I did some money saving things at work, we had some products that had 3rd party services and when they were built never had an API to cancel the service.
In the last year I cancelled enough stuff in licenses to save $450,000 US....a month...i wish i got some of that pie
This is also over the course of about 10 years for some these products...it was quite the rabbit hole to discover all the waste

I know this is silly but like.. if you can move there's a ton of retail work up here for decent pay. Unemployment here is like 2% and good help that sticks around is hard to find.
Person who would be responsible for bumping my pay just off handedly mentioned on his way out the door that he would be gone until our office move in August.
Hey "timspork's ghost", if you are still looking for a good backpack, I'd recommend the one I've had for a few years (and that Scott Kurtz once told me was very attractive at the San Antonio airport).
"This bag can used as duffle/handbag/suitcase/brief case when travelling. Two durable straps are in a hidden compartment to make this bag a backpack/rucksack/satchel. A detachable shoulder strap can easily turn the backpack into a messenger bag/crossbody bag/mail bag/shoulder bag. One bag offers at least three different ways of carrying. "
I added this bag to my wishlist after seeing this post. Today I got a notification it was a lighting deal for $26 so I went ahead and jumped on it.
this post sent me down a rabbithole, and now i'm looking at a backpack that's a hundred and twenty five smackaroos, and just came out a month ago, so looks like that'll be the price for awhile yet. but dang it looks handy and pretty. maybe i'll spend birthday money on it, but this ikea bag also looks pretty cute...
Our new Prime Minister has been talking about reforming Industrial Relations laws, and that he should remove more power from the already neutered unions.
The 'Fair Work' Commission already ruled to cut penalty rates to retail employees, from double time on Sunday to time and a half on that day to match Saturday.
Should have gone to 1.75 on both days, at least if you wanted to standardise things.
And the Commission just needs to only take the union's submission into consideration, not actually base the agreement off negotiations with them.
Basically, I only see unions being worth a damn (before the next election in the years) if unions start organising illegal strikes.

So while setting up my new work computer I found there is a Firefox extension that automatically searches your public library when you are looking at a webpage with a book on it and tells you if it is checked in and then takes you to the catalog entry at the library if you click on it.
It seems very useful for someone like me. Sadly it does not seem to work when I'm on my school library catalog. That would be super nice.
*edit* It is only specific sites like Amazon and book stores, but still neat.

I might even have time to burn off my backyard then.

That sounds awesome! What is the extension's name?
If it is an open source project, maybe you can talk to the developer about adding that functionality.

I waste an incredible amount of money at work and if it came out of my paycheck I'd be homeless.
Why?
Sterile equipment that's opened and never used. Stuff that has been in an isolation room. Expired equipment that is still perfectly good. Medication that has been prepared then canceled. Waste medication since you can't use the same vial on different patients. Thousands of dollars worth of stuff.

I also work in the healthcare industry in the US, and the waste is horrifying
Today I need to write a bunch of stuff. I require silence or ambient white noise to write anything that requires any thought, talking/music distract me completely. I also didn't bring my laptop in today, which was dumb.
I've been at work two hours and so far the lab has been home to
- an extremely loud multi-person conversation about a colossal fuckup in a Title IX complaint (fair, but very loud and very long)
- my phd student's computer blaring music unstoppably while she was out of the lab for an hour (it wouldn't let me turn the sound down or stop the playlist because she had facial recognition turned on and we couldn't fool it). Not her fault, but I came very close to unplugging the damn thing
- my colleague is now using a butter knife to scrape month-old hardened dirt out of some acrylic containers. Why he is choosing to do this at his desk and not in the empty workshop I do not know. As a bonus, the sound has a nails-on-chalkboard quality that is making my toes curl.

Oh I woulda killed the PhD students comp immediately, unless it was playing like non stop gold. Don't leave a comp in a status thus that it can start producing unstoppable sound. Mute your shit.

It is but it's also for the safety of the patient too.
Sure we could reuse a lot of this stuff, but someone will cut corners and pass on a communicable disease if we do. They used to autoclave surgical equipment for instance. But there does exist things that survive autoclaving.
Not only that, things like prions will survive autoclaving.

Greetings Job Thread,
After a couple of years being out of the workforce my wife is attempting to get back into her previous occupation (Medical Laboratory Tech) by attending a job fair for a new medical facility nearing completion not too far away from where we live. She has not applied to/interviewed for a new job for over ten years (since starting her previous job) so the kids and myself are doing all that we can encouraging and supporting her and keeping the anxiousness and butterflies away as much as possible.
She knows that there are other opportunities that exist beyond where she is applying to and it's not the end of the world if today ends up not going well but we are doing what we can putting our best foot forward on this (pre-applied to the positions online, got an interview outfit ready to go for the fair, teen kids helping out with the toddler kid today, etc.) and gain some confidence beyond just today.
I cannot remember what we are using for a good luck mascot in this thread but that and some positive vibes are appreciated

Update: The recruiter still hasn’t contacted me to set up an interview with the managers for the tech contract. I emailed him and left a voicemail Monday. However, I found someone who worked there and...they didn’t have kind words for the place. Granted, they weren’t in the job I’d be applying for, but still.
Also I have another interview with another recruiter tomorrow for a clerical/accounting gig. The recruiter seemed actually excited about my resume, so here’s hoping she’s not just a good actor.
Also also it looks like Tiffany Cabán might actually clinch the primary for DA in Queens. This isn’t the thread for that info maybe, but holy moly it’s good news and I like it.

Is there a way to virtually flip a table? Because I want to virtually flip a table.
Customer: I'm having errors generating these expense reports and it's causing major workstoppage issues and this needs to be fixed!!! aglblblblblblbbl
Me: Totally understand, however your ticket didn't include any screenshots nor a description of what the nature of the errors you're encountering, can we arrange a call and webex for you to show me this information?
*cue multiple back and forth ticket communications scheduling the session*
*Have Session, can't replicate the errors she's describing*
Me: Ok no worries, I can understand these issues manifest sporadically depending on what you're doing. When this happens again, PLEASE make a note of the exact time, down to the second if possible of when the error occurred and what you were doing when this happened so I can parse error logs and research this for you. Without this data, I can't troubleshoot this issue further for you.

Customer: I'm now having another problem with attendees and it's causing workstoppages aallglgllggFIXITFIXITFIXITFIXIT!
Me: No worries, I'll be glad to help. What was the error message? Also you just said "involving attendees". What were you trying to do with attendees? Do you have a timestamp?
Her Department jumps in on the ticket chain: Hey Customer is having major problems with her expense reports and it's causing major backlogs with her work, why isn't this fixed yet??!?!
Me: *eye twitching* Totally understand, but I need more information in order to troubleshoot this issue for her. (Repost previous requests to customer for screenshots/examples of the error/timestamps etc)
Her Department: Well we just tried together and it worked for a while but now it errored out again, we need this escalated to a technical person who understands what is going on, when can this be done!?!?
