whirza is a better deck and has far more placements

also mystic forge is a very dumb card

  • I needed a gnome to post.I needed a gnome to post. like fire Registered User regular
whirza has more placements because the paradoxical outcome deck uses wishing well and emry as part of its gameplan, which were not legal in whirza for most of its time

as soon as you look at the period of time in which whirza and outcome are legal at the same time there is a clear trend of migration to the outcome build

Emry gives the deck an infinite engine, costs net zero mana with Mox Amber, and is pretty close to "draw 4 next turn" for the deck. That's a bonkers amount of advantage compared to Whirza.

After a lot of games Im coming to the conclusion that Wildborn Preserver might actually be terrible in Flash. The card often feels like it works against the rest of the deck.

Oh ok I didn't realize the deck had started playing outcome. I hope not. Id really like a shot at playing that deck.

Actually I feel the same way about Golos. I hope everything ends up working out.

Teferi ban is the dream that absolutely won't happen. But one can dream. Or they announce teferi alt arts and voice packs based on Lance Reddick and Idris Elba, in which case I'll play esper too.

There are a lot of shells for him, but I really don't see the deck being good without Field. Maybe the bant one that relies on the giant sweeper can legitimately stay and go over the top, but most Golos decks seem pretty reliant on Field atm.

Yeah, honestly, I feel like the deck could do perfectly well without Golos, in fact I've ran into variants that don't even run him, but FotD is too important.

Closest comparison is to Rogue Refiner which was banned (eventually). Reef is stronger in the right deck, but without Field that deck is probably just getting value instead of creating an army.

  • milskimilski UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ Registered User regular
Rogue Refiner was banned because energy shells were too strong and it did too much "for free" even if interacted with. Risen Reef is an engine that does less if interacted with but allows an archetype to exist. They're very different cards.

I think being able to search up two gates is just too good. I hate banning ramp, because ramp is a blast, and gates decks are fun, but being able to A: Get two different namedlands and B: get easier access to 5 colors of mana for golos is a real problem.

But also Teferi is just a monster.

Again, I only play Bo1 constructed, because of time constraints (i play during work hours),but I would shed zero tears if teferi or route were banned in Bo1.

Risen Reef is, at the end of the day, a 3 mana 1/1. It's not as good as Tireless Tracker, which was never banned.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply I thought Reef was going anywhere, just drawing the closest comparison I could find. I blame morning-brain and posting via mobile.

Not on Standard, but it surprises me that they printed Field of Ruin without putting Ghost Quarter or something on the format.

FotD isn't an obviously powerful card:
    1. It doesn't do anything unless you control seven different lands.
    2. It only makes one 2/2 unless you have multiple Fields and/or drop multiple lands per turn.
It just turned out those conditions were fairly trivial in this standard environment.

Here's what Melissa DeTora wrote about it for M-Files:
When designing cards, we often look at what's in real-world Standard and not seeing any play. One of the cards that met that criteria was M19's Scapeshift. Scapeshift has succeeded in the past mostly in part because there was a land you could search up (Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle) that gives you a large amount of ETB triggers and likely wins you the game. A card like that did not exist in Standard, so we decided to make one in M20. Field of the Dead gives you a fun deck-building quest to go on without Scapeshift and, with Scapeshift, gives you a large amount of Zombies and likely wins you the game—or at least giving you an incredible advantage. There's even a fun deck to be built with other M20 cards that search up lands, like Golos and Elvish Reclaimer!
    So much fun!

My guess is they missed Golos Field and wanted one period where all the sweet utility lands they printed in Eldraine can play without something eating them before they print Ghost Quarter/Field of Ruin/Blood Moon in Theros.

I think the decision to make so many utility lands in Eldraine definitely fucked with how good FotD actually is. They're very obviously one of those things where they were like "let's let players use this before we put safety valves in later" that they love to do with sets. There's genuinely zero interaction with anything the Golos decks do, which is bonkers when you consider how many answers this format actually has to various threats with pushed bullshit like "hero's downfall that draws you a dude". There's so many haste creatures in this format! Because they thought a creature would need haste to survive with all these answers! But they didn't put in answers for the entirety of the format.

What I wonder is if Eldraine was originally going to push some pretty strong aggro decks that would've made the hyper-greedy Golos decks a lot less consistent and pushed things back to a standard Aggro/Midrange/Control format, with Golos on the fringe to punish greed, but the aggro-pushed cards got tuned down late in the development cycle.

I keep saying that they "missed Golos Field" but they clearly didn't miss the interaction, they just didn't foresee how dominant it would be, which suggests there was a different dynamic in the format that Play Design was working on.

I mean, even with Aggro decks the first thing a Golos does is drop a 0/3 wall

And there are a buttload of cheap boardwipes in this format too.

Tbf to the FotD critics such as myself, when it was first spoiled people who were hype on it thought it easily slotted into existing control decks, which it absolutely didn't. It just happened that there was a solid enough shell for Field to perform well in anyway.

So those fun announcements from the Twitch stream, one is pretty cool and the other, well...

    First up: Unsanctioned
    Release date: Feb 29, 2020
What is it: A silver-bordered precon set of five 30-card decks that can be mashed together to make different decks to play against one another. The set will feature 16 brand new "un" cards and reprints of cards from previous "un" sets. You will also get 10 new, full-art black bordered basic lands per set, 5 regular and 5 foil, and some other little goodies (dice, storage box, tokens.)

    Second: MYSTERY BOOSTER
Release date: November 8 @ MagicFest Richmond
    What is it: TBD

That's it, that's all the info they gave for the mystery booster other than a picture of the packaging that says "Mystery Booster: Convention Edition."

Well at least richmond is getting something. Im going to OKC in december because it is closer and it sure as fuck isnt going to get anything cool. Even the artists are kind of meh, most of them havent even put out a card in a few years. I guess getting a serra angel and prodigal sorcerer signed is cool. Also it is comical that the tourny pot for all the rest of the magicfests for the rest of the year are $50000 but OKC is only $35000. Ill probably just draft all weekend.

Kinda sucks pax south always gets fucked compared to east and west as well.
