Give me a cyberpunk noir movie about a former virtual idol making ends meet as a deeply cynical private detective.

Actually, having written that, I assume there are at least a few wildly popular animes with that exact plotline, so ignore me.

This would make for an amazing Eclipse Phase character

One of the "best" parts of Bullshit! was the skeptic community forcing them to apologize for using Steve Milloy as an "expert" on secondhand smoke. (For those who don't know, Milloy is a notorious "scientist for hire" that has made a career of defending corporations on topics like cigarette smoke, global warming, etc.)

Also, the New York Times just released a piece about how YouTube radicalized Brazil:
Members of the nation’s newly empowered far right — from grass-roots organizers to federal lawmakers — say their movement would not have risen so far, so fast, without YouTube’s recommendation engine.

New research has found they may be correct. YouTube’s search and recommendation system appears to have systematically diverted users to far-right and conspiracy channels in Brazil.

A New York Times investigation in Brazil found that, time and again, videos promoted by the site have upended central elements of daily life.

Teachers describe classrooms made unruly by students who quote from YouTube conspiracy videos or who, encouraged by right-wing YouTube stars, secretly record their instructors.

Some parents look to “Dr. YouTube” for health advice but get dangerous misinformation instead, hampering the nation’s efforts to fight diseases like Zika. Viral videos have incited death threats against public health advocates.

And in politics, a wave of right-wing YouTube stars ran for office alongside Mr. Bolsonaro, some winning by historic margins. Most still use the platform, governing the world’s fourth-largest democracy through internet-honed trolling and provocation.

YouTube’s recommendation system is engineered to maximize watchtime, among other factors, the company says, but not to favor any political ideology. The system suggests what to watch next, often playing the videos automatically, in a never-ending quest to keep us glued to our screens.

But the emotions that draw people in — like fear, doubt and anger — are often central features of conspiracy theories, and in particular, experts say, of right-wing extremism.

Minecraft is turning 10 this year so everyone is going back to it to show how much Fortnite sucks, despite doing the same thing to Minecraft 10 years ago.

Part two of Lindsay Ellis's Game of Thrones video is up on her Patreon and I think it's better than the first part, but it's still not incredibly compelling stuff, especially with a runtime of over an hour. Which is disappointing, because I think she's probably the best in this particular field. I don't have a ton to say about most of it, or at least I don't have many interesting things to say about it, but I'm going to drop some thoughts on the very end of the video in a spoiler, because it's not...you know, out out, yet.
Once the core of the video is done, which is the criticism of the show and its ending, she addresses the backlash to the episode. And she's not 100% wrong in stating that the backlash was different than say, the Last Jedi backlash, in that most of the anger was directed at the showrunners, rather than at actresses who had no control over anything, who were subsequently driven off social media. But she also says that you have to care a lot to be as mad as everyone was at the end of the show, and also that the other thing that proves the people behind the backlash were actually good is that they started a fundraiser for Emilia Clarke's charity, in response to how bad they found the ending.

And...it's very good that money was raised for charity. I want to make that clear. But I don't like, "people cared about this, that's why they're so mad!" as a handwave, because the shitbags who harassed Kelly Marie Tran off of social media also cared a lot, and that "caring a lot," doesn't fucking mean anything. And plenty of shitty fanrage campaigns have tried to donate to charities to prove that they were actually good people, you know, they're just mad about this one inconsequential thing.

I won't claim that's what Game of Thrones fans are doing, because from all I've been able to tell, they largely have just yelled at the showrunners. But there's been enough of the other stuff done by bad actors that I'm a little wary of, "see, we DO care! look we're doing a charity drive!" being tossed out as a defense for anyone.

I'm not a patron so maybe I'm missing some nuance it would be impossible for you to convey in a reasonable length post, but I'm willing to bet the Last Jedi Is A Complete Cinematic Failure guy never sent death threats to Kelly Marie Tran. It sounds to me like she's trying to justify being really, really mad about a TV show vs. Star Wars because unlike them she's right. And I'm sure that if I watched Game of Thrones and her video I would agree with her reasons for why it's bad more than I agree with the reasons Cinematic Failure thinks The Last Jedi is bad, but IDK, I guess don't act like ranting about how you think they're terrible writers is more noble than ranting that you think Rian Johnson is a terrible writer.

My impression from the first video is that she's just way too close to the whole thing and has lost perspective about what other people will care about watching. But it's her time to waste so whatever

That’s a bummer. I found her previous GoT video to be very shallow and relied more on memetic humor than anything insightful. It felt very OF YouTube in a way that I usually see her navigate away from. And while I’m usually down for anything she has to say, I’m not sure I’m really on board for more GoT exploration this far after the fact. Especially if there isn’t much new to add.

Though maybe that’s the conundrum. GoTs ending isn’t bad for any particularly enlightening or surprising reason.

I feel like it didn’t have as much of a unified theme. There are for some things worth examining and taking down but she spends a lot of it going “this character became badly written” in a way that doesn’t add up to a larger criticism.

It seems like what would be an aside in another of her videos. "The characters' actions are dictated by the plot, and not by who the characters are. Here are a handful of examples," rather than, "here's a character by character breakdown of how the writing is bad." Everything felt more surface level than her other videos have.

She goes through Character by Character to show how they acted and where their storylines went in the final season was wildly inconsistent with their characterizations in the previous seasons.

Central point of the video seemed clear to me
D&D had an endpoint of "Jon kills Dany", so nearly every questionable plot happening and character decision was built up around making that act justifiable. Jon (and Tyrion) gotta look sympathetic, Dany gotta look heinous. And putting black and white in a series defined by grey, ironically overlooking some darker shades in the process, helped make those decisions worse. She nitpicks a lot, but it all channels to that point.

Side note I love the dumb flute music whenever Euron was on screen.
