Look at me. Look how evil i am as i kill my own mans. HA-HA-HA-HA SO EVIL HA-HA-HA-HA
That's a fairly accurate characterization up until
his death. Which i am informed won't stick.
Sure he might have further characterization in background materials, later flashbacks, or whatever, but if it's not onscreen, it does not exist.
The two main things (beyond petty cruelty) Zenos has going on are how he is bored because "nobody can challenge him", and his "hunt".
What does he do almost all of the expansion? Sit on his ass.
Zenos was a boring cardboard cutout of a villain.
That has been done dozens of times before, and often much better.
That could have been replaced with a random bureoucrat filing a requisition form for a tank.
Oh look Ran'jit popped up again and he did nothing in the actual fight but suddenly he's breaking free and look he's cosplaying zenos by pointlessly killing off his own man because said man had the audacity to try and strike a deal when we're all in trouble i'm literally scowling anytime boring ass mc-diet zenos pops up
Well, considering how
boring and pointless i found Zenos
It seems i will in for a treat.
Well
Fortunately Ran'jit is a minor part of the expansion as a whole which is otherwise fantastic - it's just that whenever he shows up they fucking shove him right in your face, so it always seems like he's a more prominent annoyance than he actually is.
Not like Zenos who is basically the centerpiece of that entire expansion, so you can't really excise that limb quite as easily.
I've never understood the eyepatch on the Black Mage AF1 armor. And then they brought the eyepatch back again for Shadowbringers. And I still don't get it.
Are all Black Mages blind in one eye? Does closing one eye help you shoot spells better? Like... why?
And anyway, I'm still using the glamour set that Lyna gave me. Level 79 and rockin' the official Crystarium guard uniform. Of course, once I hit 80 and finish my role and job quests, I am going to be rockin' the dancer AF armor.
And a question for those of you who are glamour experts - I've recently started dabbling in Machinist, and I have this idea in my head of a miq'ote female cowgirl. Any suggestions for glamour pieces I should look at to put together a cowgirl outfit for when I'm a MCN?
Look up the anemos glamours on the market board.
Nice, yeah, that's a pretty good set. I bet Eureka gear is probably pretty expensive on the Market Board.
Do people still go to Eureka? I unlocked it but never went there even one time. I don't even know how to get there! But maybe I could farm it up for myself?
it's not super doable solo at the moment but the devs have indicated that they intend to change that soonish
Those glamours might still be super cheap on the market though, a lot of them were like 1k gil each before the expansion.
despite the name, the anemos glamour gear drops from hidden chests in palace of the dead so the market is usually pretty well supplied with it and it's not expensive. I dunno if you can get the same stuff from eureka areas, I've barely touched eureka.
Ran'jit's reason for being is a lot better than Zenos'. It's just that, mechanically, he's exactly the same - invincible and super strong for no discernible reason until the plot decides it's his time to die - which is super frustrating. I mean, we get the tiniest of hints - his blood dragon pet/weapon - but nothing regarding his strength is actually explained.
It just all feels really DragonBall, which is decidedly not a good thing, IMO. And, even worse, in Ran'jit's case (like Donnicton said) they already had two creepy characters that could've filled that role in a much better way.
Like, keep Ran'jit, but make him dangerous because he's smart. He can direct the Jongleurs - now the muscle - to harry the heroes.

I did not like Zeno's until the end of Stormblood. Mostly because he implicates some neat stuff the Echo could do with his Resonance.
Sometimes this game just slaps you in the face with cultural disonance.

So we learn that Yotsuyu was sold to a brothel (i think, might have been just escort service but i doubt it) by her father.
And nobody so much as comments about the profession of the man who bought her.
So presumably buying and selling people, family, was perfectly legal.
And Hien, the oh so likable Hien goes "not my place to judge".
Dude, you are the ruler of this nation, whose job is it to judge if not yours?

I really wish Alphinaud would stop acting like everyones boss.
I've never been a fan of him to begin with, but having him suddenly start yelling orders makes me like him even less.
Yotsuyu's comeback. She and Gosetsu dying as Doma (Castle) literally crushes them was pitch perfect. He was crushed by his duty, she by her hatred. Both die together, but one is selfish, the other selfless. And then they fuck it up by trying to make her this tragic figure, and it simply doesn't work. It's just stupid and hokey.
Sometimes less is more. And there were plenty of other ways to get Al to the Burn.

And on top of all of that
It kinda makes Doman culture in general, and Hien in specific look worse.
Selling (or buying) people into prostitution is not something that should get a pass with "not my place to judge".
Gosetsu had a perfect ending.
They should have let him have it.

I'm surprised the empire has military issue katanas.

Not much.
He kills a bunch of Domans from like 100 yards away with his sword, walks to them and picks up a katana and then walks off.
Leaving the person whose memory we are seeing practicly swooning.
Doing the raid questline in Kugane now.

Story is nice and interesting so far (only done the first raid).

Yeah, it's actually worse.
Sometimes i fucking hate the writers of this game.
Just finished the Stormblood content! Turns out that when a friend buys a house, theres a lot of crap to do, which cuts into game time! While waiting to get some time to complete the story together, I had actually leveled to 76 on my DK just doing the leveling, 50/60/70, and trial queues.
My thoughts:
Holy crap do Ascians love the sound of their own voices. Even more than I had thought before. Its probably a bit of just powering through the last 2(or 3?) patches, but so many soliloquies! Especially that Solus/third ascian name that I don't remember.
I mean, maybe they were laying the groundwork for Shadowbringers and these will be answered there, but I feel they planted some seeds that they never returned to? That Black Rose chemical, they said would be ready for the Emperor's attack (even after the sabotage by the Black Wolf), but nothing ever came of it. I don't understand what the purpose of Elidibus occupying Zenos' body is (or why Solus was hiding from Elidibus in that scene where Solus reveals himself to the audience (he's hiding behind the throne).
And some of the events while the Scions were getting Called were kind of weird. Like, Krile coming in only after everyone except you and Alisaie were Called. And Alisaie was all like, "I didn't want to bother you in Eureka", because you know, its just that all the Scions are getting Called, its no big deal? Seemed really weird.
All in all, I'm not sure I really liked the post-launch Stormblood storyline all that much. The last couple patches seemed to work well as setup to whats coming in Shadowbringers, but the stuff that I did since I came back (the Yotsuyu "redemption" arc in particular) really fell flat with me.
But here comes Shadowbringers!

They cover Black Rose more later.
Elidibus took Zenos' body for a few reasons - his body was a powerful vehicle in its own right, and for political reasons. If word went out that the invincible Zenos yae Galvus died on the field, it would plunge the empire into civil war again(it was already coming off of the heels of a civil war triggered by Solus' "death"). Thus the illusion that the prince was still alive needed to be kept.
I think him coming out from behind the throne was just for dramatic effect, but Solus does have his own plans that don't involve Elidibus.
People were talking (last week I think?) about losing momentum in the middle of Shadowbringers. I didn’t have that experience, but I just got to the end of it and
the last zone is a huge brick wall. You build up all this momentum climaxing at Mount Gulg and things are wrapping up, and then it’s like “here, have a huge zone with a few more hours of backstory on the Ascians.” It sucked my will to play.
Bonus points for gating the story behind the role quest I had done none of by that point. That was a kick in the balls as well.

I think they probably could have done that without introducing another full sized zone that I had to unlock aether currents in.
It takes, what, 10-20 minutes to get all the currents there? I found about half of them without even using the compass. A lot of them are around MSQ areas. Just gotta be observant and poke around a little.

I hate this quest at a conceptual level.
It's stupid, it is pointless, it forces us to act as a servant to some random selfish asshole.
And we are forced to do it if we want to gain access to content, the whole damn thing has nothing to do with the raids as far as i can tell, It's just there to waste your time.
Atleast when
you were forced to act as a servant to Magnai
There was some story reason for it.
Even if i found the reasons flimsy and ridiculous.
When some selfish ass demands you go fetch them a bottle of ancient expensive wine from the other end of the world, the proper response is "fuck no you moron" not "yes sir, thank you sir, with pleasure sir".
Truth be told i also found the quest chain relating to (Stormblood alliance raid.)
The actor and his wife fetching them bacon and wine to be beyond tiresome and i wanted to stab both of them in the teeth for the way they were acting to my character. The only saving grace is that doing all the stupid quests relating to them offers an amusing scene and a title.
I would not really mind (well, i would, but not as much) if it was optional.
But it's not. Not really.
It's part of a chain, and not even its own chain, but inserted in the middle of another.
Some people may see this a lighthearted jokey episode.
Me, i see it as the writers laughing at you.
I love stupid feast-getting, wine-frauding comedy capers
I hope the MSQ in the next expansion is just 100 hours of scouring 6 new zones for the ingredients needed to throw Gegeruju's biggest feast ever

I mean, the quest line kind of introduces more of Dalmasca into the overall game by reenforcing it with our PTSD friend. I thought it was a nice touch up and follow through with that character that everyone wants to skip from 2.0.
I was able to put together the anemos set, and now I'm a real cowgirl. Thanks for the suggestion!
I've been leveling machinist this afternoon, and I've got a question!
I do not understand the purpose of the ability "Gauss Shot."
It has a potency of 150. Right now at 35, my #1 combo ability, "Split Shot" has a potency of 160, and it adds heat. Why would I ever want to shoot Gauss Shot over just starting a new combo? My 3 hit combo seems like a way better investment of the global cooldown. I can't figure out when or under what circumstances I would ever want to use this move. Surely I'm missing something.
if you mean gauss round, it's an off-global cooldown ability, meaning it's still useable during the time after pressing a button when most of your buttons are locked out for a couple seconds. You are meant to press it during the cooldown between other shots when you have charges of it available.
So you go like split shot > gauss round while your buttons are greyed out > slug shot > etc. I think every job has a few buttons that ignore the global cooldown like that.
It'll also start to make more sense once you get Wildfire at 45, which does damage based on how many other skills you landed within the Wildfire window. Get a good Overheat lined up with Wildfire and Heat Blast + Gauss Round does you a damage. Bonus points if you get to 80, my understanding is that Automaton Queen contributes to wildfire. (autoturret does not)
My favorite characters are the ones who don’t treat the WoL as some kind of deity.
It’s why I like the new dynamic of the scions without Minfilia. It feels more like a group of friends who know how to keep it light.
Also, at this point it’s pretty well established that while the WoL is a talented fighter, their other skills can sometimes be lacking. So when there’s a task that doesn’t involve fighting, it makes sense for your character to get the menial tasks.
Well, they've also done a good job of characterizing the other Scions with various skills that they have. They are all talented at combat and murder. But they each also bring other things to the table as well.
Alphinaud is a natural orator and diplomat.
Allisae is fiery and brash, and speaks her mind. She acts as the conscience of the group.
Y'shtola is the aether expert, and also she continually puts Thancred in his place and calls Thancred on all his shit.
Thancred is the loner and spy of the group who prefers to work undercover and take dangerous missions behind enemy lines. He also has the biggest heart, even if he tries to hide it.
Urianger is a historian, scholar, and student of every book ever written.
My favorite characters are the ones who don’t treat the WoL as some kind of deity.

And when we're doing something important, with our supposed friends, that might make sense.
My issue is that we are constantly made to act like servants to whoever.
I have heard mixed messages about whether queen contributes to wildfire or not
It does not, during Wildfire you just need to spam Heat Blast and weave in Ricochet / Gauss Round to avoid overcapping
Max wildfire is 6 stacks. Five heat blasts and one other weaponskill. There was speculation on if Queen counted because its attacks are labelled weaponskills, but no, they do not.

I loved that last bit but also

I think they probably could have done that without introducing another full sized zone that I had to unlock aether currents in.

It's stupid, it is pointless, it forces us to act as a servant to some random selfish asshole.
And we are forced to do it if we want to gain access to content, the whole damn thing has nothing to do with the raids as far as i can tell, It's just there to waste your time.
Atleast when
Even if i found the reasons flimsy and ridiculous.
When some selfish ass demands you go fetch them a bottle of ancient expensive wine from the other end of the world, the proper response is "fuck no you moron" not "yes sir, thank you sir, with pleasure sir".
But it's not. Not really.
It's part of a chain, and not even its own chain, but inserted in the middle of another.
Some people may see this a lighthearted jokey episode.
Me, i see it as the writers laughing at you.
I hope the MSQ in the next expansion is just 100 hours of scouring 6 new zones for the ingredients needed to throw Gegeruju's biggest feast ever

So you go like split shot > gauss round while your buttons are greyed out > slug shot > etc. I think every job has a few buttons that ignore the global cooldown like that.
My issue is that we are constantly made to act like servants to whoever.
Or atleast that is what he game keeps telling me.
It does not, during Wildfire you just need to spam Heat Blast and weave in Ricochet / Gauss Round to avoid overcapping
My Steam
Max wildfire is 6 stacks. Five heat blasts and one other weaponskill. There was speculation on if Queen counted because its attacks are labelled weaponskills, but no, they do not.
