Three kids, but quite the spread between em. 19 year old, 12 year old, and 7 year old.

I am glad I didn't have more than one kid at a time in diapers and general overall helplessness.

So I just had my baby girl, and the question is, when do I get to sleep? I feel like something will happen to her if I close my eyes for a minute. Is this parenting, constant panic?

Depends on when she gets down into a 'full' sleep cycle pattern. All three of mine did that pretty quickly - some aren't so lucky.

As for worrying, that stops for awhile then starts again when she starts to notice boys (or whatever). Then you never sleep again for another good chunk of years.

I feel uncomfortable volunteering because I worry about looking like a creep. I've had a couple interactions with police in the past wondering why I'm hanging out "alone" at a park and had to introduce my daughter to them.

I've heard stories like this, and lots of people saying mothers take their kids and leave the park when a lone man shows up with a kid in tow, and the occasional outright arrest for picking up your children from school, and it's incredibly discouraging as a father.

My experience has been wholly different, though, I've been hit on at the park a number of times. I scheduled a "play date" one time and hooo boy was that lady upset that I brought toddlers with me. "What the stupid fuck kind of play date involves leaving the kids at OOOOH I think I'll just be going now."

Hang out around military bases with units that deploy. Plenty of chances to say no. Sadly.

I was blindsided but after discussing it (not with my wife holy shit) I've been told that it's less a thing than cheaters will coyly propose plausible pretexts, with "fix the sink" and other porn worthy examples also being used. The consensus of my female friends was that this woman was as clueless as I was oblivious because leaving the kids home would have been a giveaway.

The school my kids attend participates in a program called Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), which is centered around getting dads or father-figures to spend an entire day at their children's school volunteering. They try to have one volunteer there every normal day of the school year, after about a month or so for everyone to settle in each year, as well as a number of lunch and recess only slots for dads who can't manage an entire day off of work. Every single slot filled up at their school quickly, and there are 29 names on the wait list for any cancellations.

I did my volunteer day today. Started with 15 minutes assisting kids getting out of cars in the drop-off lane in front of school and then went for a picture with my kids. Then on to my daughter's kindergarten class to see how they start the day off and read a book to the class. From there to my son's third grade homeroom to help as kids were paired up to complete math worksheets and answer their questions while working. Then outside for the first kindergarten recess where I ended up pushing my daughter and three friends on the swings for about 10 minutes and chasing them around the playground. 30 minute break for coffee and internet and then over to third grade art where we worked on origami cranes. Then it was back with kindergarten for lunch with my daughter and a whole lot of helping kids open granola bars and other assorted sealed snacks (really made me glad that I've always opened anything similar for my daughter when I pack it, so she isn't always looking for help) and then out for their second recess. Then recess and lunch with 4th grade, followed by recess and lunch with my son and the third grade. I ended up keeping 6 3rd graders going "soooo high" on the swings for about 10 minutes and holy crap was that a workout! Then helping out with a 1st grade PE class and over to the library to help second graders check books out. Finally a quick survey about the experience and I got to write notes to both of my kids that will be delivered to them tomorrow.

It was a great day overall. My kids had a good time and my son only seemed embarrassed to have his dad around once. My daughter was especially happy, and the only part of the day that really felt awkward at all was when her friends kept running up and hugging me at recess. But it was cute and the teachers out there seemed to think it was pretty funny, so hey. I even got out with enough time to sneak in a 15 minute stop at the grocery store on the way home and beat the school bus with about 40 seconds to spare. Who could ask for more? :P

Watch DOGS might be my favorite thing, like, ever?

It started at my son’s school 2 years ago. I signed up for 2 days, and then after the first one I signed up for another in the spring.

Last year, I signed up for 2 in the fall and 2 in the spring, making sure one of the Fall ones was Halloween (I went as a Watch DOG).

This year, I'm doing 1 a month (definitely Halloween, as well; going as a Watch Scurvy Dog).

We've expanded the program to have 2 slots each day.

I highly recommend it to anyone who has an option to go spend a day at school. Like, school lunches and recess and reading with kids and helping them with Virginia's Native American history and and and ... Just a blast.

That sounds great, Elvenshae! Unfortunately our school is big enough that we're only allowed to sign up for one day each and there's still that large wait list for any cancellations. I'd love to go do another day - maybe they'll consider opening it up to 2 slots each day next year. On the other hand, it's great that there are so many dads who are willing and able to come in for a day and do this.

At home with the baby. Sucks being a dad and having to wake up mom because she just wants the nipple. Have yo go give blood again tomorrow because her jaundice levels are high. Hope everything is fine.

I tell you, I always thought baby spit up was so nasty. She spit up on me twice today and I didn't even flinch. Got a wipe, wiped it off.

So this is what true love is.

You should never put your baby in direct sunlight because they are a lot more susceptible to UV damage, and the incidence of cancer after getting a sunburn are much higher for infants.*

And now that you have two completely opposite opinions, you have the complete new parent experience!

*This is a real thing that my pediatrician told me, but I'm guessing they just meant don't let them sit in direct sun for a long time.

I think you're talking about different types of sun exposure here. The rule is "would a pasty gent like Mojo need suncream?" and if so then don't put the baby in it.

Yeah, in this case, I’m talking about doing their 5-10 minutes of tummy time naked on a blanket* on a sunny spot on the floor, not dropping them off at the beach. :D

To be fair, she was like 2 weeks old and we were going to the beach for a few days, so we were specifically asking about sunscreen.

I think the doctor was mostly trying to impress upon us that babies burn real easy. So you can’t expect to just put sunscreen on them like you would yourself. Turned out fine though. Mostly had her in the shade except 5-10 minutes here or there.

Probably something to do with chemical exposure while all the baby's systems are still spooling up. The reason why sunburns are bad is that baby's skin cells are already growing quite vigorously. Making the damage control system kick in while things are still in the process of getting started can be a problem. Do you want keloid scarring? Because this is how you get keloid scarring. :-1:

It's one of those perceived value things that makes me wonder why they took so long to catch on. $15 dollars 'feels' like a lot of money to sink into fun center games when that's all you get. That same amount to get you all the games that can be played all day long? Feels like a bargain.

I have no idea how many whales there'd be, nor how many kids who'd be trying to stretch a buck or two, but if they're setting the price at $15, it should be safe to assume their incoming cash per person is less than that. Guaranteeing $15 per player is probably a nice step up from whatever it would've been.

It sounded pricey at first until I thought back to the 80's and 90's when my folks would give me a roll of quarters and set me loose on an arcade. $15 isn't much given inflation, and some games could easily eat that before you beat them. I mean beating Ghosts and Goblins for less than $30 seems like the thing of fantasies.

The place has the Terminator Salvation shooter, and the only other place in town with that game charges $2 per credit. That damn game is designed to eat money. $15 feels like a deep discount if I'm being honest.

The place also has 4 VR computer hookups, which is just groovy.

The thing I hate about 2/3 year olds is that they feed off one another. Bad behavior rapidly escalates to the singularity and good behavior somehow always manages to wrap around to the same outcome as bad.

I took both kids into a store by myself and to defuse a dual tantrum I let both walk with me on vigorous threat of injury if either runs off. This has never gone well before but today they surprised me.

The only time they left my side was when we passed an old lady in an amigo struggling to get eggs out of the cooler. Sam pulled the door open and Tony put the dozen eggs in her car (a little hard but the attempt was there).

Then Tony put another dozen eggs in her cart ("Only one dearie my are you helpful!") And Sam put an 18 pack ("No, no, dearie that's enough help."). Then Tony ran to an endcap and brought a pack of Oreos ("I just needed eggs.") And by the time I secure those Sam is trying to put a gallon of milk in her cart ("Now listen you little shit!").

So there I am with one kid over my shoulder and the other under my arm fleeing the scene and trying to figure out how to reward being helpful but still enforce boundaries on unwanted help.
