ANAmal.net: Someone dropped these bad boys on Goonhammer HR Director and Known Englishman One_Wing, and you love to see it. This is the rudest shit to ever happen in a game store that didn’t involve someone getting dragged out by their mom.

TheChirurgeon: These are amazing. Where did these even come from?

ANAmal.net: So apparently these were custom-made by some of the ETC (European Team Championship) teams specifically to fuck with the British players. Which is incredible as an own, but also sucks because I want to buy them and I can’t.

TheChirurgeon: I love these on a conceptual level. As soon as these come out at the game table against a Brit, you have immediately colonized a space in their heads to live rent-free forever.

ANAmal.net: It honestly doesn’t matter how these things roll, you cannot lose a game where you deploy this kind of savagery.

TheChirurgeon: This would be like if I went to play a game in the UK and Artum just had a bunch of dice where instead of 6s, they had statistics about child poverty in the United States.

After I got some black legion dice I decided to stop buying GW dice entirely and just custom ordered some nice grey and gold ones from Chessex.

I love the idea behind all the GW dice I own, but most are impossible to read and have staggeringly poor balance.

The exception are squig dice which are impossible to read, but completely awesome to roll.

So Vallejo Black is awesome. It's like Abaddon Black, only it's coverage is insane. I've never had to give more than one coat with it. It's like a sharpee marker for your paintbrush. If I had to suggest a single paint to Citadel-exclusive users, it would be Vallejo black (and the Liquitex Acrylic stuff like Fluid Medium and Drying Retarder and the like, but they're technically not paint).

But I've been trying to find something slightly less black without luck, with the thought that I'd like to go very close to black and then Nuln Oil on my Stygies VIII robes and they'd look better than just solid black. I have some Dark Reaper coming (it's not available locally so had to go through Amazon), alongside Corvus Black (which apparently is ever so slightly not pure black) and the 3 Gemstone paints like Waystone Green for my custodes. I do have Vallejo "Black Grey" which is a bit too bright, I think.

Apparently though, uh, Germans got the whole "Black" thing down pat:

    fv9bly18kgy0.png
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/bzpkzb/anyone_know_a_similar_paint_for_this_kind_of/

Although apparently you can do something pretty good, even though I kinda find it "tron line-y", with Vallejo Black -> Vallejo Dark Grey -> Vallejo Natural Grey -> Citadel Ulthuan Grey.

    gcruv5wbqtfb.png
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/eqi53i/blood_angels_champion/

So Vallejo "German Grey" might be the way to go -- it's part of their "German Military Uniform" line. I could only find it on ebay at a reasonable price, but got two pots coming.

time to crash, the dawn is up, the sun gleems out glorious ps4 sunbeams and i can trade those sunbeams and do whatever i want with them.

So playing a game tomorrow to begin learning the possessed bomb. There are about 40 versions of this. The key though is a deathstar of 18-19 possessed with two apostles, a master of possession, at least one sorc, and then other stuff like greater possessed or pox bringers from nurgle daemons or whatever. This list produces all sorts of weird stuff. From a -4 to lord discordant to -3 to hit possessed that double move, do mortal wounds on 6s to wound and wound everything in the game on a 2 or 3 with a pile of attacks with lots rerolls. It is one of the big 3 lists for LVO. Or the idea is. Also the fact that possessed are now the scary unit theyey are in the fluff makes me happy.

    Created with BattleScribe

This is my take very much based on whats built and a lot of whats painted. Kind of want to use the last 8 points to throw in some combi-bolters.

Discordants are the front with the big engines. Possessed are safe thanks to concealed for a turn or two. The pros are using a nurgle battalion with nurglings to make it even easier to guard them.

Back line are the CSM and the cultist as needed. Oblits can come down turn 2-3 or as needed to clear something. They get bonuses from all the buffs that possessed get too.

Its an interesting list that requires a lot of good positioning but if the possessed get in it is game over a lot.

Another thing folks are doing is bringing the contorted epitome either via summoning or points and using the leadership debuffs (-1 from itself, and -1 from the possessed if you give them the banner) to keep everyone in combat.

I could link the Glasshammer/D6Evolution video with Mani but its like 45 minutes. So basics.

    Possessed:
1.9" pre game move, kept out los.
2.-1 to hit from Alpha Legion
3.Concealed-2cp: This unit cannot be targeted unless it is nearest visible unit. So turn 1 immune to fire especially stuff like thunderfire.
4.Buffs: -1 to hit from Miasma of pestilince, -1 to hit from the Dark Apostle, +1 to wound from the dark apostle, +1 to invuln saves MoP, Reroll 1s to hit and wound from the MoP. With a few other buffs you can get a unit that is str 6/7, +2 to wound, unmodified 6s cause mortal wounds, and dttfe on a 5+. All on T4 3+/4++ 2w bodies. Another key for this is good wrapping, a skill I am ehh at.

    Lord Discordant:
    1.-1 to hit from AL
2.-1 to hit from Warlord Trait
    3.-1 from Miasma
    4.-1 from Dark Apostle

Use this thing as the blocker for your possessed turn 1/2.

    Other bits:
1.Word bearers have a 1 cp stratagem that takes a failed cast and makes it an deniable success also a 1 cp guaranteed 6 on a save roll.
2.Malefic tome gives that sorc +1 to cast and 3 spells known
3.You can also turn the DP into a possessed if you want and there are buffs in WB for him that make him even scarier.

Its a lot but its really focused and not hard to track. Just overlapping buffs on a few units that can take and hold the middle of the board turn 1 on.

Because I’ve seen this question asked a few times here and in the painting thread, I did make a picture comparison of Abaddon right next to Corvus. Reposted here for your convenience:

It appears that I didn’t quite thin my coats enough, but the magnification also makes my cutting mat appear to be 60 grit sandpaper.

Re: GW dice, I get that they want to try and find a way to make their dice look fancy (so they can slap a $35 price tag on them), but jeeze dudes all anyone actually wants is a set of dice in their faction color with a faction logo on the 6, that is it.

Most longterm players probably have standard dice coming out of their ass due to all of the starters or GW boardgames that they buy, so I guess they're specifically targeting people who are willing to pay more for borderline unusable dice that are mostly for show.

I actually think there shouldn't be any symbols on dice at all because there's so little consistency in whether those symbols wind up on the "1" or "6" face (or even both in the worst cases).

Just make numbered and readable dice in faction colours. This shouldn't be an awkward or difficult request.

Yeah, the eldar dice are nice. Got the fire dragons and swooping hawks. Nice colours and only a small symbol next to the numbers. Most readable ones of the bunch.

Scorpions and avengers seem okay, too, even if the numbers are a bit small compared to the aspect symbol. The banshee dice are just unreadable with their tiny numbers.

So got pummeled today though it was my fault more than the list. A bit of hot dice that both of us looked at going, wow. But it was good, I want him to play more.

Basically I had a good first turn charging and taking the middle of of the map but completely forgot about what the Armor of Russ does.

Yup. Well my 18 possessed instead of attacking first killing 2-3 characters and 5 wulfen all of them got to go first killing all but 5 of my possessed. Even with the -1 to hit and the 4++. Completely avoidable due to placement and my charge. Such is life.

Still I see the potential but also how badly it can lose with a few bad moves.

    Its a cool list though.

Funniest rolls where me getting 8 wounds on a flying fridge with my prince. He made 5 saves keeping it alive at 3 wounds. *sigh*

Not that I’m going to be playing in any tournaments soon, but generally what’s the ruling on 3rd party bits? I assume that complete 3rd party models like Artel W minis are probably not allowed, but what about bits like from Pop Goes the Monkey? Things like custom weapons and jump packs? I those in particular are modeled after the GW ones, so once they're painted up it might be difficult to distinguish them from any other conversion.

Last I heard the rule for tournaments was the model had to be 50% GW pieces at the least. Don't know if that is still true though.

You mean in like, GW stores? That's going to be up to the individual manager, but in all the ones I played in, if you don't mention it, nobody cares. I have a couple of commissars converted from non-GW models, and i just play them without going, 'hey, look at my awesome NON GW model.'

Anywhere else? Aside from playing at stores that probably sell some of that stuff, I can't imagine anyone having a reaction other than 'damn, nice conversion.'

If you're asking about in GW tournaments, IIRC models are supposed to be 100% GW, but they don't have an inspector going around, measuring finger angles on powerfists to confirm if it's from their kit. It's more egregious cases, like, how all of my vespid use Infinity models. That wouldn't fly, and would be casually obvious.

If you're asking about any other tournament, rules are going to be particular to the event, but they're probably looser.

TheChirurgeon: This would be like if I went to play a game in the UK and Artum just had a bunch of dice where instead of 6s, they had statistics about child poverty in the United States.

    holy cow

I actually played in the ETC tournament these are from. And yes, the guy who owned them, total asshole.
I just got to scratch my head at the two commenters. Like how fragile do they have to be that they think this is something that will automatically throw people off their game? My reaction would be 'all right, you're obviously an asshole, I guess I should keep my eyes open in case you try anything that actually affects the game...'

I guess I'd put that up there with the stories over the years of, 'guy's girlfriend was watching the game, and it totally blew my concentration whenever she leaned over the table.' Like, there;s not enough mental capcaity to split attention to notice attractive woman AND continue to play?

    *edit*
As for GW specialty dice, they're not hard to read but that's only after you take the time to look at them and figure them out. They are neither internally consistent with how they do things set to set, not do they follow standard numbering conventions. Which makes them terrible gaming dice, because even when you can recognize them at a glance, it's still not easy to do when there's a large number of them on the table. They're good as markers and counters, terrible for actual game play.

When I took my Eldar army to play at a GW store this last summer {I took the pistol case they have lived in since high school and a long card box full of jet bikes} The Store manager stopped the game since he A had not seen some of that stuff in person and had to get out a master catalog to show someone they were legit models of a different age
It was the RT era eldar dreadnaught and eldar robot I use as a dread the tripod heavy weapons The guardian with the power sword and others
    He took the master catalog out to prove they were GW models to a person watching us play [I have a lot of the wild rider era jetbikes and a few metal ones as well}

The Ritual of the Damned is certainly giving me more motivation to actually finish and start playing with a full 40k army (I've only been playing Kill Team and BSF so far). I saw scans of the final ruleset, and together with a few different podcasts started a little theory-crafting and (wish)list-building. I'm really excited about all the Ravenwing buffs, and especially about Land Speeders believe it or not. 77 points for 6 Assault Cannon shots + 3 Heavy Bolter shots at +6" range and -2 AP seems decent to me at killing all sorts of stuff. Combining that with the Talonmaster and one of the new warlord traits means no to-hit penalty with movement + the Lt aura. Sammael on a jet bike brings the necessary reroll hits aura, and probably some attack bikes with multi-meltas or black-knights with assault plasma rounds to finish off the nice Ravenwing roving motorcycle gang. They'll struggle against a knight, but that's what Deathwing Knights are for, and I think I can fit it all into two battalions with min squads of intercessors & scouts (for early objective placement and/or deep strike denial). This seems like a start:
Detachment 1: Ravenwing Battalion (Ravenwing Attack Squadron)
HQ: Talonmaster (warlord, impeccable mobility, Corvus Occulas)
    HQ: Sammael on Corvex
    Troops: 3x 5-man Scout squad w/heavy bolter
FA: 5x Ravenwing Land Speeders (assault cannon, heavy bolter)
    FA: Ravenwing Darkshroud (heavy bolter)
FA: Ravenwing Black Knights (sergeant +5 knights)

Detachment 2: Greenwing & Deathwing reserve
HQ: Regular Chaplain (new cool litany)
    HQ: Primaris Lieutenant w/SBR
Troops: 3x 5-man Primaris Intercessors w/stalker bolt rifles & grenade launchers
    Elite: 10x Deathwing Knights

    Pts: 2,000, 12 CP

The way I imagine things would go will be to keep the DWK in reserve, set my Greenwing down first and then build up the Ravenwing to go after the big threat units. The speeders can go 20" with a normal move, and the bikers can all advance without fear due to a combination of the Talonmaster's warlord trait and the Signal the Attack stratagem. This gives me a good 41"+ on my threat range with a lot of heavy weapon shots (with the limitation that it's mostly 1 damage weapons). On turn 2 I can get into charge range and use Combined Assault to bring my DWK onto the field. Assuming they make it into combat unscathed, I'll buff them with Fury of the First and have 36 Mace of Absolution attacks and 5 Flail of the Unforgiven attacks (rerolling 1s to hit & to wound). I'm not sure if that kills a knight, but it seems like it could. I bet that more Black Knights than Deathwing Knights would be a more efficient use of points, but I'll be damned if that doesn't seem as fun! That being said I've got no real experience so I'm happy to receive some feedback. I probably won't be ordering the models until the end of March at the earliest, so I've got plenty of time to theory-craft.

Edit: it looks like the BattleScribe data I was using is out of date: I’ve got a few more points to work with...

Edit 2: I was able to add 3 more Ravenwing Knights!

Are you missing a Strike Squad in your battalion? My brother also wants to play Grey Knights and we have no idea how to build them.

It's a Stronghold Assault Attacker detachment, not a Battalion. But the purifiers can become a white-headed 10-man strike squad in a pinch.
