**Crossposting from the Steam thread because it's a rougelike deckbuilder**

Do you like deck builder Roguelikes like Slay the Spire, but find them missing out on spelling? Well worry no longer, because Paperback Adventures has arrived! (into early access that is).

Based on the boardgame of the same name, you will help the fictional novelist Paige Turner as she brainstorms her latest bestselling novel. You can’t let stodgy genre conventions get in the way, so be prepared to face all sorts of surprising enemies and collect a lot of…distinct loot as you piece a strange story together. Play as different genre-based characters, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and playstyles.

The words you spell will generate attack or defense along with potentially activating abilities. The loot will give you unique powers to make each run feel different.

As a personal note, I've worked with Tim Fowers and Jeff Beck in the past. I sent Jeff a message during their kickstarter for Word Domination game detailing an idea I had for the multiplayer stretch goal. I also included ideas for adding unique powers to the characters in the games. He loved my ideas so much that he added the multiplayer idea into the game (with credits!). So yeah, two very cool dudes.

All that being said, I'm no wordsmith and suck at these games. But some of you out there might be great at word stuff, or know a non-gamer wordsmith that might love it.

If you get something to generate block, a good shiv deck can still beat Time Eater...

Said it before, but time eater is just a quality of cards check.

Accuracy boosted shivs are absolutely quality, you just have to do a bit of extra work around making sure you don't end turns on a weird number that sees you eat shit on a debuff turn

yeah, but it's always enjoyable when you have a shiv deck that steamrolls everything and you get to time eater and you have zero footworks, after images, wraith forms, etc.

Oh, for sure. Time Eater does the cardinal sin of taking control away from the player - the Heart has the same "Card Quality Matters" check built in, but dosent feel anywhere near as bad. If time eater just clocked up in strength every 12 cards played, even if it was faster than it currently is, it'd feel *way* less worse.

I knew I should have bought Orange Pellets, just so I could hide that!

Deck got Apoth for it's starting rare, which makes Silent's starter deck go from trash to really good. Had a bullet time leaving act 1, which made Snecko an actually reasonable pickup for once - I skipped Fusion hammer on the grounds I'd benefit from the card draw

Then it just turned into a weird noxious fumes (4 of em!)/tons of Wraith forms deck that had enough card draw to abuse bullet time basically every turn. Heart was a little hairy due to beat of death, but I ended with over 20hp and a fairy pot still to go, so... Good game

Shame it never saw Nightmare, but you can't have everything

Just had a fun Ironclad run.

    Seed: 16VNKZQ5FSWRJ
Corruption+ and Runic Pyramid are very strong together. Also having Ice Cream, Frozen Egg, and an Anger+ by the end of Act 1 felt a little like cheating, and then Nilry's Codex on floor 20 and Feel No Pain+ on floor 22 provided inevitability, such that I might have been able to beat the heart already.

I was at Ascension 11, working my way up on mobile after going to 20 on desktop.

Rushdown is a dumb card that probably shouldn't exist.

    stgu129wgkum.png

I really do not like infinites, but sometimes the game just hands you them on a silver platter. 18 block per cycle of Wrath and Calm? Sure, why the fuck not.

10 card deck that exhausted 5 of it's cards in it's first cycle, so even the heart farting 5 more statuses into the deck couldn't do shit to it.

Very randomly popped in for a normal run, as the myriad gimmicks of Downfall just aren't doing it for me. Honestly, I'm shocked I can still beat A20.

Sad highlight of the run was getting Awoken One and Time Eater for my bosses, and the stone calendar firing on both of their reset turns. =_=

The only time I enjoy playing the Watcher is with divinity builds because I hate swapping between wrath and calm. I understand that she's the strongest character, but I don't find the stance dancing fun.

Meanwhile i'm over here railing on how Rushdown needs to be nerfed hard (my instinct is to make it just draw 1, or make it draw 3 but it can only go off once per turn. I think the first is better), Flurry of Blows should be a rare, and Conjure Blade should be an uncommon and is also badly named (I wanted Reach Heaven/Through Violence to switch names with Conjure Blade/Expunge)

That’s an amazing combination - just grab every power card you can, get insanely powerful.

Then get the final boss who gets stronger with every power card you play, and get your face kicked in, because you didn’t get enough Buffer cards.

    It's watcher, not defect.

So I'm taking cards like Foresight, Nirvana, Battle Hymn, Establishment, and Deva Form.

Study would probably be worth taking, too.

It's very different from your run of the mill stance dance deck.

This is awful advice for anything above A0.

While both make it easier to grab powers, grabbing powers with no rhyme or reason will just get you killed. The only power i'd treat as a slam-dunk with that combo is Creative AI, as it then produces both sustain and energy for you.

Otherwise, you're just diluting your deck to no purpose if you're grabbing powers willy nilly. You could maybe justify it if you got Frozen Egg, and even then you could get yourself killed pretty easily (Too many Innate powers clogging your turn 1)

Powers are about scaling your deck. In Watcher's case, she has a lot of avenues to scale already. With that particular combo, i'd be looking for rushdown (I mean, Rushdown is so stupid strong it's very hard to pass on in general), and maybe the classic and rarely seen due to rushdown's power Deva Form + Fasting combo

I know they’re done tinkering with the game and have moved on to something else at this point but it’s still surprising how something as gross as Rushdown still exists in the vanilla game

Eh, it took a lot of time for Rushdown to be recognized as the problem it was by the community. Like a long, long time. You can go a year back and see Jorbs for instance doing a lot of Flurry of Blows based stuff, instead of forcing Rushdown Infinites. It's also a weird card in that it's problem state (Enabling infinites far too easily), is actually surpassingly difficult to hit, and requires a lot of intent to achieve - and you can still loose Rushdown Infinite runs very easily. Act 2, notoriously, tends to kill Rushdown Infinite decks as they're still forming and lack key pieces.

The ideal RD deck is usually Tantrum, Mental Fortress/Talk to the Hand for block generation & either Inner Peace or the attack that puts you in calm.

Fixing it's not easy, either, because you cant just fix Rushdown alone - you have to hit Flurry at the same time, otherwise you just go back to another set of degernate decks. And how you fix those things is also a question.

My favored fixes are: Rushdown gets it's card draw halved, and Flurry is kicked up to rare, while Conjure Blade or a nerfed Brilliance (Lower it's starting base damage - 12 damage for 1 energy is actually really fucking good) comes down to Uncommon, and Weave maybe drops down to Common. The logic here is Rushdown remains a powerful option, but requires extensively stacking it to turn on infinites and/or inner peace and Sundial. It's also less problematic than a "First time you enter" clause, or kicking it up to Rare - The latter definitely doesn't fix things, and if anything, makes it easier to find.

Flurry needs a small base damage increase to benefit it being a rare, but should become a rare so that you cannot so easily get multiple copies. It's just absurdly powerful for a common due to how stance dancing is available. Plus, it being a Rare better signals that "Hey, stance dancing is really good and you should try it".

Weave can become a common because Scry is underserved right now, and operates on a fairly different paradigm to the rest of Watcher's deck. Having pay off cards at common is fine, and would position it equivalent to Sword boomerang or Heavy Blade as examples. Conjure Blade is just not that exciting as a rare - it's a very powerful card that requires a lot of setup work, meaning it rarely gets time to shine. Tweaking it to Uncommon and possibly fiddling with Expunge's damage (Knock a point or two off) puts it in a healthy postion to encourage people to lean into it, rather than it's current Junk Rare state.

Another roguelite available on Steam today, called Dungeons of Aether.

    https://youtu.be/rZ_Hf9F6uOk

The hook on this game is you have dice to augment your 4 base stats (Atk, Def, Acc, Spd). Turns start with a dice draft that you and the opponent pull from. The dice are color coded to your stats (Red dice = Atk, White = Def, etc). So you'll have to decide if you want to draft more damage, defense, guard, or to strike first. You could also grab a die you don't need to deny your opponent it.

    https://youtu.be/egLUUaENI7Y

4 different characters to play as with their own unique playstyles. Just launched so I'm not sure how good it is or what the gameplay loop is like, but I figure I'd share it here. Obviously we shouldn't expect StS quality since that bar has been set way too high, but you never know if a roguelite might be for you.

I played it for about an hour, it's pretty fun so far! The dice draft mechanic does a lot to add more planning to your turns, although sometimes a bunch of defense dice show up and there's nothing you can really do about it. Had like 3 turns in a row where nobody could do anything because neither side could generate enough attack, but that seems rare, and also seems like it's less of a problem with options granted later. So far, while a lot of options have been picked up, it hasn't been too complex - but I'm still very early in the game. Also I have been hoarding items and have had to discard things.

And of course, the art is amazing.

I've got 15 hard clears on Slice and Dice, and I feel like it's just too random. It's a great time waster, but the arc of a run is too samey, the "pick your poison" challenges are wildly different levels of difficulty for them to be randomly presented, and it's a bit too much "just play the odds" because you can get too many things that are fun in a run that you can't select because it doesn't work with your other random stuff you've gotten so far. If I had a half hour commute, it'd be a great game to kick around, but playing it on my own time ... shrug

OK so I turned off fullscreen and the game froze, twice in a row. Excellent start! In one level, I killed everything and didn't get the required key. So I had to restart that...

But anyways! I've put three hours into it so far. I'm enjoying it! It swaps up characters a bunch with you initially, which helps keep things fresh. There is a good level of strategy in a given turn, too. You should think about what you want to do, and it's almost a puzzle each turn to maximize what you want to happen. It's easy to make mistakes if you aren't paying attention, but in a good way. Like, the UI and mechanics are very clear (if their attack is a bigger number than your defense, you will get hit!), so it never feels like you are managing too much or the game cheated on you or anything. The mistakes you make are stuff you go "ohhh, right, I need to be more careful with that."

The main thing is does it have, like, 100 hours of stayability or anything like that? I'm not sure. In any given run, it seems like there may not be too much that's different? Like, in Slay the Spire each character is very different and they each have a variety of different decks, and the relics can make huge differences. Here, the characters are somewhat different but not as much, and the items make some differences but again aren't completely revolutionary. But either way, not everything needs to be a 300-hour game  . I think there's a good chance to have fun with this for how long it lasts. I'll have to see how long the story mode is, and what the "challenge" mode is like after that.

Slice and Dice is missing having a map like StS's, i think, and all the meat that could add to amerioalte randomness. Because you're not wrong, it's VERY random on a number of levels. I like a lot of it's ideas, but it def didnt hold me long term.

This is turn 4, btw. Technically turn 5, as i vaulted once for hand manipulation shenanigan's (So that i wouldn't just die to a handful of statuses) As watcher infinites go, this was one of the infiniest.

16 card deck that exhausted down to having 4 cards left in it - Fear No Evil, Tantrum, Vigilance and Eruption. I even managed to be *making* energy thanks to Toolbox spitting out a Madness that then hit Vigilance.

    finally

i have at least one win on all characters on A20

pretty standard build tho, nothing unusual - Strength/Limit Break on Ironclad, Shiv/Discard deck for Silent, Focus lightning/ice orb on Defect, and a somewhat unusual hybrid Rushdown/Divinity with Watcher

Watcher ended up being the one I just completed, Brilliance was doing 254+ damage (in Divinity) rather fast - Rushdown just became a way to card draw and earn block through stance dancing

@Whelk What's giving you grief with getting past A14?

I am, as always, happy to do some tutorial streams of various characters and show why i do things and what my goals are at any given point in a run - i'm no Jorbs (for one thing, i like reloading), but i'm still preddy good at the game.

Also you never know @Vyolynce maybe i just played a ton years back with my system date set to 2023 for this exact circumstance.

    and grats at @asofyeun
