The thing that really weirds me out about the trailer is seeing all the bosses getting pummeled by fireballs and laser blasts and all that, and reacting at all. There's no flinching or giving some visual cue that they've been hit, they just keep carrying on with their complicated animation cycle seemingly without being aware that there are other entities in the world. Who are shooting their faces. Is this a standard bullet hell thing? I mean I guess it makes sense, if you have a boss that needs to be hit 30 times before they're down, and the whole point of the genre is that the bosses produce scheduled and deterministic patterns of attacks, then it's probably a bad idea to have them stagger or interrupt the attack when they get hit.

But it just looks odd as hell.

Yeah, that's very much a 2D shooter thing, usually the most you get is the boss flashing to indicate the shot actually did something. Some unusual shooters do have bosses react though, one series I can recall is Parodius, where in keeping with the goofy aesthetic bosses do wild takes to show you're damaging them, though not while they're attacking.

Often I think bosses only react when they are the sort of boss that is invincible, does a bunch of moves, and then lays there gasping for breath, waiting for you to hit them. They recoil after that, and the loop repeats.

Or it also makes sense in a turn-based or ATB combat system obviously.

The execution of those two concepts is way too fucking similar.

I can definitely see Cuphead's creators suing over it.

Watching the trailer a couple more times there are definitely things that could separate it from Cuphead. The Cow in the UFO for example seems to go from a standing level to a flying one. The layout of the Frog Princess boss changes dramatically at some point, etc. If they can survive the initial backlash and release some details on how they’re different from Cuphead they might have a chance.

I also finally figured out why the animation feels so flat to me, though. They aren’t doing the idle bouncing that old animation and Cuphead did. The characters actually stand still which is super weird.

I doubt legal action could be taken.

It's different enough to not step on any direct copywrite toes and game mechanics and genres are not something you can claim.

Crazy Taxi vs The Simpson's: Road Rage might have proven otherwise, but they settled.

Probably just the little plastic nub to hold it in place.

Hold it in place in what though is the real question, since it's not like the Switch has a holder ala the DS.

Do they expect people to hold the Switch vertically with joy-cons attached like that picture? Please go all-in on the touch interface so you can just use the tablet and stylus if you want.

Only for Brain Age Level 1 tests.

For Level 2, you have to hold it diagonally.

For Level 3, you have to hold it upside down.

For Level 4, you have to hold it backwards.

OK, I believe X is one of the games that came before T and has a cameo mission in T, right?

So is X the one with the two goth androids or the one with the actual wizards?

I think they're just avoiding the potential of confusion if they just showed the tablet, without the joycons.

I picked up FAR: Lone Sails on a whim - it's been on my Steam wishlist for a while, and I was looking for something that I could knock out during a weekend - and I just finished it (about 3 hours total). What a pleasant and unique experience. It was exactly what I wanted. $15.

In it, you control a little dude aboard a ship that's moving through a futuristic wasteland, and you have to manage the various systems of the ship in real time - fueling and activating the engine, putting out fires, solving puzzles when they get in your way - so it's kinda like a real-time FTL, but as a solitary and atmospheric experience, and with platforming and Limbo/Inside-like puzzle solving. Very relaxing after a long day.

Actually, if you've played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, it's very similar to that (but not co-op). You jump from station to station to keep your ship moving, and you collect stuff along the way. I recommend it.

    More thoughts on Valfaris.

I'm still blown away by the environments, graphics, music and general atmosphere of this. The colours are so lurid. The environments are gross and disgusting, but also very detailed. I just reached a pointt where two enemy factions are fighting each other and it's all chaotic goodness.

At times it becomes so difficult as to be unfair... but the respawns are really quick, so you can keep at it. Being able to swap weapons at the restart point adds a lot in terms of changing ones strategy.

Retail copies of online only games with frequent updates are stupid, frankly. Overwatch now doesn't even resemble the version released to stores years ago. So what would be on the physical copy?

Also spent $50 yesterday and picked up:

    River City Girls
    Castle Crashers
    Think of the Children

Think of the Children is hilarious and worth the $3 if you have a coop partner. It's a little buggy and laggy but it's still good fun.

River City Girls is really, really good. Wife and I had to grind a bit for the first boss but it wasn't too bad. The music is incredible!

Haven't tried Castle Crashers yet but it was one of my favorite indie games back in the day.

To me, it's less about whether or not the cartridge would be stupid or not, but rather how wasteful it is to make tons of plastic cases that serve no purpose. If you want a retail presence, that's what POSA cards are for.

Nope, I'm pretty sure even practice mode and bot matches connect to a server.
