I absolutely hated Spec Ops due to awful gameplay. Also it's a linear game, not something I am really into. And, yes, I did see all the dark bits via streamers and youtube.
Half the point was the ludonarrative dissonance. Just watching it doesn't convey the message anywhere near as well.
For whatever reason I had such a rough time with the friendly AI that when it got to a certain scene I got pissed off but for a very different reason than what the game wanted from me ...
When the civs killed one of my "friendlies" I was far more angry that I wasn't the one that got to end his existence
The entire narrative of Spec Ops fell flat to me. It didn't make sense, they railroad you into situations you're supposed to be shocked about but fuck these people etc etc etc. And pretty sure in the end
they want you to shoot up the troops that find you if the weird slow motion is any indication, but at least that one wasn't forced on you.
Stuff like Firewatch does that thing much better (though that has some issues too).

I mean, I seem to remember there are, like, 4 endings?
Shoot yourself, shoot at the soldiers but die, shoot at the soldiers but live, surrender.
None of the endings are exactly positive, but I felt like that was the point of the game.

Why have more not done WWI [yes I know Battlefield]? Closer to Steampunk, trenches, balloons, biplanes, really gigantic guns, gas masks, even proto-Battleships!
Tangent: didn't some old History Channel show use Total War to reconstruct historic battles? They should do WWI like that to show how close the Germans were to actually winning in the first ~8 months.

Back when I bought Battlefield 1942 (2 years post-release), I had a blast with a mod that converted it to WWI called BF1918. They had trenches and everything, although it was rare that everyone stayed in them. They made the guns a lot more lethal, though. One shot from a rifle would usually kill anyone. Also, I just looked it up and it appears the mod team was still updating it as of 2017, and the comments seem to indicate that there are still people playing it. Cool. Weird that it says "released in 2011" though. I was definitely playing it in 2004.

Gonna say it's probably because "morally gray" doesn't sell as well as a clear delineation between good and evil. Most players like to feel like they're the good guy beating up the bad guy, rather than "hey... this whole situation is kinda fucked up, how did this happen".

Ostensibly yes, but considering how Nazis seem to be making a resurgence I can't help but wonder if that's the "reason" anymore.
Oh fuck yes. I always wanted to play this, had multiple sets of it that I always picked up at my local thrift shops, but between the setup and the lack of others who wanted to play...

Me and a friend used to play this all the time. We had to invent house rules to prevent Karelia being the lynchpin to victory.
If that allows for variants or custom games, I will be incredibly down for it. If it's just the base game though, well, I burned out on that decades ago.
Dove into Subnautica, having a splashing good time! However, I can't seem to find a cave with the damn sulfur! It's been my bane so far!
"Cave sulfur" is what's left behind in the flower-pods that those #%^(ing crashfish come out of.
I don't think I know what crashfish are. Maybe I've seen them, but I can't be sure. I only know the names of fish I've caught, and scanned, and none were crashfish.
You almost certainly know them.
They're the assholes that go REEEEEEEE and explode at you when you're trying to explore caves.
Ok, I've seen them now. I think previously, I may have heard them but not seen them. I've definitely been hit in a cave before.
i mentioned this in chat earlier but I've been on a kick with the arkham horror card game lately and wanted to know if there's any vidya games that catch that same kind of vibe. I was made aware of the sinking city when i asked and now i'm immediately and painfully waiting for that to come out in a year. what are your top picks for anything in that atmospheric narrative horror, possible eldritch abominations, maybe investigating spookies, maybe killing monsters? I saw there was an official call of cthullu game that recently came out. is that any good? the only gameplay trailer on the store page seemed unhelpful

SPEC OPS may be the most over-rated videogame ever. My goodness was that thing terrible. Only other game that is close is BIOSHOCK INFINITY, how the heck did the SYSTEM SHOCK series ever descend to that level of awfulness ?
Not that its saying anything new to this thread, but chat will take any reason to gift.... @destroyah87 Thank you monster! It may be appalling but its mine and you can't make me improve it!
I'm rolling 200 deep with several other lords rolling 170 to 200 deep
The bed news that we have encountered 2 parties of desert bandits.
One 800 deep and the other 200 deep
Do to us just Getting out of a fight with something on par with 400 desert bandits, I think this fight will be just my named characters getting knocked out and then throwing troops at the enemy until they die
I would like a SP WWI game with any of the fronts that weren't the western front between late 1914 and spring 1918.
Apparently Tannenberg covers the Eastern Front (and even includes kit changes as the war progresses [i.e. metal helmets, French stop wearing Blue+Red, etc]). However, it's listed as an MMO.
It was part of the previous Humble Monthly.
I haven't tried it

I haven't tried it either, but it looks less like an MMO and more of a large-scale multiplayer game with support for 64 players.
There's a Twitch clip of BaroTrauma posted above. I guess from the video, the game kinda seems like spooky underwater Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, but also there's either bad voice acting in the game or all the streamers in the party are all shouting at the same time.

You can have something like 10+ people in one game so there's been a few instances of several streamers grouping up and as you can imagine screaming like idiots to play it up for the audience.

But when it tried to make me, the player, complicit in these characters' actions that's where it fell flat.
Yeah, I didn't actually feel like it was my tragedy, I felt like it was his tragedy that I was helping to tell.

But yeah, the gameplay was not great
