I have decided to name the original group my gnoll rap bard character Katt Dogg was in, GWA, after the elements of hip-hop. Those are MCin', DJin', Graffiti'in, and B-Boy'in (Break dancing). So his birth name is Em'Cee Ess'Wun, and the rest were named Dee'Jei, Gra'fi'ti, and Be'boi.

His twin is literally KRS1 phonetically spelled out, Kae'Arh Ess'Wun, and I love naming stuff off of music and using the Araki method.

My Dark Heresy players killed the Unexpectables.

Technically they killed the Surprise Boys which are their converted characters into DH both ability and lorewise but still. It was a really fun fight. The Taskmaster, a weedy lizard beastman, did the most work with his Hunter MK I optical visor and a sonic compound bow that blows people back. Despair Gravenspeech got like three perils of the warp and narrowly avoided exploding (into a greater daemon). It was rad.

I might convert Critical Role season 1 next for an encounter in the next adventure series. Feral worlder barbarian, hive gunmetal desperado, ratling psyker bard, ratling psyker with unholy effects from the daemonology tree, lizard beastman psyker, highborn assassin, and highborn assassin but with a pet orsun (a six legged snow bear creature) I guess.

Edit: Also not-Keyleth. Maybe Chaos Undivided Sorceress?
Edit 2: half eldar ain’t happening. Maybe a craftworld eldar seer trapped in armour controlled by a Slaaneshi daemon in a farcical imitation of craftworld walkers with a corrupted soul stone upon it. I kind of have that concept with a character called Mallaithe, although he’s human and closer to what would happen if Guts was in berserk mode all the time with daemon armour and a daemon sword controlling him, but he’s not a psyker.
Edit 3: Anaesthesia is also a little like this but she’s fully in control, there’s no daemons, and uses haywire fields and sedatives. I get a lot of mileage out of being trapped in armour apparently.

My players killed two dragons and an evil ironman suit in Dark Heresy with their gunship tonight. It was great, I looked up the rules and studied and got everything together (some of this stuff sitting for months beforehand) and I got that energy and excitement that pushed through the whole thing. Man I love when a fight is paced just right. Played the Top Gun soundtrack throughout it and it got me pumped.

They also had to fall through an ethereal storm with antique style parachutes and all three suffered visions like Event Horizon but way worse but got to ground safely. Now they’re going to go through a ringer of minibosses and adversaries from past adventures they finally get to clean up along with new faces.

Edit: I love how my friend plays his psyker. She’s always coming up with smart ideas on how to use her abilities like using Erasure to stop someone from reacting to a traumatic event by making them forget it or Crush to stop the arbitrator from chopping his own leg off because he’s hallucinating a giant worm crawling up it. The player understands the game system really well too so he understands how to get the most out of her powers.

I love my players in the Dark Heresy game I GM and the game I play in. I have been playing a DnD game with someone troublesome for the past like six weeks and oh my god all those complaints I made from months ago just don’t matter now that I know what playing with an asshole who always interrupts people, derails the game, and is so long winded in just trying to tell the GM what he’s trying to do is like. So much dragging out of shit he is told no to. Just cooperate, dude! He also gets pissy when people interrupt him for talking and arguing on for like three minutes at a time and has the gall to act like a victim when he gets backlash from what he does. I’m going to make clear that I am posting with only slight to moderate hyperbole.

He doesn’t even make up for it with good roleplay or system mastery or whatever. He asked if my gnoll monk would act as a reward for his “warband”. Now I will be fair that she was acting out of character and being “horny on main” for a hot second at the end of a session but not to an obnoxious extent (me and the group have a good comfort level with that stuff). She actually had a reason (I cleared with the GM) that was in character for her for one npc she liked but wow I was not ok with being asked to be a reward.

It’s amazing — and by amazing I mean completely unsurprising — just how many of the qualities of That Guy RPG players are direct results of toxic masculinity.

I don't know if it's that far, but he also told the genasi player, whose character is inter-binary presenting but does personally identify as male, that they are totally a female because... I don't know.

It says facists and that's my fault probably. The wings will be burnt to a crisp and smoking. Rolling back the guns to bolt action Mosin Nagants.

I wanted to do an analogue fantasy thing to how fascist states are sometimes put into fantasy settings. I call the nation the Democratic People's United Soviet Socialist Republic of Scalovia. It's supposed to have a not-subtle-at-all Animal Farm theme of big hypocrisy where, contrary to propaganda, the grand leader Uhlio's dragon hoard still keeps getting bigger. Not for tankies. Also there's supposed to be an alt with the soldiers having fireball scrolls instead of rifles.

I need to turn this into something on the blog along with the alternate nomad gnoll culture inspired by West African influences including griots. I really don't like DnD 5E's version of always hungry gnolls or previous editions making them kind of just more barbarous than barbarous-all-the-time orcs (which I also don't like) nor just making them snarling, aggressive, weird-laughing, only-warrior culture creatures. I kind of find all the previous boring.

I post stuff related to DnD here often rather than the DnD thread because the stuff I talk about has overlap with other roleplaying games or just personal lore I make. If I had something that was strictly DnD I would post it and have posted it in that thread.

It doesn’t work with the character I created nor the world my GM is making. Also I loathe, loathe, loathe exceptions that prove the rule where one creature of a race is civilized and “stands against their nature” but the rest are barbaric. That’s what Kae’Arh would have been under 5E’s gnoll monster manual lore.

Try adding ‘hungry’ to various things and decide which sounds the most threatening. I think it works better the more mundane it is:
    The Hungry Dark
    The Hungry Worms
    The Hungry Satellites
    The Hungry Words
    The Hungry Grass

In fact, I’m feeling kinda hungry myself...

Like “Always hungry” is not an issue. I like Wendigos. Just doesn’t work for a culture with nuance like the gnolls in my friend’s campaign.

I would like to make an always hungry abomination for Dark Heresy now though.

My players killed essentially a host of The Darkness and Anaesthesia tonight. The latter turned into grey goo because surprise she’s actually archaeotech nanomachines and she’ll be back. She gave a pretty good fight too but kept rolling low on the haywire arc device she has called the Penumbra Machina.

The Not-Darkness turned out to be the embodiment of human fear of the dark and was freed from his prison to enact revenge on the founder of the big bad evil group but not before telling about why that founder has his powers.

Also this game was good. We actually redid the story we did but with a different GM and two new players with key changes. I am the type of guy you can trust to not use meta knowledge so the GM was good with it. Number one the psychic giant spider was changed to an actually harmless voiceless giant gardensnake. Number two the water golem crossroads demon was switched out for Papa Obo from Vodoun. We also had a bit of a breaking even where the immortal patrician was allowed to keep sacrificing corrupt politicians and criminals but saved a girl from being exchanged for the patrician’s wife. Vs the first time where all the immortals died and Sol Demsky left with a canvass bag of rich people goods.

I have a dilemma. One of my players have had a very bad run of luck compared to the others when it comes to dying in Dark Heresy. For those that don't know, you have fate points in that system which essentially act as videogame lives. You burn them if you don't want to give up your character when you will die.

This character has none. I haven't been specifically targeting him, he just keeps getting in loony toons-esque crossfire situations where he will unluckily be hit by a blast weapon or a psyker power meant for someone else. This is the final adventure of the second campaign in a chronological series of three. He has had a very good run. Saved the world they're on a few times. I gave him a robocop makeover when he lost his final fate to give him rad weapons that pop out of his arms and increased armour and ability from his new best quality bionics (which he got because the veteran players helped out a Magos with an STC).

It is not certain he will die but I am putting these folks through the wringer with this finale. So the question is, because it's the best and fairest matchup, do I have a chosen of Khorne (like the human ones from Warhammer Fantasy) who is the miniboss of the encounter coming up go against him, or give him an easier chance with the khornate beastmen and other aspiring champions but match up this expert melee fighter with the psyker and a techpriest players who will have a much harder time once he closes?

Those have all their fate from the beginning, by the way. They have been very lucky. I'm not a killer GM but I do like to make tough and tense combats.

Once that character dies, there's no fate to burn. He has a backup waiting and I even have a backup waiting to replace him in the current adventure that the player can use in place of him right after.

Let me know if I'm parsing this correctly. Your choices are to have the party A)Fight a Chosen of Khorne that will likely kill off one of the players who doesn't have more lives left, or B) Fight a weaker beastman and some other aspiring champions, and maybe throw in some additional challenging enemies for the other members of the party?

Is it possible to put this decision on the players?
Maybe they have a chance to interrupt a Chaos Ritual that's going to imbue the the Chosen with power but will kill the Khornate Cultists performing it.
If they rush to the ritual site they fight the beastman and other aspiring champions, disrupting the ritual before it can be completed. If they delay, or just choose to let the ritual finish, they fight the Chosen of Khorne instead and the other Khornate cultists are already dead.

No combine A and B and I’m thinking about matchups. Who targets who first.

This is the party that has killed three of my bosses in one multi-attack each. I’m not being unfair with the total of 6 guys I’m sending their way including that guy.

I've an idea for the dilemma thing: If they challenge the chosen to a duel, they can buy time to call the gunship waiting around the haywire storm above the plateau they're on to fire their powerful lascannon into the stone valley the acolytes and khornates are in. That way, they still would have to fight this champion, but be given the ability to stun or outright kill the rest while only having to deal with him who will just sizzle the snow away and dig himself from out of the stones.

They also could retreat a bit and try to kill the khornates as they charge down an incline. They also will know if they engage them where they're at the khornates, except for the champion, will be spending a turn to frenzy. That will give the players at least one free turn to do what they want. I'll let them know their options during the game.

That character I talked about died in a blaze of glory against that champion of Khorne. He got three attacks off while dying and caught the chosen by surprise. They all gave a good fight, and except for maybe one attack, which still critted and gave 20 damage, I didn't go easy on them. He's very happy with how it went off and he's still playing as he now gets to play as a powerful sister of battle until his normal replacement character can join.

I had a die roll multiple times to determine who the chosen was going to attack. Once again, that player just has bad luck and got picked after getting his gob smacked with a shield holding the captive eye of a greater Tzeentchian daemon the dude clawed out himself. He gets back up after being stunned and left alone by the quasi-chivalrous beastmen and aspiring champions (hey their prophet is from feudal Knight world). The last party member who wasn't stunned by these folk, the khornates getting just absolutely lucky rolls, and critting them gets a speech and a genuine offer to join the prophet. I go a bit meta with it, but since in-character these people don't really have friends, hobbies, or much besides the inquisition and killing I try to convince them they're basically Khornates in all but name. They improve themselves to kill more accurately, they amass weaponry to kill more efficiently, and even their built-up knowledge is just to learn how to murder better. The difference between him and them, the prophet tells them, is that he isn't hiding behind pretension, self-righteousness, and lofty tomes to justify their conflagrations. Arbitrator Nox stands back up, and unfortunately even with a sound stummer utterly fails his stealth test. The prophet notices and welcomes him back in the fray. The psyker attempts one last ditch effort to save herself with the domination of the rest of the prophet's warband to attack him and make him waste his reactions. None get through. They receive help in the form of a radical inquisitor's special forces, an abhuman beastman clothed in carapace and wielding a bolter and chainaxe. This was a guest player. The warband is distracted enough. However, the prophet chooses between the two acolytes on death's door to attack. The die is cast. The arbitrator is to fall. He crashes down a halberd made from the claw of his patron, the Brass Prince, onto the arbitrator. His power sword is broken in half. He is skewered. The prophet does something odd. Pulling him along the rest of the polearm as the arbitrator sputters, he holds him in his last moments. He invokes a name that meant something greater to him when he was truly human. A regret. Nox takes this moment of weakness and knows he has only the strength for three more attacks. He makes the best out of them. With his power stake he stabs through the back of the champion four times with him none-the-wiser until the thing breaks through his malefic ebon armor, leaking ichor and showing the prophet's true form as a red ethereal mass within the armour. The runes around the prophet go blank and he goes limp. Arbitrator Nox takes the moment to kill off two more of the warband threatening the other acolytes. The prophet and the arbitrator are at a standstill. The prophet looks back up, and tells Nox he's more than what was expected, and falls to red mist as he is banished back to the warp for a time (and burns a fate point). Nox falls on his back. The psyker moves to him and Nox makes her promise to tell his brother what happened. She complies. He fades to black.

Now, canon-wise the next part is not uber legit but fuck it I wanted his death to be semi-okay. His skull is added to a realm of brass, sulfur, bone, and blood. His fighting spirit aspect of his soul that defined him is Khorne's now. The prophet took it when he felled him. The rest of him broken, unknown, scared, but together awakes in a realm of confusion. He sees around him the rolling storm of the warp. Then he finds the warm comforting glow like a bonfire. The whisp finds his way to his true master.
