I just bought Celeste based on these last few comments. I have an anxiety issue--seeing a therapist starting in July--and I'm about to go on vacation in the Rocky Mountains. Seems perfect.
I died 97 times in Chapter 2, but I love the story.
Celeste was probably my GOTY 2018. Might be the best precision platformer I've ever played, and given how I'm a platforming nut, I'm not saying that lightly. But everything in the game works for me. Aesthetics, story, mechanics, level design, difficulty curve, soundtrack (god that soundtrack), everything is practically laser targeted to my tastes.
So I got an interesting reaction from my wife when I bought Celeste on the weekend
Context:
Daughter's name is Celeste
I was browsing last week's Switch sales when, of course, Celeste came up. I'm not a big platforming guy, but when I scrolled past CeIeste (the game), Celeste (the child) exclaimed "hey! That's my name!". My wife was in the room and just raised her eyebrows at me basically to say "well, you stepped in it now". I saw the acclaim Celeste (the game) got and saw it was 50% off, so I said what the hey and pushed the button.
Anyways, started playing at first with child in the room, no problems. However, after Celeste (the child) went to bed, I continued up to about chapter 3, where
Celeste early game spoilers:
Dark Madeleine
is introduced.
At this point Celeste (the game)'s theme becomes clearer.
As the level progresses (further spoilers):
Dark Madeleine continuously needles Madeleine and tries to urge her to give up, tells her she's useless and pathetic, etc etc.
Further context: My wife has been fighting chronic depression her entire life
From behind me, I hear "Turn that off, right now, and don't ever play it in front of our daughter again"
Taken aback, I comply.
While what ultimately happened was a bit uncomfortable between my wife and I, I couldn't help but marvel at how affecting that game is. Take from that what you will.
Celeste is a game basically about anxiety and trying to come to terms with it. It's extremely good, but also I'm not sure how it would hit someone with depression.
The game is about the creator's own battles with anxiety and his fight with it, and about learning to live with it and not letting it consume you or beat you - but also realizing that it's part of you, and you can't just shunt it off
Nonetheless, I totally understand the mom not wanting to plant the seeds of it in her daughter.
They will be planted regardless just from the inevitability of having to deal with life, and I don't see how shielding her from tools that could possibly help her deal with it helps.../shrug. To each their own though.
It sounds like his daughter is really young though. She doesn't need to be "coached" into that kind of self-incriminating inner monologue. It might be just a little too "adult theme" and disturbing for a little one. It would break my heart if I heard MY 4 year old verbally flagellating himself (repeating game dialog), even if he didn't really understand why.

Celeste is so good, it was my #2 game last year and I hate precision platformers.
OK, so I have Cadence of Hyrule (which I will finish this weekend), but there's also My Friend Pedro coming out, and Crash Team Racing I'm interested in getting... And there's at least a few games I'm interested in getting next month.
Guys, is this what having a backlog is like? Am I worrying about having too many games to play on my Nintendo Game Toy? Am I a real gamer now?

Yes. Your secret decoder ring is in the mail.

Whoa whoa which games on the Genesis collection are terrible?!
Phantasy Star 2 I will give you due to the camera and dungeons. Better not be talking about Sword of Vermilion though. I guess it does take a little time to get going and get in a groove but I still find it solid.
I'm not a great judge of RPGs so I wouldn't feel right saying they are good or bad. But I could use one less Columns game, Thunderblade, Space Harrier, and Galaxy Force have aged terrible on the Genesis, and the port of VF2 isn't great. Also while Golden Ax and Altered Beast have aged really bad, Golden Ax 3 is legit a horrendous game.
Wild. When I played them recently, I found Golden Axe 1 & 2 to be more frustrating than fun (without a second player, at the very least), while 3 was the most enjoyable.
Aside from some other neat touches, it mainly came down to hit boxes/detection. The first two require precision and are unforgiving, whereas 3 was a bit more generous in not having to be so precisely lined up.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Yeah I thought Golden Axe 3 was the most polished and enjoyable, but all of them are too difficult. They're essentially arcade games without the ability to put in more quarters and that always is an exercise in frustration.
So has anyone tried those hori joycons that have a proper d-pad? I find it really hard to do some motions with using the buttons as pad setup.
Yeah I have it and it's a life changer
I ordered one, it seems like it would really help for some games. I am a bit disappointed it doesn’t have wireless (would have gladly paid twice the price for one that worked with the joycon grips) but oh well.
Are those games any good? Did the first 3 ever come out in the US?
You need to be tolerant of some level of jankiness, but they're certainly particularly interesting and original games when you get past that.
The first two came out in English; The first game was just titled "Disaster Report" (for the PS2), or SOS: The Final Escape in Europe. The second game was "Raw Danger" in both the US and Europe.
As a fan of text adventures, I keep an eye on one text adventure reviewer - Andrew Plotkin - who occasionally looks into more modern games with the same sort of mindset. Here's what he said about Disaster Report (Bear in mind he's writing for an audience that's not necessarily familiar with action gaming)
I'm hoping that the use of the English title in the promo stuff can be seen as a sign that they're at least looking into a Western release.

Wow, @mattclem I haven’t heard that name in a while, and didn’t expect to hear it here. One of the most influnential Interactive Fiction writers, in my opinion. Spider and Web may be my favorite text adventure game outside of the old Infocom series and Shade has some of the best writing I’ve ever seen.
I got the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection last time it was on sale and immediately started kicking myself because I had just bought a usb Venom arcade stick for my Xbox One.
It's compatible with PlayStation and pc, so I plugged it into my Switch today, lo and behold, it works!
I still can't throw a fireball in the first Street Fighter. Fucking hell, that game is bad.
Beat me on Wii U: Raybies
Beat me on 360: Raybies666
I plan on getting Astral Chain and probably regretting it because I am just terrible at Platinum games. My reflexes don't do twitch action any longer.
I was pretty good at Bayonetta 1 but then sometime between then and Bayo 2 apparently I just started sucking again :P I'll probably end up getting this and not playing it like all the other damn games I need to friggin get to still.. *sigh*

I'm having a ton of fun playing Cadence of Hyrule with my partner, and they've specifically requested "More games where you explore Hyrule. Or at least explore a nice place that is mostly green and you wander around solving puzzles or something. Nothing in space."
One of the previous big hits with them was Yonder, which really fits that bill. Combat's fine, it's just rolling hills and exploration takes precedence.
Anything come to mind for Switch immediately based on that? At the rate we're chewing through this we'll be done tomorrow.
Yeah, I saw that price and knew people wouldn't be having it. The Witcher 3 for Switch is full price, BUT it's being rebuilt for the Switch and it has all the DLC and the full game on a bigger-size cart, so I kind of get why.
Capcom can't seem to quite get their heads dislodged from their rear ends when it comes to game pricing. I really don't know why they're so bad when it comes to how they support the Switch.
Those $4,000 worth of Switch games I've bought were just brief flights of fancy, to distract me from my one true love. Just candle, lit to briefly stave against the darkness, the emptiness within. Endless ways to pass the time, to forget her, though I feel nothing for them. Nothing. Just to forget her. To forget her... until she comes back to me. Will she? Who knows. Who knows...

Well they posted that from their American Twitter account, so I kinda assumed it was coming to the west.
The tweet was the announcement that the game is coming west next year.

Would be nice to get 3 in some form to fill the gap, but that's long ago now.

I remember when I had time to be good at games.
It's in Japanese but you still should be able to get a good idea of what's happening as it is a game mechanics trailer.
I'm certainly even more interested after having watched it.
