They basically wanted a coin that celebrated us leaving the EU. The date is what matters. The message is just the guff that allows them to think it's acceptable.

If they could have gotten away with something more jingoistic as the message, they would have. Even if it was just the date and nothing else.

Another reason to vote for yes in 2021. Those stupid coins will go out of circulation up here when we replace the pound with the Scottish pound.

Seriously though they got a cheek if they send those coins up here en masse instead of just appearing through osmosis.

The Tories definitely seem to be in please the rock solid base of ignorant arseholes because we're having an election soon mode. Scream TOUGH ON CRIME at the tops of their voices and get that familiar Tory voting machine of thick middle aged wankers in frothing form.

Caroline Lucas wants an all female emergency cabinet to sort out brexit because "women have a different perspective and can cooperate with each other in a crisis".

I'm not sure where to start. Brushing aside to inherent sexism there that is precisely the sort of idea that will push back credibility the greens have been starting to earn. I've never been a fan of "X only shortlists" because aside from the fact I don't think it's democratic for the government to provide me with a list of candidates I'm allowed to vote for based on physical characteristics, it's the sort of move that rallies conservatives and generates worse counter reactions. Christ even Dianne Abott thinks it's a shit idea.

The Greens have some great policies and then some other policies that make you roll your eyes like you're listening to a community centre discussion about how quinoa and homeopathy are a good substitute for an epidural.

I mean, I would take an all-horse cabinet over the one we have now, but this doesn't seem a very serious or useful idea.

To be clear, this was originally designed as a limited run of 10,000 commemorative coins (just £10 each! Bargain!). Still terrible, but limited to ripping off the people who really believe in brexit, so I can mark it off as a brexit tax and ignore it. It's Javid who wants to produce millions of the things and force us to use them.

Shit like this makes me wonder if we're looking at a political version of The Producers, where everyone's trying to do everything wrong, and somehow coming out ahead (or at least, not fucking up badly enough to be stopped).

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

some uh interesting choices in there

    - big nic isnae an mp for starters
    - heidi allen + anna soubry were/are all in on changeuk which was not, let us say, a demonstration of fantastic political nous
    - yvette cooper, why? shes not even in the shadow cab. why not diane abbott? or even dawn butler, shadow sec for women and equalities seems more thematic if youre proposing an all-woman gnu cabinet
    - justine greening has literally voted multiple times in favour of the wa, seems an odd choice for what i presume is meant to be a remain cabinet
    - sylvia bloody hermon? an independent unionist? is this just a 'collect them all' type deal?

also their environmental voting records are a mixed bag at best, which seems odd for a proposal coming from the green party

It's a stupid idea and exactly the kind of idea that at an election the Tories can hammer away at. "Don't vote Lib Dem because you're voting Green!". All of a sudden the vote is split even more and Tories win through attrition.

I have only just noticed that the new UKIP leader is called Richard Braine.

Yes, that's Dick Braine. Just outstanding work all round, guys.

Also I note with passing interest ex-UKIP consultant, thug, convicted fraudster and all-around human-shaped pile of vomit Tommy Robinson is complaining someone in prison fooled him into eating a turd made to look like a Twix. Those merry jokesters in Cell Block B are at it again.

Maybe, but then they were stupid to not think of the counterattacks. The Tories have won two elections by saying "Not Corbyn". The voting base is already heavily split between Tory and anyone else, and Labour has made it worse by being the only viable part and also refusing to have any actual verbally communicated policies. People are already forced to choose "Party that could actually win, versus parties we want to actually win", which alone only helps the Tories.

Pre-Brexit reminder: It's the 50 years anniversery of the "Battle of the Bogside" / 1969 Derry riots.

I'm sure the Tories and Johnson in particular will be inspired by this occasion to put in some more work on their (post)Brexit planning.

This is show them that we really mean it when we say we're leaving on the 31st.

Despite us still paying in to the EU.

British diplomats will pull out from the EU’s institutional structures of power in Brussels within days, under plans being drawn up by Downing Street.

In an attempt to reinforce the message that the UK is leaving the EU by 31 October, “do or die”, the UK will stop attending the day-to-day meetings that inform the bloc’s decision-making.

From the perspective that "the legality of what we're doing doesn't matter, the courts can't stop us in time" is not a good look when engaged in active litigation over the matter

doesnt seem very left at all tbh - soubz? allen? swinson? cooper is deffo in the more rightwards end of labour - thornberry less so but shes not exactly 'socialisme ou barbarisme' is she?

  • 101101 Registered User regular
That she's asked a variety of MP's is neither here nor there really.

Caroline is the one suggesting it and the one being focused in the media as a result.

This is a Caroline/greens/left/anti-brexit idea and will be seen as such.

And hey, I'm all on board for stopping Brexit

But 'lol looney left' is all I can muster at this proposal

Being fair, I can understand some of the names at least. Allen and Soubry are both outspoken and strongly anti-Brexit, both resigned from their party on that issue. Yvette Cooper has been one of the most effective opponents of brexit - certainly far more effective than the Labour front bench. Unlike them she has been actively building support for and tabling anti-brexit amendments. As for Sylvia Hermon, she’s also the only non-DUP MP from NI that will actually turn up. Given that NI is kind of an issue with brexit, it certainly makes sense. Politically a bit more towards the left from what I remember, hard to place though. Voted for the WA due to the backstop.

While the overall idea is poor, I don’t really have an issue with some of the names.

the party of "law and order", yes.
the one that's suggesting, "hey, maybe let's just ignore Parliament".

Since right-wingers take their talking points from Murdoch rags, which say about the same things and use the same types of euphemisms everywhere no matter the country, they probably mean they're "law and order" in the same way Republicans are - it means they're all about racism. Tory voters might not like the thought of dying of lack of medicine, food, and clean water, but they hate them non-English more! Go along with abolishing Parliament because throwing out those people is more important.

So I'm not particularly familiar with how GDP is calculated, but wouldn't people buying more than usual to stockpile increase GDP? Or does people buying presumably foreign/EU items at a local grocery store not contribute to GDP because GDP is only for stuff produced/services rendered inside the country? Or if the stockpiling did contribute and GDP still went negative despite the spending, are things even more grim than they seemed? Or would that kind of stockpiling not really even factor in to something like GDP because it's so small-scale? I'm somewhat confused.
