Apparently the "medieval outfit" was actually that of a samurai, not a knight.

Quebec police saying the motive does not appear to be religious/racial/etc. and that he had been planning this for a year and a half. (Article from Les Soleil (in French).)

Meanwhile, here in Manitoba, Pallister finally closed almost everything (except schools...) and banned social gatherings outside your household. Then before the day that would actually be implemented, he decided no no groups of 5 are fine. I fully expect the number of new cases to keep climbing because our provincial government refuses to do anything but half measures and people are stupid.

Yeah I'm pissed. Absolutely sick of Douggie having regular press conferences to announce he's doing jack shit or *lowering restrictions* while the numbers spiral out of control. At this point it's like hammering on the gas and being baffled your car isn't slowing down.

this is where I'm at as well, its always its concerning and the numbers are not moving in the right direction... so reluctant to take any actual action. Just trying to pass the buck to the local health authorities. IT's frustrating that we know the way to reduce cases is to do restrictions wide spread. it hurts in the short term but helps long term. they want to deny and get by with half measures that just seem to prolong the hardships, economic and health wise.

I had hope before october numbers would downward trend that I'd be able to visit family in the atlantic provinces for xmas, but that just seems so irresponsible to do now with all the cases.

its just shitty that there are no grown ups willing to do what works, and has been shown to work in other provinces.

BC is pretty bad right now, but kind of only the Fraser Valley? Which has more cases than all the other areas combined including Vancouver and The Island.

Th other day they banned in-home social gatherings and non essential travel but... restaurants are still open? And no mask mandate? And also they've refused to use the Covid Alert app because they want it to have more powerful contact tracing at the cost of privacy and they're replacing it with... nothing?

It's fucking maddening. They're pointing at people saying "do the right thing" but not actually helping.

Doug's game plan, so far as I can tell, is that he cannot under any circumstances do anything to help, since all the things you need to do to help are astoundingly anti-Conservative. Funding public health? Anti-Conservative. Funding public education? Anti-Conservative. Supplementing people's income? WAY anti-Conservative. So all these things that you need to do are things he cannot do, unless he wants to get raked across the coals by his base in a couple years. Especially considering that once that cat is out of the bag, it can be hard to stuff it back in. People might find out that they like having shorter wait times, smaller class sizes, and not feeling forced to continue to work for bad employers out of a sense of impending financial doom.

He's betting that it might not get that bad, and even if it gets pretty bad, he can pass that buck until a vaccine comes along. Then he can spring into action putting pandemic funds into buying and distributing the vaccine (which will go to Businesses, which means he's Making Jobs, what a strong leader!), and claim that because of his actions, Ontario has one of the best vaccine-distribution efforts anywhere, and will recover quickest, and boy howdy, wouldn't you like to vote for ol' Doug Ford again?

    Just watch for it.

I think this is both incredibly apt and honestly almost *too* generous. Doug Ford is an absolute incompetent whose sole focus right now is on business owners crying to him that he wants to save and be a hero by say, nonsensically opening dance studios while gyms are closed, while completely ignoring advisors in science and medicine telling him "no, seriously, it's going to get drastically worse in three weeks" because frankly they're downers

He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who is willing to plan ahead that far

The folks he's appointed to his ministries, like Lecce, those are the ones focused on the long con

And in the meantime the numbers are growing to the point where we are now projected to fucking have 6000 cases a day, OPTIMISTICALLY, in mid-December. Worse than Europe when we had the findings of their disasters right in front of us, pointing to what *not* to do.

Genuinely horrified at all this. We had a talk as a family after the numbers came out and decided we're not taking any more requests for our dog training company, and just finishing up our current bookings as they stand before relying on CRB for the winter. Not worth it.

Doug has consistently shown that his focus on, and great strength is, appealing to rural voters at the expense of urban ones. He may not be good at governing, but the man is _incredible_ at a very specific kind of campaigning, which is what he's doing now. Now, when it's a matter of life and death that we have someone in place who knows how to govern.

The fact that "campaigning" and "governing" are separate skills, but only one is useful to get into government and only the other is useful once you're _in_ government is one of the biggest problems I have with democracy, honestly.

(No idea how to fix it, it just upsets me, especially now, with so many lives on the line.)

I was listening to a Canadaland podcast specifically about Doug Ford (Wag the Doug), and one of the things they were talking about is not only did the Covid briefings turn into more generalized campaign-style announcements, but also they retain the veneer of authenticity by having the speakers take questions, even though they're completely in control of who gets to ask questions, and tend to choose friendlier outlets, and there's not really the same opportunity to follow up or clarify, the way there would be in a press scrum.

    Hello Canada Thread,

One of my family's christmas traditions is to have scones and croissants with clotted cream and jam for christmas breakfast. It is so tasty and I look forward to it every year.

I just learned that Canada blocked all importation of clotted/devon cream. I can't remember ever being so upset at the canadian government. (this is extreme hyperbole fyi).

Atlantic bubble is looking a little shaky this week. I know it's a matter of perspective and we're still doing very well, but going from 0 new cases for months to 11 yesterday in NS (44 active now) is at the least disappointing, and I'm worried now that we have community spread it's going to take off again. At the very least I'm reasonably confident that the provincial government will be prepared to lock things down again, but I was hoping we could avoid that.

Also, the warnings for potential exposure include both grocery stores within walking distance of my apartment, and a restaurant a block and a half away. I wasn't at any of them during the listed times (or at the restaurant at all), so I'm confident I haven't been exposed yet. That said, who knows how many people nearby were, so I'm going to operate on the assumption that all of my neighbours could be infected until further notice.
