For now I am mostly going to stick tightly to Bows so I don't see a lot of need for really tightly tuning my Blast set up, when it's not going to be more damage efficient outside of Safi and maybe Tempered Ruiner Nerg.

Next mission, seething bazelgeuse. Boy did I spend a lot of time on fire. Thankfully Bazel is pretty easy, even subspecied.

I finally captured Gold Rathian and then another Gold Rathian spawns while I'm mining / hadn't left immediately. I gank that one, too, and with those two kills and the Arena kill of the Gold Rathian, I finally build the mixed armor set I was gunning for from Blackveil Val Hazaak and Gold Rathian.

The quest in the Arena to kill Gold Rathian goes away after one success and I then capture another Gold Rathian.....but the Arena quest doesn't return. Is it gone forever? I dunno. At least I have the armor for now, though.

This allows me to solo Raging Brachy. I feel pretty good, so I open the now unlocked optional quest up and have a group. It's a good group, we kill it with one death (not me). The next two times I do the quest with an open group....people dying left and right, it doesn't go well. And no Reactors in any of that. I am now thinking just soloing him might be better. Sigh.

This armor set from Blackveil / Gold Rathian is ridiculous in the "I'm not going to die" sense, even if dps lowers a bit.

Next is maybe look for a Safi group? /eyeballs ZombiePenguin and user.

The special arenas cycle in and out of availability at random after you complete them at least once.

Safi' will drop at least two of whatever style of weapon you have equipped when you claim your event rewards. Just make sure you have a bow equipped, and you should be able to score all 5 elemental bows pretty easily

As a melee class, Bagel 2 is even easier than the original. Most of the explosives are sent way far away and explode quickly, compared to long term mines dropping all over where you want to be. Even his ultimate move isn't so scary once you learn it. Once you hear the sound, just run out between the explosions, his dive bomb has a much smaller area than it looks. Worst case, you get hit by the normal damage purple explosion...even if the main explosion hits you, it won't one shot and you have time to max potion. The best is to set a shock trap where he lands, which will interrupt the explosion. If I had to guess, this fight (and the ultimate move) were too strong in testing and they pulled a last minute nerf and overcompensated. He's probably the easiest threat 3 in the game, once you learn the fight.

I did Safi on PS4 the past weekend and found it pretty easy actually. Only got two kills across a bunch of fights, but was regularly getting 13+ with at several times 3-person groups. Glad it's not as much of a pain as KT was.

Seething Bagel has a metric shit ton of health but it's so nice not to have to deal with him shitting active bombs on you midswing the way the old one use to do literally all the time

i also appreciate the great spiritvein event with tempered nerg so, so much

it's a chiller fight with armor augmented up to the new cap, it's no bullshit, and i don't have to spend half the fight running around in circles picking up 75 drops for the 0 gems, which jesus fucking god, thank you

Oh jeez, finally getting so many Great Spiritvein gems, my wishlist suddenly dinged so much for getting them.

Now this is probably 100% coincidence, but I went into the Guiding Lands, killed a Teostra, a Glavenus and a Savage Deviljho (all of them tempered) and I got 5 great spiritvein gems from them in total. I seriously doubt they changed the drop rates, but it's amazing that I had done at least 10 tempered kills there before with absolutely no drops, and now I got 5 in 3 kills.

Running into Velkhana randomly during Optionals before I'm supposed to meet it in Assigned is really strange. I've been sitting at the Glavenus assigned fight for ages; I went back and got some of the layered HR armors from the events that returned, leveled up more charms, and now I'm clearing out MR optionals (and unlocking arenas). I'm in a big fight against my first MR Diablos out in the sands, when suddenly a music track I've never heard before starts playing, and there's a giant ice dragon going absolutely bonkers on everything.

Diablos ran underground. I followed as fast as possible.

I do like it when a game terrifies me, but. Should that really be happening?

Also I'm really liking some of these Narcacuga pieces. Evasion boosts on decent armor, at last! I can finally Fume Greatsword this game. My enjoyment pretty much tripled instantly once I had a viable roll, especially now that I know how bad Sharpness loss can be (blocking actually hurts).

I also randomly used my first-ever Dung Pod because some happened to be nearby on some quest, and it was life-changing to realize how easy it is to make the annoying thing go away. I've had so much frustration dealing with aggravating Rathalos/Rathian double-teaming that never ends. I can see myself carrying these around permanently now. MR Optionals in particular seem to just love two and even three monster showdowns with no Turf Wars.

Seriously, just add me on steam and @me @Bizazedo - i'm always down to hunt with friends.

Also, just fair warning about the Blackviel bonus: It's a bit deceptive on how it works. it ONLY kicks in if your health bar is all green. Otherwise you're stuck with the very slow and awful red health recovery - which kinda forces you into gemming in Recovery Speed Up, which is awful.

personal opinion is that frankly, if you have access to health augments (MR 100 required i believe if you're doing end-tier weapons like Safi or Raging), you're better off building for damage and taking health augments - the free healing it generates is vastly superior, and the safety net that Golden/Blackviel provides really falls apart when you're dealing with tempered (particularly tempered elder) threats. It's also useless if there's any kind of environmental damage ticks happening (Effluvia in Guiding Lands/RV is a big culprit here, Raging Brachy's TIME TO BRAWL arena, etc)

You'll see a bigger uptick in survivability just having max-upgraded armor and slotting in the relevant elemental res + taking the relevant elemental mantle than you will running BV + GR. This is speaking from experience! I tried a BV/GR build and found it a real let down. Nowadays i only really die if i screw up vs a Tempered, and even then it takes me getting unlucky to outright kill me

That said, if you have the slots, there's nothing wrong with running just plain Divine Blessing 3 - it's potent enough to be a useful boost. I'm very pro on cutting survivability to the bone though. The way the game is put together, offense directly increases your survivability thanks to flinch thresholds and faster clear times. and making your health augment stronger and it's not like you're really running anything else on your weapon.

I will say however, i think the pure meta ALL OFFENSE NO DEFENSE builds go too far - You should tweak to your preference, and if you're more comfy with a couple of defensive skills in your build, that's worth gunning for. Cant DPS if you're dead. Personally, i go for Health Augment 2/Defense Augment 1 on my weapon, Evasion +5 & Health boost +3 on my armor, and eat for Elemental Res L (...or i guess attack boost vs anything that's non-elemental, because at the level of endgame defense, Defense Boost L is sorta worthless)

divine blessing 5 is good as hell, so we're clear

i would drop vaal like a rock though, that teeny bit of healing over time is just not bringing anything to the table in master rank

as far as defense skills go health boost and stun resist are gonna have the biggest overall effects, then divine blessing. after that the only defense skill i tend to run is recovery up because i have it on every fucken combo jewel on the planet. i do like it as a skill since health boost without any recovery up means you have to double chug after big hits if you don't have any max potions, which is obnoxious. it also applies to your health augment.

edit: oh yeah, and evade window is good on some fights (lol rajang) and elemental resist is a no-brainer on kirin or anything ice or water, where your defense is likely shit because every good set is weak to it.

I'm just lazy and run evade 5 on everything - I can't be bothered having that many different sets, let alone leaning didn't Dodge timings. Give me all the evade frames. No, all of them.

Divine blessing 5 I admit I never liked - it's 60% of the time or something, which is real good! But feels too unreliable to me, I prefer consistency.

Stun Res 3 is Hella good though, that's a great suggestion.

Also recovery up applies to all healing sources. Including health augments or safis regen.

(Actually that's a point - my current set uses Safi 3 piece, so I get all that delicious healing too)

divine blessing i find valuable in fights where i take a lot of smaller hits. it's not great on like nergy where you're getting slugged for two-thirds of your health periodically, but it's a godsend on like, rajang or brachy or velkhana where they're just flinging shit at you nonstop

i run evade window on some sets and it is definitely helpful but i don't know how much mileage i'm getting out of it after hundreds and hundreds of hours of habitually attempting to space out hits instead of i-framing them

edit: of course iceborne is the NO SPACE, ONLY I-FRAME expansion, so it's something i probably should work on

Yeah, I'm not MR 100 yet :(. I may hit it in the next few days / in a week or so. I really want those health augments on the weapon.

The amount of defense I'm running is obscene, though, and with the GR / BV gear, plus the decos, it feels like it's literally impossible to kill me unless I try. Although, to your point Zombie, I agree greater dps is also helps survivability. I am planning on shifting from this super defense build to more dps once I get more used to the fights and also have access to the health augments. Up to this point I was relying on potions, hence my desire for the GR / BV gear.

I think the only thing I can augment my weapons with right now is more defense, hilariously. Coalesce and Divine Blessing and all the Recovery / Recovery Speed is hilarious.

This current build does make Raging Brachy braindead easy, though.

Five monsters in 50, but they're all super weak, so you can crush em.

Crowns are size related, yes. Just achievement related really I'm currently around @Bizazedo so if you want to team up and flatten some of those

Yeah, monsters' spawn size is in a range, which differs for each monster. Successfully hunt a monster that spawns in the top 10% of that range and you get a large gold crown; hunt one in the bottom 10%, you get a small gold crown (there's also silver crowns for the respective 20%, but gold crowns overwrite them so meh). There's an achievement for your first small crown, your first 10 small crowns, and getting a small crown for 'nearly' every monster (monsters with fixed size, like Zorah, and monsters added after launch as dlc, like Rajang, don't count). Same roster of achievements for large gold crowns.

If you check your Monster Field Guide you can see what crowns you have for what monsters.

Was up at 4:30 this morning thanks to the utter stupidity that is the human body (22mo is cutting molars; "intelligent design" my ass). Since the new Animal Crossing day doesn't roll over until 5, decided to hop onto GU and help out a random.

Took down hyper Astalos and then everyone left the room. Ok. Kiddo was down so I spent a few minutes making sure she was truly out (been burned by THAT before) by selling off excess monster parts from my inventory.

I just got to MR70, and I am hoping to kill some Silver Rathalos, I now have my Coral Highlands Guiding Lands area at level 6. I looked but ther doesn't seem to be an introductory quest like there was for Yian Garuga, Rajan, and Stygian Zinogre.

So do I just wait around for him to show and maybe hope I get him?

I added you. I was just taking care of some odds and ends the past two days irl.

    In a nutshell, yes.

I'd offer to summon some Silvers for you (I have piles), but i cannot invite you into my Guiding lands until you're MR 100. Derpy, i know.

I'm literally gonna go shove some food into the oven now, but ic an come help hunt after that @user

There's an event quest right now with a silver Rathalos so you can just skip the RNG. I think MR70 is enough to do it.

ugh, the 3rd fight in iceborne being a monster with a poison that kills this fast is not a very fun reintroduction to monster hunter at all.

Reasonable and balanced armor set, very fair.

I wonder if I'd git gud if I stopped eating Max Potions like candy and running HB3, or if I'd just cart a whole lot forever.

    Hmm.

...Why arent you running health boost 3? It stacks with food and max potions!

you can have 200 max hp! IT REALLY HELPS

(Also i've seriously considered taking mega pots out of my set - i only chug max and ancients at this point. megas get used to top up between thing fights when i'm moving around i guess)

I am running HB3. I'm saying, maybe I'd get better at the game if I didn't give myself so much room to eat hits. I clear fights at a decent speed, but I wouldn't be shocked if I'm spending like a third of any run eating or drinking my health back.

You should still run it, because otherwise you get into one hit zone with late game monsters. They HURT.

Just drink less! Hit things with sword! get hp back! (Seriously i have to be sub 10% to consider healing, otherwise i just charge in and smash things with my sword. Heal augment does work, makes hunter stronk)

It's a rough surprise, but if you run back in with Poison Res 3 and Paralysis Res 3, it's a chump fight.

Don't be afraid to Abandon Quest and retool when dealing with a new monster that has frustrating elements you need to build against. Sometimes I even go grind up some Charms or armor pieces if I'm lacking the decos to do it. That work will remain useful in the future anyway.

my trick against every monster so far is to turtle up while they thrash around and then let them have it when they get tired.
