I have to imagine that the major decider for how many games there are going to be is "how well did FF7r sell?"

If it sold really well, they'll stretch it out for as long as seems feasible. If it sells poorly, they might just squeeze the entire rest of the game into one episode with less of the expanded stuff shown in FF7r.

They probably haven't started development on the other parts yet, so I have to imagine that a lot of stuff is still up in the air.

Thing is, I can see the first game focusing on and expanding Midgar because it's hugely iconic, but also underutilised in the original, but the greater world not being built out nearly as much in later games simply because all those locations do actually get a lot of play over the story already. Building the Golden Saucer or Junon up to a massive scale doesn't really add much compared to what expanding Midgar would imo, so Part 2 ending at the Temple of the Ancients, Part 3 at the Crater and 4 being the endgame would be a decent doling out of the content, without going completely overboard scaling stuff up.

Midgar is the best part of FF7, so honestly I'm 100% down with an entire game of that

One part is going to entirely be the Golden Saucer with guest director Yu Suzuki developing mini-games.

They showed the Shinra building lobby, which was pretty late in midgar iirc.

I mean the obvious endpoint of the Midgar section is leaving Midgar, specifically this shot:

I wonder how many people will play FF7 part 1, get frustrated that they have to wait for part 2, and just go out and buy one of the many, MANY ports of the original.

I still think the game's title needs a second pass. Final Fantasy VII Remake doesn't really reflect the scope of the project.

maybe not left out but they seem to be adding new stuff to it, like there was no sequence in the original where Cloud was doing the motorcycle minigame with Jessie on the bike with him.

This is the biggest reason it sort of makes sense to go the way they did with this. Midgar has so much going on visually that if they wanted to make it look as good as people are hoping, you kinda have to extend your time there to justify it. A lot of the other places you visit in the game are much smaller, so it makes some sense that you could visit multiple cities in a subsequent game.

They also buy themselves some more time to figure out how they're going to handle the world map stuff.

Plus you like, never return to Midgar to visit. So it makes sense for it to be standalone.

I really wanna see what they will do with the Midgar serpent in the remake, though.

I wonder how they'll treat the overworld in the future episodes. Will they go back to old-school chibi-on-a-map stuff? Will they try to scale things up, and make it more of a FFXV thing? Will they make it more linear?

Once Waypoint reminded me about the car bit, I can’t imagine them not doing the FFXV stuff, right? I mean that seems like such a layup.

making those XV open world zones seemed like a lot of work and they might not have been happy how much value they got out of them, or they might have been happy with them. I guess we'll find out.

There was a part of me that honestly thought they were gonna either end it right before the uh....sequence I hope doesn’t get adapted 1 for 1 or after the whole thing with the section plate.

They 100% said the first release is all of Midgar. They've added to it, in ways we don't know yet, and apparently it takes two Blu-Ray discs somehow. None of that is speculative, it is what was said on stage.

What we don't know is how much ground the next installment will cover, and neither do Square (to which they admitted the days after the Square presentation).

I've been assuming that "two Blu-Ray discs" was just saying it was about 100GB in file size, which is huge but probably mostly texture size

Would they even have to do that? They can just do real time rendering in the engine, we're at that point now. Though as far as textures go, yeah, I'm guessing this is straight up "have a 4k TV you nerds" thing. Edit - On Square's part.

That would probably be sufficient, but I assume they will render the fuck out of some cutscenes. Think of the strands of hair alone, no way they'll render that in real time
