Thats way better than I would have expected that combination to be.
And I never thought Castlevania in 3D could look fun, but that does. Wonder why the main games never figured that out. Granted I haven't played all the 3D ones but any I saw just didn't look entertaining.
While they certainly could've done better, I'm not sure an FPS where you barely jump or whip anything in combat was top of Japanese dev's minds either.

Lament of Innocence and Lords of SHadow weren't bad for what they were, but the most Castlevania games I've played thus far are not Castlevania games. Like, I'm thinking of Darksiders II and Dark Souls, which both have heavy elements of Castlevania style play and visual, including a horror aesthetic, either comic inspired or "realistic".

Lords of Shadow is most excellent. The sequels are hot garbage, though.
Lords of Shadow was fine, Mirror of Fate was mostly bog-standard Metroidvania with a fun "hop around the story" feature of the multiple characters, and Lords of Shadow 2 felt meandering and commonly mean-spirited towards the player.

Lament of Innocence was really fun to play as the boss with the spinning magic swords. They gave Alucard those swords in the anime because they are pretty cool.
Curse of Darkness was also pretty fun if you instantly skip any dialogue before you hear the voice actors. Immensely grateful they changed the characters of Issac and St. Germain from their original forms. St. Germain is such a clownboat. Really interesting what they did for him in the boss fight but very annoying. Haven't you wanted to kill Dracula with an Electric Guitar?

I really like Curse of Darkness, like as in it's unironically one of my favorite Castlevania games ever. And I definitely see its flaws, like lame room design, that sorta shit. But it's still fun and it has some pretty goddamn great music. St Germain's change in the anime was lateral imo, neither better nor worse. How he was in the game, they were clearly trying to add another piece to the puzzle of "we have long-term ideas for Castlevania" along with the Aria of Sorrow hints about the war in 2000, etc. No idea WHAT it was supposed to mean, but whatevs!
As for Issac, definitely his best version in the anime. In the game, his Japanese voice actor is amazing. But the English one, yikes. Blew it on the laugh big time.

I started playing Touhou Luna Nights which seems like a fun little Metroidvania. I have no idea what's going on with the story; I am unfamiliar with the franchise and don't know any of these characters, and it felt like they just jumped into the story assuming you know everyone. Not that it matters.
All I know is that I'm playing as an anime maid lady and shooting daggers at everything and can stop or slow down time. I also got a chainsaw as a special weapon.

There have been a number of Touhou Metroidvanias, but the one really amazing one is unfortunately by a now defunct group, so I'm not sure how to (legally) track down a copy of either it or the sequel.
Technically more a classic Castlevania (individual stages), but it was damn gorgeous and I lament Aja's collapse. They were just about 5 years ahead of their time. Just a couple years too early for Steam to launch them into greatness. They even sprung for it to be officially translated into other languages... which did backfire a little because some of the work was... less than stellar.

I didn't know there were Touhou games in the vein of Metroidvania. Consider me intrigued.

Name a genre or even a specific top-shelf retro game, and I guarantee you some doujin group has made a Touhou version of it. Reimu would fit right in in Smash because she's already in some flimsy impersonation of half the games it represents.

The weirdest yet also coolest is Touhou Captain Tsubasa.
Not the least reason of which is because the doujin group made it in like 2005, did an expansion pack in 2006, and then remade it from the ground up in like 2014. The Touhou fandom is weird.
The bit that always catches me off guard is that fan games are fully allowed to just get released for money. ZUN is very easygoing about that in a way I don’t think I’ve seen elsewhere.
Like, there are fewer official games that I can buy for money than fan games.

Japan's relationship to copyright law is incomprehensible.
The culture is an close to reverence for authors, their word is law, and you must obey their wishes at all times.
But also, here's Comiket, where we rented out an entire stadium as a monument dedicated to copyright infringing works being sold. An entire hall is set aside specifically for pornographic copyright infringement.

I think it's because there's also a cultural acceptance of doujinshi. And yeah, those are contradictory, but not irreconcilably so.

It helps that a lot of professionals created doujinshi before they turned pro.

Just got the CotM2 platinum. I was a little worried about getting through the final stage with just one character for the "Luna Secare" ending, but with Ultimate Zangetsu it wasn't too bad.

Apparently it's actually been out for three years, but I missed out on it until now. It's available here and only requires GZDoom to play.

I should go back and restart/ finish it. Game had a great look and an interesting story.
I believe they even added an expansion.
