Reinstalling XP questions

So in regards to the last thread I posted. It looks like I did get a bit of nasty malware. It looks to be some variant of this bastard. Even if I'm wrong about the malware, it has been far too long since my last reinstall of win XP anway. So I need a bit of advice for firing the ion cannon, so to speak, to exercise the ‘nuke it from orbit’ strategy. Unfortunately, since it’s been so long, I’m rather rusty when it comes to reinstalling the OS, and I was hoping I could get a bit of help.

I’ve got my win XP with SP2 install disk all ready to go. I've also got all of my software backed up and pertinent installers put aside for a fast rebuild once I get back into the OS, but I have a few driver related questions to ask. First, I’m running on a SATA WD Raptor, but only a single SATA drive at the moment. I’ve not set up a RAID, and when I was putting this machine together, I didn’t put a floppy drive in it. I recall reading that a floppy disk is needed to install some SATA drives. Do I need a floppy drive for SATA drive set up? Or is it just for RAID set up? I got it all running the first time without issue, so I was thinking that I’ll be okay, but I don’t want to jump in without being sure.

Second, how can I figure out what drivers are the best for my motherboard / chipset? I’m using an Abit AI7 board, but the drivers they have listed on their website seem like nonsense. Some of the drivers listed for my motherboard on Abit's website are VIA drivers, and it’s very clearly an Intel chipset on the board. The only Intel chipset drivers I can find seem wrong - The readme file indicates that it updates PCIe support, and my three-year old motherboard is AGP only, so I'm a bit wary of installing the wrong files.

Lastly, what’s the best way to get things security patched and tightened up ASAP so I can prevent viral infection? I’ve heard the record time between reinstall and infection is like 30 seconds, so I’d like to avoid that. I’m going to try to install Nod32, since NAV was worthless the last time around. Anyone have any opinions on Nod32 at all?

I’d appreciate any advice you could offer me on this, or any other things I may have overlooked in preparation of reformatting. Thanks a ton, H/A.

If you can't see any drives during setup, then you will have to put the drivers for your SATA controller on a floppy. RAID setup is done through the SATA controller itself, accessed from a prompt during/after POST but before the system boots any drives.

I can't tell you what drivers you should use for your motherboard without being able to see it. Use the drivers it shipped with to start with, then you can always roll them back if you mess it up.

Anti-virus software is a waste of time, memory and CPU cycles. The only time I have problems is when I get files at LAN parties, and in those instances I just whack them down with sysinternals stuff and safe mode.

You can slipstream your drivers onto your install CD with something like nlite. I made up an unattended install disc using that so all my required drivers and all the updates were auto-installed. In the long run it's less hassle than digging up a floppy drive and then manually installing a bunch of drivers.
