Last day of parental leave tomorrow after three and half months off with my son.

Can't believe how quickly it's gone, my first shift back at work will be horrific. My wife is now off for another month before everything comes to an end an he starts nursery.

Picture of him at the beginning of my leave and now:

Probably gonna cry on my way to work ha.

We've been talking about the animals that didn't run fast enough to get away from the fires.
And how the fire got started because everything was too hot and dry and there was a spark, as an example, from a thunderstorm, and since it was all hot and dry, a fire started and went way too fast to be controlled.

But shes' been asking about the Helpers that are there, and what we can do to help, and asking about the animals that did run fast enough to escape the fire.

At almost 4, It's probably the beast that I could ask.

it gets a bit harder when we get to "the animals that didn't run fast enough all died. Just like Shadow died, right mommy?"

Shadow being our cat that we lost last Sept to leukemia.

It's a bit easier because we're not in Australia and we only really had to deal with one afternoon of Orange sky.

But today's afternoon play was running around with balloons and putting out the fires.

I appreciate that whoever set up the local ECFE webpage had the good sense to have some fun with the default account avatars. I did not choose these; it's just how they appeared.

It's been a few days, and I still can't work out what the first/last pictures are; I asked the rest of the family, and they can't either. It looks like a hockey facemask that's been opened? Or half a basketball hoop? but what's going on beneath it, though? (I'm assuming ECFE = early childhood family education (in minnesota?) but that didn't get me any further).

    What am I missing here?

My childhood friend, and fantastic artist, decided to open a Fiverr page to earn some extra money doing art work. Since I wanted to help him get started, I ordered a piece from him. His Fiverr gig is focused on "creating your D&D or RPG character", so I had him turn daughter Abigail into a Mage. I was not disappointed...

Pretty much captured her insane, Chaotic Neutral, 4-year old self. He even added the strange details I requested like the carrots flying out of her satchel, which is a reference to her asking Santa for "pretend carrots" as a Christmas gift.

PM me if you're interested in having him do something for you. He's affordable, quick, and professional.

We have reached the stage of "so and so Made me sad and angry and I don't want to play with them anymore. I don't want to go to daycare tomorrow. I don't want to have any friends!"

Girl is having some very big and fluid bowel movements for about a week now that no diaper seems to be able to handle. We're going through a lot of clothes. Otherwise she seems fine and we checked with a doctor and they thought she was fine, too. It's a bit tiring though.

Last week my son came home sad that he was "the worst kid ever, and the worst kid in his class" and he drew several pictures about "making better choices."

I felt so badly for him. I stressed that he's not bad, and he's trying hard just like everyone else, and to not be so hard on himself but WOOF that was rough.

Setting up my son's birthday party, and I'm kind of getting worried that a lot of kids won't come. My daughter has a core group of friends that she's stayed close with since she was a baby, and has been making more friends as she gets older. But we haven't been able to get a close group really with my son. Some of it has to do with changing childcare a lot more often with my son, and some of it has to do with personality. He's only turning 4, so when he starts actual school it should be easier. But sometimes I feel like we did a lot more for our older kid, and her brother we're kind of just.. coasting with.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

I fully understand the feeling of not putting the same effort in for the second child. But it's impossible to ever do that. You put all the effort you can into Kid A and so unless you've had major life changes when kid B arrives you're diving the same amount of effort into two chunks

I went to pick up the kids from grandma’s house and she asked me to bring long shirts for them. I said sure and asked why, and she said that they are cold. She keeps her thermostat at 62. Well of course they’re cold!

We keep ours at 74, which is probably my fault since I can’t handle the cold, but 62 seems awfully low. Am I wrong?

Anecdotally, 72 is what by far a majority of people I've known have theirs set to. 62 does seem pretty low, except for maybe wanting your bedroom cooler to sleep better or something.

That being said I've definitely had our house quite cold during the winter at least a couple years in the past because our wall heaters were terrible.

How do you deal with relatives gifting you and your baby/kid lots of stuff you really don't want or can't use, even if you talked about it with them before, that your 3 month old in middle/northern Europe in winter doesn't need a Mediterranean summer coat for a 2 year old and we don't really care right now that you thought it looked cute and we also don't need 20 different plastic toys right now we live in a flat not a giant storage room.

I have poor circulation so I literally cannot do anything on a computer if the house is kept at 66 degrees or below.

That is super inconsiderate of people, yet everyone seems to do it. @Mojo_Jojo is currently dealing with an oversized dollhouse and I am wondering what to do with the rocking horse (its a dino, actually) grandpa made, but my kid hasn't touched in over a year.

We have tactically placed toys at family and donated some stuff to a local diner with the excuse that "he can play with it there." I think you just have to be ruthless and keep telling people what kind of gifts are actually appreciated.
