The guiding lands as a gate for progression is not as cool
I think they should have been better at telling you "hey, now that you reached level X in this area, go back and go do this quest to unlock the next thing". My friend and I were trying to get the Yian Garuga unlock and we didn't know we had to go back and get an urgent quest for it in Seliana. Wasted an hour fighting more monsters instead, but eh.
The Guiding Lands aren't a terrible idea for part of the end game, but I agree they could have integrated it a little better with progression.
I am, in fact, trying to get the Yian Garuga unlock and it's one hell of a slog
get your ancient forest to level 3, then go back and talk to the field team leader in seliana. just hunt monsters with the forest icon next to them on the guiding lands map (you can see it while in the guiding lands), pick up tracks and signs of turf wars when you run into them. it only took us about 2 hours? ish. but then we kept hunting because we didn't realize we had to go back after hitting level 3.
I saw some pics of the Savage Deviljho armor for female hunters and that, that is just a straight visual downgrade compared to the alpha set for the regular pickle
i'm back to running it as or more often than hammer, where before iceborne i was mostly running hammer for anything
it's still a relatively squishy, high commitment weapon, but the improved mobility helps a lot, and ZSD is real fucken good now

Huh, I know it's the flagship here and everything but I didn't expect Velkhana to give me so much trouble, two carts and I almost ate a third for my troubles, I was really getting slapped all around the map! Fun fight though, visually it looks incredible.

i found it a lot more manageable once i switched over to a vaal/velkhana crit element set with the vaal swaxe
my hunt times are down to around 16 minutes
i think the ice resistance helps a lot at the bare minimum
I'm going to need to figure out items sooner or later, huh.
Like something to keep monsters from running me all over the map. Last night I literally spent more time chasing my first Tobi-Kadachi than I did fighting it.

I was using the Barioth set (with Resuscitate gemmed in), so my ice defense was actually pretty decent, though it may be rather lacking on the physical side! I'll probably aim to grind out the Valkhana armour set just cos it looks so fancy, though it seems to suffer from the traditional problem where the alpha set looks cooler whilst the beta set is probably more practical! If nothing else the longsword looks like it has a decent chunk of purple sharpness.

you can try flash pods when they're ready to run but a lot of times they'll go, hell or high water, even if you're actively hurting them
i had an elder dragon in iceborne carry me to the next zone during a ZSD
a lot of it boils down to hitting them hard enough that they only can go to a couple zones
savage deviljho is the most broken fight in the history of the universe
fuck all this
deviljho has been a stupid fight in every game. So has rajang. and i just hate fighting most of the elders. vaal hazak is fine i guess, but his gear is mostly only useful in fighting himself.

When they start changing zones you can cancel it by making the monster flinch. Special slinger ammo like piercing pods, scatternuts etc always cause the monster to flinch.
Lance is fine, though I find some attacks are tearing through my guard more and I am having to be more evasive.
The lance counter claw is fantastic but you need to watch your health because it will chip you even though your going through the animations.

I continue to really enjoy SnS, which I think this is the first time ever using it outside of a tutorial. Or maybe a couple hunts in Tri, where I realized the block let chip damage through, and moved to something else. Except now I really want to build the Rathian SnS and she will not drop a plate. Desire sensor, please.

Yeah, I'm really liking most weapons with shields right now. The only one I haven't really gotten the hang of is the lance, but SnS, gunlance, charge blade, heavy bowguns...love them all.
EDIT - I should mention, that's after getting at least a couple points into Guard.

my problem is a couple things
enemies move a lot more rather than standing there hammering the shield, so you end up having to move around a bunch, which burns stamina and creates openings and reduces DPS
blights are fuckin terrible to deal with and wildly more common
chip damage can be nasty even at guard 5
monster attack tempos are way higher and monsters can often follow up with an attack before the counter thrust goes off
lots of AoEs

SnS guard has always been your backup defense option over just getting out of the way since you have almost no animation lock. It's drastically better than actually eating a hit and comes up in no time.

I've been playing it like the shield doesn't work, except for the bash.

Yeah, lance has definitely been "nerfed" for MR with the points said by Elendil, we probably just got too used to the 100% damage reduction in the base game. There are some fights that are laughably easy with lance still, like Nargacuga.

Ugh, still working on debugging this random screen freeze I'm getting while playing games. Thankfully it didn't stop my from stoping a bunch of monsters yesterday though. My appreciation for LBG continues to grow. I've been having fun with sticky ammo 3 and just knocking everything out.
Zorah Magdaros is just a big ugly mess that stopped telling me what I was supposed to be doing and left me to just wander the big ugly landscape for like 5 minutes.
Made it to MR103 last night after killing the last last boss, so now I guess everything is unlocked. Saw a couple new monster variants already in joined games, but I need to do more grinding. I've been having decent luck with joining random Guiding Lands games, although last night we ended up 3-manning Kirin in a 4 player room because the fourth guy was literally just corpse-running the monster. I'm not sure he was even trying to get any hits in, but he died at least 20 times in a ~15 minute fight just respawning, running to the fight, and then carting. I would have preferred he just afk'd at camp, since the messages got super annoying. Not sure if it was some weird griefing attempt or he was just trying his best.
Just as a PSA, it turns out the single best skill you can get for Guiding Lands is Fortify. One 1-slot gem, and then cart yourself twice when you zone in gets you a +20% atk and +30% def buff for an hour. As far as I can tell, there is no downside past the first investigation that you turn in as it seems the reduced rewards don't apply beyond that. I was rocking 1400 atk (charge blade) and 1156 defense. It doesn't seem to renew after the hour, so I think you have to zone out and repeat, but I need to do some more testing.
That zinogre HBG looks so cool, so now I'm looking at HBG's and damnit, I just settled on using SnS this time around...
Why not both?

HBG is like the opposite of SNS, that's for sure.
If there's one thing I've learned during my replay of the game on PC, it's that my life has been made incredibly easier by using more appropriate weapons for certain monsters.

It’s fun end game content regardless but yeah the mechanics may not be the best.

unsure if lance sucks now or if i am now bad at lancing

Because I inevitably go overboard and make all the possible weapon trees, which takes forever, and never get around to playing the game.
