I finally am back in the Nintendo ecosystem. My body demanded Fire Emblem and I was forced to oblige, it's out for delivery as I type.
Outside of no brainers like Breath of the Wild and the Mana collection what else makes for a good action or strategy RPG on Switch that one can digest in 20-30 minute chunks?
I don’t know about 20-30 minute chunks, but depending on whether you’ve played them before Tales of Vesperia, Ys 8, and Disgaea 5 are all great. Dragon Quest XI is out next month and has a beefy demo on the eshop (progress carries over).

I mean, technically with sleep mode you can play anything you want in 20-30 minute chunks. But, uh, let's see what I have off of my shelf.
Super Robot Wars T is great, assuming you're fine with paying exorbitant import prices(like $80US for a new copy). There is an english language option for the Asia region release.
Tales of Vesperia has a Switch port if you never got the chance to play it.
On the list of good-but-not-great, we have...

I gotta push Into The Breach & Slay The Spire for Switch as well. Great little games to do some short play with but easy to pick up and put down as well.
I second Disgaea 5, really fun and crazy SRPG that will last you a long time.
Disgaea 4 is also coming out soon this fall. I would recommend looking into them as they might end up being the final and best versions of these games available, since NIS is facing severe financial trouble and possibly bankruptcy.

I very strongly recommend Into The Breach. It's a masterclass of how some very simple elements can be put together to make a very deep game full of interesting decisions. Do note that it's tough; playing on "Easy" isn't a waste of time, it's a good way to learn how the game's systems work together.

Disgaea 4 has better characters/story too. Though I already have the Vita version of that, so...
NIS financial troubles are sad, because they made some good stuff.
Well it's down to a choice I can get Torchlight for free. I could get Peachball for about 20 more or Astral chain/Zelda for 38 more. I have been racked with indecision about this. I just don't know

There's Octopath Traveler criticism? I thought it was universally beloved?
There's Octopath Traveler criticism? I thought it was universally beloved?
It's possible to love something while still recognizing it has faults.
I mean, I do love Octopath Traveler, but that doesn't change the fact that every story chapter has the same basic structure, every dungeon is functionally identical (one path to the boss with shorter sidepaths to treasures), and how this game about a group of people travelling together treats each character as though they're completely alone at all times save for a few bonus conversations that take place in some curious bonus conversation otherworld.
I enjoy Octopath but I think it is VERY flawed.
But I really appreciate how it managed to make old style combat feel fresh. And it's the most gorgeous take on an old style RPG that I've seen in years, though apparently MUCH of the game is actually polygons made to look like sprites. But still, mission accomplished.
I like jrpgs and I like retro games and modern games that use pixel aesthetics, but Octopath looks both not fun and not pretty to me. Just reinforcing the notion that no, the praise and appeal is not universal.
The strengths of 8P are it's visuals, music, and the combat system, which could easily be applied to other games (think FFT, Chrono Trigger, FF6, Ogre series, etc.). The way the chapter bosses are personal to each character is nice, but the cost was a non-existent party. A loner like Therion suddenly running around with 7 other people but at the same time not acknowledging that they exist is a little weird after all.
Still, the strengths certainly overcome the flaws.

Octopath should have very much been my bag, but it very much wasn't. Not to say it was a bad game, but that it just didn't do anything for me personally.
I'm weird in that as long as I enjoy the gameplay and the music then I can deal with just about anything that a game throws at me. I loved Octopath a lot.
I adore Octopath, but I genuinely hope that a sequel comes along that perfects the formula. Basically being what A link to the past was to the original Legend of Zelda.

But even the original Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past had Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in between.

FYI, if you do decide to upgrade to the new Switch you can't just put in your old micro SD card with your old games on it. The copy to your computer trick won't work either, so you'll have to download all your games again.

But man that extra battery life is so sweet.
It doesn't take that long to redownload everything at least. And there is an easy list of games on the eShop and you just click down the list.
But yeah it is annoying you can't just swap the card and have Nintendo just check that you own the stuff.

I just want every RPG I play from now on to use the 2.5D engine that OT used.

Link's appearance looks more to me like the look of a South Park character with an expression of increasing disdain at the entire situation than what Nintendo was actually going for. The aesthetic is neat but I can't look at Link and not be mildly amused.

I really hope they have something planned for ff4-6 on switch that isn’t just throwing the latest mobile versions up and calling it a day.
I got drunk on the weekend and downloaded Rad and now I've played something like 14 hours of Rad and I think I kinda like it. Rad.
What's the tl;dr on the game? What type of gameplay. I've heard people mention it.
It's a 3/4 isometric view (think Toejam and Earl) rogue-like that takes place in a post-apocalypse. Gameplay loop is that you deploy as a spunky teen with a baseball bat where you go out and beat up monsters to gain cassette tapes to buy stuff/upgrade the economy and also accumulate radiation so that you can mutate (level up) new traits to help you along the way.
It also has a great narrator.

So I finished the Blue Lion track for Fire Emblem. It was ok I guess? I feel like a lot of plot hooks were left dangling, but I guess I have to play the other houses to fill everything in. Some seemed more personal to the characters of other houses, and reasonable to leave dangling. Others seemed pretty important to the core story around why anything that happened happened, and I'm a little bummed I have to play through it again to get that maybe.
I started a Golden Deer playthrough after and dicked around a little bit before I decided to jump ship and check out that shiny new Dragon Quest XI demo.
And what a fucking demo it is. I heard it was long, but this is turning into a Doom Shareware quality demo. I figured tutorial rock climb, leave your village, get to the castle town and then demo over. Want to see inside the castle town? Buy the full game! Nope, keeps going. Things happen in castle town, big ol' Dragon Quest into plays showing off all the friends and adventures. Ok, it's over now? Nope, keeps going. Hit a few more story beats in castle town, explore another huge open area, a few more story beats in your home town, exploring another big ass area, and that's as far as I've gotten.
I thought demos this extensive went extinct along with the 90's style Expansion Pack.
Everything I keep hearing about the demo is that it's possibly as long as actual Dragon Quest 1. Maybe fewer towns but I assume a little more fun and interesting than DQ1 also. :P
