
Also, suck it, Elves!
At least, that's how it is in my experience.

Those kids should totally get a bonus for wathcing her fight. I have some kids who are dabbling growers and engravers, but it could just be random.
edit:Man, this game flies when I'm using XP and not Vista.
