House Lannister's motto is "We've got the best musical theme in this whole damn show."

Followed by The Rains of Castamere on a four hour loop.

I've been listening to the books while exercising and came up to a passage I really liked but don't it didn't make it into the show and I can't recall seeing many people mention it anywhere over the years

    From Clash of Kings
Qhorin Halfhand sat with his back to a rock, honing the edge of his longsword with long slow strokes. Jon watched the ranger for a few moments, then summoned his courage and went to him. "My lord," he said, "you never asked me how it went. With the girl."

"I am no lord, Jon Snow." Qhorin slid the stone smoothly along hte steel with his two-fingered hand.

"She told me Mance would take me, if I ran with her."

    "She told you true."

"She even claimed we were kin. She told me a story ...."

"...of Bael the Bard and the rose of Winterfell. So Stonesnake told me. It happens I know the song. Mance would sign it of old, when he came back from a ranging. He had a passion for wildling music. Aye, and for their women as well."

    "You knew him?"

"We all knew him." His voice was sad.

They were friends as well as brothers, Jon realized, and now they are sworn foes. "Why did he desert?"

"For a wench, some say. For a crown, others would have it." Qhorin tested the edge of his sword with the ball of his thumb. "He liked women, Mance did, and he was not a man whose knees bent easily, that's true. But it was more than that. He loved the wild better than the Wall. It was in his blood." ....

    "Was he a good ranger?"

"He was the best of us," said the Halfhand, "and the worst as well. Only fools like Thoren Smallwood despise the wildlings. They are as brave as we are, Jon. As strong, as quick, as clever. But they have no discipline. They name themselves the free folk, and each one thinks himself as good as a king and wiser than a maester. Mance was the same. He never learned how to obey.

"No more than me," said Jon quietly.

Qhorin's shrewd grey eyes seemed to see right through him. "So you let her go?" He did not sound the least surprised.

    "You know?"

"Now. Tell me why you spared her."

It was hard to put into words. "My father never used a headsman. He said he owed it to men he killed to look into their eyes and hear their last words. And when I looked into Ygritte's eyes, I . . . " Jon stared down at his hands helplessly. "I know she was an enemy, but there was no evil in her."

"No more than in the other two."

"It was their lives or ours," Jon said. "If they had seen us, if they had sounded that horn . . . "

"The wildlings would hunt us down and slay us, true enough."

"Stonesnake has the horn now, though, and we took Ygritte's knife and axe. She's behind us, afoot, unarmed. . ."

"And not like to be a threat," Qhorin agreed. "If I had needed her dead, I would have left her with Ebben, or done the thing myself."

"Then why did you command it of me?"

"I did not command it. I told you to do what needed to be done ,and left you to decide what that would be." Qhorin stood and slid his longsword back into its scabbard. "When I want a mountain scaled, I call on Stonesnake. Should I need to put an arrow through the eye of some foe across a windy battlefield, I summon Squire Dalbridge. Ebben can make any man give up his secrets. To lead men you must know them, Jon Snow. I know more of you now than I did this morning."

"And if I had slain her?" asked Jon.

"She would be dead, and I would know you better than I had before."

It's not like, super significant in the grand scheme of the series, but I really liked it for most of the Watch's impression of wildlings, and is probably a lesson Show-Jon could have used by now.

Instead the show turned that into (at 4:00)

Yeah the whole thing with Ygritte is one of the most major changes that I absolutely hate but I otherwise enjoyed Jon's shit during that season so whatever.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I feel like that entire Twitter take is based on confounding the book Dany with the show Dany. He's projecting characterization from the books onto the show.

I think the show is now trying to convey what the books had been, but in a short amount of time because the showrunners were given how the story ends and this have to shoe-horn it in

It's going to look even weirder when they try to CGI it off in the series finale.

Dany [in a Riggs voice]: I don't make things difficult. That's how they get, all by themselves.

Jon: [in a Murtaugh voice] I'm too old for this shit.

    Dany: I'm your aunt.

I really don't get it. This season so very obviously totally rushed.
Were Weiss & Benioff so extremely overconfident, or do they just want to get it over with?

The age-old question of whether they actually thought this was good, or they just want to get it over before they destroy their reputations.

I’ve always felt like there’s been a lot of over analysis of this, and I kind of just went with Occam’s Razor on it: they clearly improved their resumes by running this incredibly successful show, they don’t want to be obligated to it anymore so they can get more lucrative deals and make more money for themselves, but they also don’t want to take a hit to their professional reputation by bailing on the final seasons of the show just to make more money on a different project, so they’re trying to rush it to get it done as fast as possible so they can be done with that and go somewhere else to make more money.

In retrospect, yeah, it probably would’ve been better for them to just admit they really don’t want to make the show anymore and would rather go make money doing something else, since basically the cast and producers of almost every other TV show that runs for more than five years don’t have a problem saying this, but it is what it is.

The crew should win all sorts of awards for pulling the writers’ nonsense together.

I think the cast is all ready to do new stuff.

Though feeling bad for both Sophie and Maisie for being in X-men jail seems appropriate.

The Night's King definitely came up first in the books, Brandon Stark heard tales of it from (the nanny? Whoever told them all the stories growing up). A former night's watchmen, and almost definitely a former Stark

The Night's King of the books was a human Watchman in the Age of Heroes who married a female Other, ruled as a human sacrificing tyrant for a few years, and was put down by a Stark-Wildling alliance. None of the stories describe him being or becoming an Other

The Night King of the show was a man in the much more distant pre-Wall, pre-Watch time period of the Dawn Age before becoming a White Walker

The time periods and general descriptions of the two don't line up in any way that makes me think they didn't just take a name they thought was cool and a general association with the Others/Walkers

how would you...marry an Other. Aren't they just...evil undead frost people who kill indiscriminately? Can they...get married?!?!?!?!?

Others in the book are basically fae creatures that live beyond civilization and are beautiful yet terrifying. They're the fairies and elves from European folktales back when fairies and elves were used to scare kids into doing as they're told.

  • HobnailHobnail Registered User regular
It is a very old story and may be metaphor and/or euphemism, like "fell in love and married an Other" might be like "crazy dark evil demon worshipping shit"

I mean with Euron it's really hard to tell who to roll your eyes at the most. Obv garbo writing, but how much of the cartoonish performance is due to the actor, how much because of direction?

The same actor has done some great performances before. I'm pretty sure the writing is to blame here. He certainly brings a powerful physicality to the role. Remember when he wrecked the Sand Snakes? I don't like the character but he was very plausibly tearing them to pieces in that action scene.

  • el_vicioel_vicio Registered User regular

I don't remember the Sand Snakes scene, but that's mostly because I try to forget about the Sand Snakes

I mean there is no way anyone was gonna play that character and not have them come across as a cartoonish shitbird

His entire role in the story is "be depraved, want to fuck Cersei" and that's it

He has had multiple episodes in which his primary bits of dialogue are essentially GONNA FUCK ME A QUEEN

The performance isn't great but I don't blame him for that at all, he has to work with what they gave him

I just remember it being nice that someone was like "We're not just here to help you rape the queen" and his reply was "Whoa whoa whoa, I don't want to rape anyone, I want to have sex with the queen"

In hindsight it's damning commentary on the show that that's what passes for charming
