Userbenchmarks just changed their rating system to weight single core more heavily over multicore, for the record. No idea if there's some marketing money behind that, but it wouldn't surprise me.
All they do is aggregate random peoples rigs so there's no real controls or data validity.
It's an SEO ad machine more than anything.

If you are in the market for a $500 CPU, there is one very good reason to buy intel: good fucking luck getting your hands on a 3900x. I expect the lack of availability will change over the next 3 months, but this was a paper launch.
Is there any reason to choose a i7-9700K over a i5-9600K? There is a $100 difference in price. This would primarily be for gaming. No video encoding or the like.
Is there any reason to take a 9600k over a 3600 right now, practically, unless you already own something with that socket? 5% percent difference, big woop. Same with the 3700x versus the 9700k.
I was assuming they weren't looking to change mobos.
But I mean, there's such a nil difference between Intel generations that if you're looking at a 9600k with a board change, I'd kind of agree and just go with a Ryzen 3600. If not, get the i7. i5's are just a bad decision right now.
No this would be with new mobos. I've been burned too many times by AMD. I realize that's not the enlightened view but I just don't have any confidence in their products. Especially with a new line. I'll take predictability over performance.
Currently I have i5-4670K. I've been monitoring my cpu and it's been bottlenecking on certain games. Pegging at a 100% while my GPU is at %40. So I've been thinking about small upgrade. The mobo I have is an 1150 so any upgrade I have to replace it and the memory too. So saving a $100 would be nice if there isn't any significant difference in game performance.
If you're dead set on intel, get the 9700k. don't get an i5 part.
But if the price does matter, I don't think we can stress enough how much a Ryzen 3600 or 3600X will run circles around a 9600k for the same or less money.
I don't think you'll find anyone here who would actually recommend buying an intel desktop part. AMD's products are better.
but again, if you're dead set on intel, go nuts, just get the 9700k. It's not like you're buying a bad part, it's just not the best product out there.
It's a shame I needed a new computer last year and not this year. I would have gone AMD instead of Intel.
Build an AMD and sell the Intel before the prices collapse.
Edit: Back to monitors.
1440p, 144Hz.
I'm seeing a few that hit both. But I'm also seeing interesting ones that are either 1080p and 144Hz, or 1440p ultra-widescreen and 60Hz. (I'm not even really considering panel type.)
Downscaling from 1440p to 1080p looks pretty awful
Good to know. Maybe I should wait to upgrade the monitor until I have a video card that can handle 1440p.
My current setup:
I think I could disconnect the 23" monitors and fit 27" monitors in their place. Or maybe remove the entire monitor stand and replace it with a 32" or a UWQHD. Sadly, the TV is required as I switch between two HDMI inputs, my work PC and home PC. (I guess I could replace the TV with a 1440p monitor with HDMI...)
the rule of thumb for downscaling is it only looks good if the monitor's native resolution is divisible by the downscaled resolution. 4k is 3840x2160 pixels, which is exactly twice the pixel height and width of 1080p's 1920x1080 pixels, so that's why a 4k display downscales to 1080p cleanly. 1440p displays will scale down to 720p cleanly, since 1440p is 2560x1440 pixels, double the height and width of 720p's 1280x720 pixels.

Just a couple of days after I was struggling, they are basically in stock, at least at Amazon. I think supply is finally starting to outstrip demand. I imagine they'll be back in stock at Newegg soon.
4K gaming is basically the realm of 2080 Super tier cards, right?
Edit: Wow, 4K 144Hz monitors are SPENDY.
There are two schools of thought:
1) "This is the piece of your rig you'll be directly interfacing with, so spend the money there" [tangent: also the excuse given by mech kb fanatics]
2) "A good monitor used to be around $100 and I shouldn't have to pay 5 times that now, to get a solid experience" [blame GSync imo]
They're both right
You guys are going to counter with, "you absolutely can get a great 1080p60 monitor for $100 and it's a solid experience" and you're right.
We're in the next generation step. Prices were similar when I was trying to get rid of my CRT and buy a good flat panel, 18 years ago (fuck I'm old).
My advice is to take the middle ground and find a really good Freesync panel that can use GSync in the $300 range, with 1440p 144Hz. As much as I like my TN panel, I recommend at least a VA panel.

My 3900x is out for delivery. It's the last thing I need before I can start the build. I've got all the parts lined up, ready to go when it gets here.

IDK if you'd really be getting the most out of a $380 pairing it with a 3700x. Honestly, there's little reason to spent over $300 on an x570 board unless you are getting a 3950x and plan on heavily overclocking it.
Also, don't really plan on that since the best Ryzen 3k overclocks are like +200MHz (~5% up, on about 4% of chips). AMD is binning these things within an inch of their life and using XFR to get whatever else is there.

I do feel somewhat bad for Bioware that I only reinstalled Anthem to see it not stuttering, and then immediately removed the game because it's not fun.

Not that bad, mind... just somewhat.
I'm really enjoying the new stuff personally. Found a group to play with and having a lot of fun.

I dunno I might go back into it. I liked the concept I just think EA pushed the game out a year too early.
I was just shocked that not only were my frame times consistent, but I think everything shot up 20 fps when I got my new CPU.

This Noctua box has some heft, lemme tell ya.

Where oh where has my UPS guy gone? Oh where oh where could he be? I want my new CPU so I can start building.
While I was waiting for my GPU I built the rest of my computer, and it actually was kinda fun because I could just take my time and not tear through it like a kid on Christmas morning. It also helped that the case I got was like an grown-up version of an Erector Set and was really fun to tear down and put back together.

Yeah that Noctua is half the size of my Pure Rock and is 1.66 pounds vs the Pure Rocks 1.25.

IT HAS ARRIVED! It's also 4pm and I'm not about to start building this while still at work. Time to load up everything and bring it home to get started on my NEW BUILD!
I'm curious to hear your opinion on building in the 275R.
I was thinking of getting that case at one point.

jungleroomxIt's never too many graves, it's always not enough shovelsRegistered Userregular
The 275R reminds me a lot of my P350X.
Man I should totally fire up Cities Skylines tonight and see if the loading time has improved as much as other CPU-heavy games I have (Civ 6, Stellaris).
That is the CPU and motherboard I got, except I got the non-wifi version. I kinda wish I had gotten the wifi version now, despite hating the antenna setup, but a Wifi 6 PCIE card is like $30 (and a newer standard) so it's not that big of a deal.

AHHHH. Now things make a bit more sense. It kinda felt like we were starting to push off a plateau that my 970 + [email protected] have been comfortable on for so long I thought we'd never move off of it.
Hm. Amazon doesn't let you search via panel, but Newegg does. Going 144 Hz, 2560x1440 (2K), Freesync + Gsync (I think the search for this is OR not AND sadly), VA or IPS, gives me a page of results, and a lot of those monitors are familiar from my Amazon searches. I don't recognize Viotek or AOC - think I've seen AOC at the local office store or grocery store? - but doing a search suggests they're not fly by night AliExpress type stuff. (Maybe. Viotek's website uh... yeah.) I'm guessing the "gaming" ones with XTREME plastic angles and RGB are probably mostly marketing and can be skipped in lieu of "mainstream gaming" ones?

The very real next standard is going to be 4K60 with really granular HDR local dimming. Right now we're in the middle of another LED/PLASMA/720/1080/BLURAY/HD-DVD clusterfuck where all these competing standards and tech are fighting it out. I don't think 8k becomes the norm in this, but I can definitely see 4k doing so.
I'd say in another few years the HDR local dimming matrix will be small enough and have good enough response that it will be worth getting, and in the next 5 it'll be a defacto standard.
So. Buy a good monitor and hope my GTX 970 can handle it for a while, or wait till I have a 1440p video card and get a monitor that'll support it later?

I'm a proponent of buying a great monitor now and living with it until you have a gpu that can push it.
I'd venture to guess most people spend most of their time outside of a game and a good quality monitor is worth it 100% of the time.

I guess if worse came to worse I could just run 1080p games in windowed mode until I have a better GPU.
Is going from 144hz to 100hz noticable? They have a 34" 1440p ultrawide that I just measured and noticed I could fit perfectly on my desk.

I wonder how far the monitor makers will push resolution, will it actually be beyond what 99% of the population can resolve with their eyes? Will there be an arms race for bionic eyes and higher resolution displays? The mind boggles.
I just want an ultra widescreen 1440p display. That would make me happy.

This is the one I'm looking at right now, it hits both, but it's $600, and I don't know if my GTX 970 can handle it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HZSBW7V/
I presume downscaling it to 1080p or slowing it to 60Hz won't cause it problems?
This is the one a local buddy has: https://www.amazon.com/PG248Q-G-SYNC-Esports-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01M4II4M4
Which is $375, but is smaller, a higher refresh rate (180Hz), and 1080p. He says dark colors and shadows aren't great on it, however.
This is what I think is a newer version of the above: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MSB4X9G/
Which is 1080p and 144Hz. I don't know what the diff between the VG and PG product lines are.
A friend on Discord said to go this one -- an ultra-wide 35", 120Hz, 1440p UWQHD: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-AG352UCG6-Monitor-3440x1440-DisplayPort/dp/B07LCX18MW/
It doesn't seem like there are many Ultra-Wides that are 144Hz. Here's an MSI one... https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Non-Glare-Ultra-Wide-Resolution/dp/B07V4H1FLF/
There's also MSI that have a 1440p that they call 2K (or, uh, is that something different than 1440p?) -- https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Non-Glare-Adjustment-Optix-MAG271CQR/dp/B07RPFZPS9/
LG has some ultrawides... https://www.amazon.com/LG-34GL750-B-Inch-Ultragear-Compatible/dp/B06XFXX5JH/
Good to know. Maybe I should wait to upgrade the monitor until I have a video card that can handle 1440p.
