Hey guys, I have some videos on my laptop that i'd like to watch on all the glory that my work camp's big ass 50 zillion inch hi def widescreen can muster. What kind of cable do i need?

Connections on the back of the tv are:

HDMI
and something green, like "y - video"
and some other junk

my dell precision has USB, standard VGA etc.

What the dilly yo? It's only DVD quality video, so i don't need crazy hi def, just to be able to watch/hear it.

Also, the TV is a hitachi 55VS69A

I run a standard VGA to VGA cable from my laptop / desktop to the back of my Vizio 42" Plasma TV. This allows for a high def image to be sent.

If your TV doesnt support VGA in, I imagine you can get a VGA to RCA cable of somesort, although that will definetly limit the resolution you get to 460i.

Sound is another issue, I just run it directly from my computer sound system. It works well enough for me not to mess around and figure something else out.

You will need an adapter of some kind. The best one for you, since your TV has HDMI, is a DVI-to-HDMI adapter (or cable).

When shopping, don't pay more than $5/foot for cables, it's a digital signal and doesn't need super-gold-plating or any of that nonsense.

Edit: oh and you still need sound, so you also need a headphone-jack to RCA (yellow/red cable) splitter or cable.

I can never seem to find a decent resolution when I connect my laptop to my 37'' HDTV. Would that sort of thing vary from model to model or is there kind of a standard one that works?

This might not be the best idea, seeing as he did not say his laptop had a DVI port.

Try 1280x720 and 1366x768 (assuming they are available as choices). Unless it's 1080p, in which case 1920x1080 is your best bet.

According to the Hitachi Specs, this TV has the following:
    Inputs/Outputs
    • CableCARD™ Interface:....................1
    • HDMI™ High-Definition
    Multimedia Interface:4 ......................1
    • Wideband Component
    Video Inputs:.................................... 2
    • S-Video Inputs:..................................2
    • AV Inputs (Rear/Side):...................4/1
    • Antenna Inputs:.................................1
    • Center Channel Input:.........All Inputs
    (L/Mono)
    • Optical Digital Output:......................1
    • Fixed/Variable Audio Output:...........1

Your best bet, in your case, would be an S-Video hookup, since there's no real good way to go from VGA to HDMI (at least, none that I've heard of. It can go the other way, but I've never seen it go from VGA to HDMI). What model laptop do you have? My Dell Inspiron can output S-Video.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

You might be out of luck, dude. Your TV has surprisingly few useful input connectors, and your laptop sounds like it doesn't have anything usable either. You're certain you don't have an S-Video or DVI output on your laptop? It would have to be pretty old not to have DVI-out.
