Any sufficiently advanced [tech] thread is indistinguishable from a magic thread
half a year or maybe a full year, but then the chip things rolled out and were required and I guess the ones that worked with the tap on cards were too expensive or something.
Some are starting to support apple pay around here now so that's cool.
Is that a new chip thing or is it the ones we've had in Denmark for 15 years? And when contactless was introduced here cards just had both.
Paying just by slapping my wallet on the scanner is convenient!
Yeah it's the thing you guys have had forever.
the NFC thing we used to have before the chips, but for some reason they reverted everything to be chip only and almost everyone dropped the nfc cards and readers and I was really sad about that.

Because were bad at adapting technology and it was really easy to steal info from NFC cards. Its harder now, but still possible. But you can get a wallet/purse that blocks the signal out.
and of course when we do try to push the tech forward we do something incredibly stupid like going to mandated chipped cards without mandating pins for them

Nfc is better than chips because I have to do less.
But I'm now a monster who pays for everything with my watch and act like a three year old asking friends for cash when they don't have card cause I never have cash any more.
I got a NFC + chip card and then like six months later got sent a new card with just the chip, I dunno if there was a security issue with my bank or what, it was weird.
I got into an argument with my friend because he truly believes for some reason that switching to fiber internet, which costs the exact same as his current Comcast internet, wouldn't be a benefit to him at all. I told him he was dumb.
I assume the people who made all the card readers were going to charge money for the new ones and the companies didn't like that. Plus old people couldn't figure out how the magic worked.
it took a literal act of congress to get debit cards on the chip system. NFC never had a chance in the US
they made it a law where if you didn't adopt chip, you became liable for all damages pertaining to card fraud traced back to your business, instead of the banks and card providers
so that's why one out of every 5 rural gas stations in Florida has a cash window now!

The fiber in my area costs a quarter as much other other non-fiber ISPs. When it was newly available I asked a neighbor if they were switching and they said no.

I don't think that's law, it's just a policy change by Visa and MC.
The original version of NFC cards died out here because they just stored your card #, CVV, and Exp date without any encryption. Anyone with an RFID reader and a $5 cantenna could get your number from ~30 feet away.

I actually could use advice on gigabit speed wifi routers for an apartment if anyone's done that recently. Fortunately the router will be centrally located now with a max radius of about 20' and never more than one wall in any direction.
i would probably just get a pretty cheap 802.11ac tp link if i was looking for general coverage of a smallish area. bigger than that and i'm a big unifi proponent, but that's a bit fiddly for some people. at which point i'd get that netgear orbis or whatever it's called.
that router looks like it'd belong in doom with the words demonic invasion in progress written underneath it. it's also a preposterous amount of money for a single wifi router!
edit: ah you posted while i did, something like this is probably the best bang for the buck for covering a small space like an apartment.

I recently bought a TP-Link Archer C1200. I can't actually test the wifi speed properly, because my only 5ghz device is my Nintendo Switch, but the reviews I found said it's basically the best cheap router.
There's a niche article published by a group of C++ code reviewers who dug into the software system that powers Samsung smart TVs and their conclusion was... pretty rough. It's a pretty tough read just because it's about code... but the size of the article and bearing in mind their normal project critique is ONE BLOG POST and this one had no less than four long posts.... you might get a grasp on just how badly this thing was put together https://www.viva64.com/en/b/0519/
Is there an easy way to change the behavior of the volume buttons on my Pixel 3a?
When I mess with buttons outside of an app, I want to turn down the ringer volume
It doesn't do that
Is there a way to change it so it does?
That is locked to the version of Android you are using. It just recently changed to media default instead of ringtone default. I think you can't change it.

The best you've got is a button above the volume slider that pops up that allows you to silence or set it to vibrate
It is taking me a large amount of willpower to stop myself from buying this monitor
49", 5120x1440, 120Hz refresh rate.....
What's helping fend off the urge is I need to finish cleaning out what I'm using as a storage room and buy a desk for the space then I can put the monitor on it!

Surely for $1300 you could just get like a 60+ inch 4K tv? Manufacturers have to be clearing out stock of curved tvs on steep discount now that everyone has realised for loungeroom viewing distances curving the screen is a fucking waste of time?

I was against curved monitors initially, but in this case I think it's fine. For both productivity and gaming purposes the seamless dual-27" monitors stuck together would be a big improvement over the side-by-side 24" monitors I use now (that don't have DisplayPort inputs so they kinda suck). A replacement TV would be very difficult to find in a similar size, with the same refresh rate, same input latency, etc.
It's an enthusiast purchase for sure, but it just looks really dang nice.

Also with a normal shaped tv you would be craning your neck to see the top of the screen. Ultra wide screen is ergonomically better when you're that close to a screen.

Ah see I presumed godmode was looking at the ultrasupermegawide monitor to get somewhat of a vision-filling picture thing going on to help make games more immersive.
A more common use I imagine will be playing a game "fullscreen" in a 27" diagonal portion of the screen and have other stuff open to the side, like I do now with my dual monitors. I don't quite think a 2080 will hold up to 5k gaming and still look good.

I now need a new router because our 100Mbps-limited old one can't handle it.
Edit: I'm thinking this guy:
but I'm worried about Sauron tracking my internet activity, can anyone advise?
