We're raising some ducklings, and they're still little, so they just get so tired... (from the left, 2, 3, and 1 days old; one more hatched this afternoon and is still drying off in the incubator before he(she?) joins the others)

something i have never even once considered - I guess hamsters and gerbils are like...naturally occurring? They don't just....spawn in pet shops for kids and teachers to put in their classrooms?

Re-homing my Dad's Maremma dog tomorrow. Turns out we couldn't give him the life he needed, even if it was better than where he came from. He is literally going to a farm upstate. The folks coming to get him have another Maremma dog and chickens and livestock, both work from home and have older kids who can handle a big dog. He'll be a working dog with all the companionship he does or doesn't want.
It's gonna be rough, even though he didn't fit here it doesn't mean that he wasn't a very good dog, and I'm gonna miss him.

My Dad needs a companion dog. A dog to go in the woods with him and hang out while he works, things like that. He's always had Golden retreivers, which are very good companion dogs. The only reason we got this Maremma was because his last golden had passed away a couple years ago, and this dog needed to be rehomed, so my folks thought they would give it a go. The problem was Maremma dogs have completely different personalities, instincts and requirements from Goldens, and my dad was not prepared to meet those needs.
At some point, probably next year, start keeping eyes open for another golden, or lab, or some kind of mix that incorporates one of those two. A dog that loves to be around it's people and wants to please them, but is big enough to go out into the woods and take care of itself.
Sounds like a shepherd mutt meets those requirements.
Yea problem is it has to be not super high energy. Shepherds usually are and my dad still has a regular job and is gone from home for a good part of the day. Need a dog who is cool sleeping under a tree during the day, or being able to run around his pen and amuse himself (11000sq feet). We're definitely not going the puppy route. I think a 2 year old dog would be perfect.

they spawn from decaying fruit roll ups
Apparently the standard domestic hamsters are largely descended from Syrian lab animals.

Learned something new today.
syrians/goldens are only a single breed, there are others
also, all modern domestic syrians are descended from a single Eve
