Ah yes, Varys. The guy who wanted Viserys to sit on the Iron Throne.

Hey look it was basically Calvinball in those early days, you had to back that particular horse and see if something better came along in the meantime

He could have helped Robert be a better king instead of undermining him.

    He did both.

    Varys was playing all sides.

But he didn't. He basically stood by as everyone plotted against Robert.

I mean, he explicitly didn’t. He gave Robert good advice and tried to lead Ned down the right path.

Varys led Ned down the path to war with the Lannisters. Remember the scene where Arya overhears Varys and Ilyrio under the Red Keep? They were talking about the civil war paving the way for an invasion by Khal Drogo.

It came up somewhere else but I want to appreciate out loud how good a piece of writing "A Lannister always pays his debts" is.

That was Varys acknowledging what was about to happen and how it would help his own plans, but I don't remember him causing it. Littlefinger used Lysa Arryn and the capture or Ned Stark to stoke the war.

Varys basically spends that conversation saying there's no way he can prevent or slow down the war though, he's lamenting because if he could hold the realm together long enough for the invasion to happen a lot fewer would die.

It took me a second to remember what they even were. "Hear me Roar" is trash-tier.

I just got the Fantasy Flight card game (it's based on the books and not the show which is a pretty big plus at this point) and I'm staring at the house words

Baratheon's being "OURS IS THE FURY" seems like an underrated one!

The Great Houses got most of the really good ones, thankfully.

Lions are fairly common in the westerlands, which is why the great house from the region uses them as their sigil

Note that these might not be the lions we think of, given that the westerlands are known for their hills (where all the gold ore is). It's possible they might be somewhere between a mountain lion and a savannah lion. But the males definitely have manes.

Yeah it's one of those things that sounds kind of off at first but then you think about it and you're like...shit, that's pretty badass.

They are extinct for the most part, IIRC. But there used to be lions on the western plains.

EDIT: No wait, I remember now. The Clegane's get their standard and lands from when they sacrificed 3 hounds to save Tywin's father from a wild plains lioness.

funny that they talk with authority about 'where the story ends,' considering the whole thing was a grand-scale experiment into the power of a story that takes place in-media-res: the dumping of a hapless audience into a world much bigger than they understood, where individual narratives enriched the world rather than vice-versa

    Good thread on Daenerys:

Not sure if D+D can land this plane, but I do think this is what makes sense.

The plane is already in pieces, as seen by the cuts in S08E03

I really don't get it. This season so very obviously totally rushed.
Were Weiss & Benioff so extremely overconfident, or do they just want to get it over with?

The age-old question of whether they actually thought this was good, or they just want to get it over before they destroy their reputations.

See while I don’t agree with all the writing decisions I think it would have been a lot better with more time. A lot of the problems stem from jumping to the conclusions without earning it.

Inside of a dog...it's too dark to read.

Yeah I mean.. I'm not mad if a character dies or does something I don't like.

I'm sad when it's obvious you're just watching a summary of what's happening. It totally breaks all suspension of disbelief. You're not wondering what your favourite hero, villain, antagonist or protagonist will do next, you're just dreading what bullshit surprise the writers will come up with next.

    Whoops.

Just... hand it off to some better writers, take a step back and still take all the glory! It wouldn’t have been hard.

  • SeGaTaiSeGaTai Registered User regular
They arguably have enough glory as they have their next job lined up, why spend money on better writers when they can just piece, plus it'll be super easy to say it's impossible to please all the fans with whatever terrible ending they put out, too much build up, blah blah blah

Another thing the show failed to adapt from the books:

People pointing out that for supposed master plotters, Varys (and Illyrio) seem to spend a lot of time making shit up as they go along.
