My Sony PS3 headset will not work with my PC - Bluetooth issue?

BlindZenDriverBlindZenDriver Registered User regular
So I found my old PS3 headset and wanted to use it to Skype on my PC, but my PC can not find the headset and it ought to be so simple. Maybe there is something I don't know about Bluetooth or some other trick?

The headset is this one:

My PC is a normal Windows 10(64 bit) PC and it has a no-name Bluetooth USB dongle that works fine with a old Nokia BH-105 bluetooth headphone. The Sony headset works fine with my PS3 and also with my phone, an LG V30+.

Can it be that the headset is like using a new version of Bluetooth that my no-name Bluetooth dongle, when trying the PC never recognizes that the PS3 headset is there so I never even get to pairing. The headset is years old, but still... Any tips are welcome.

I'll bet that headset uses a non-standard Bluetooth configuration, or an old one. Probably not compatible with your computer's Bluetooth antenna either way

    Thank you for your input.

I have done a bit more research and following this guide my no-name Bluetooth dongle should support Bluetooth version 4.0, with Bluetooth supposed to be backwards compatible that then also mean prior versions are covered.

Main thing is I got it working. Turns out that in Windows the PS3 headset is just listed as "Wireless headset" and it somehow paired without me ever activating the pairing in Windows, so when I did ask Windows to pair with a device the headset did not show up as it was already paired. So silly me, but Windows could also have been more helpful :?

    I'm glad it worked!

Just so you know, when Bluetooth says it's "backward compatible" that can be bullshit. I run into it a lot with Bluetooth hearing aides but other devices can have the same issue. Sometimes it's Bluetooth version X but you must have their little dongle thing to make it work.
