That is one part that is not nearly as good the dub

    if Okuyasu doesn't sound like a 65 year-old smoker, what's the point??

Ok Sex Pistols might be one of my favorite stands in the series.

(For those wondering the dub changes it to Six Bullets which is nowhere near as good a name)

I think my actual least favorite name change is Green Day --> Green Tea.

It's not a decent re-imagining like Aerosmith --> Li'l Bomber, and it's not even amusingly terrible, like Spicy Lady or Flaccid Pancake.

I do find it curious how earlier parts didn't really seem to care about changing names to avoid direct references. You still have names like Robert E.O. Speedwagon and all the pillar men.

It's only when you get to part 4 that I noticed them starting to do it. I wonder if something happened that made them change the localization process.

The best English name change in JoJo is changing Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap to Atrocious Acts At Affordable Prices

They did kinda do that with the Pillar Men.

Ya, but those are also the names in the japanese version. It's not like they changed them for the western dub. edit: talking about the pillar men names.

I'm wondering if some music group got wind of JoJo using their names and sent some lawyers to have a chat with David Productions and so they started changing them in the future to avoid dealing with that.

I think you are mixing up it a bit. The pillarman names are generally just the Japanese pronunciation of the western band name.

I think most fan subs I've seen have had them as Santanna, AC DC, Wham, and Cars. Definitly on the Santanna thing; the name change is pretty substantial there.

As for legal trouble? The thing I've heard is that when a Part 5 game was being developed for the PS2, the estate of Prince got wind of the fact that Giorno's Stand is named after Prince's album Gold Experience, and raised hell about it. And thereafter, the localizers have been playing it safe with the references, just to prevent any further potential trouble.

Except, that might not be entirely the case, as they were playing it safe in the Part 3 arcade fighter 4 years prior.

They play it ridiculously safe. Even with like, common words and idioms they will change shit. And even with the band is really cool about the name co-opting (See: King Crimson)

I think the main thing with the names is that for the most part they're probably in the clear, but there's so *many* references that if enough bands pursued legal action they wouldn't have to he resources to defend themselves

I do wish if the bands were cool with it that they could use the real name

Obviously that doesn’t matter because of legal bullshit but King Crimson is objectively cooler than Emperor Crimson

I wonder if “Lord Crimson” would work better.

Also, now that I think about it, “Emperor Crimson” makes it kind of overlap with The Emperor.

I think it's this pretty much. I doubt the localizers are afraid of any one particular musician suing over something like this. Who has the time or patience to do that? But it's just the sheer density of names means that they're better playing safe then sorry.

I bet marketing and promotion plays some part in it. You can probably get away with using these names in story, but in the off chance that you want to release an action figure with [musician name] name on the package? Or give an official product descriptions or back of the cover blurbs that have something like "can our heroes hope to defeat [band name] and his stand [song name]?" than you run in danger of raising some eyebrows.

the closest example i know of with this is, They Might Be Giants have a song called Nyquil Driver, where they say the phrase "Nyquil driver" a lot in the lyrics, and that's fine, but they're not allowed to print the trademarked name "Nyquil" on any promotional material, including the back of the album packaging, so the "official" name of the song according to the album tracklist is AKA Driver

Rewatching DIU as bedtime viewing when I can’t sleep. It’s weird how despite all its violence and murder that it’s very comforting for me.

There’s so many little things I think DIU does really well:

    - I love how Josuke and Okuyasu pop up in the background of other characters’ arcs, and how from those appearances and small snippets of dialogue you really get the sense that they’re BFF. I still don’t understand why you have so much focus on Jotaro/Kakyoin as the friendship duo of the series when Josuke and Okuyasu are right there.

    Kakyoin is hotter.

Pucci passes Sunshine laws everywhere so now it's "New Hampshire man and Cumbria man and Palatinate man catch fire after lighting farts" and it's up to Emporio to get them repealed before humanity understands how really dumb it is.

So continuing part 5 and just watched the clash and talking heads episodes.

How on earth does anybody in this show still see weird stuff going on or people acting odd and not immediately go "oh ya that's probably because of an enemy stand."?

    I mean
Narancia is pretty clearing freaking out every time he says something and acting surprised at what he's saying and almost everybody is just like "yup that checks out let's not worry about that and instead think he's imagining things".

Also the new op is a pretty large step down from Fighting Gold.

It's even worse in the manga
Narancia has like an entire page where he keeps yelling shit like "2+2=3" and "the sky is purple" to try to get them to understand that he can't tell the truth, and they're all just like "why're you being a weirdo"

To be slightly fair, Narancia is canonically a weirdo idiot that does weirdo idiot things. So it makes a little more sense. Still yeah it's silly.

I do like the part with Notorious B.I.G.
