Still waiting to see what happens when Epic stops buying exclusives and games launch same day on Steam. With their lower cut and money going out that store has to be running at a huge loss. There's several indie games on EGS that have never publicly said anything about how well their sales numbers were. Also what happens once there are hundreds of games on EGS and the visibility drops like on Steam?
Pitchford said BL3 was double the peak concurrent of BL2 on PC at launch and based on a tweet by ZhugeEx (analyst) is about 250k. So if 1 in 4 owners were concurrent (which seems usual during launches based on when Steam Spy was still active) they sold 1 mil copies at let's say $60 average (special editions cost more and then sites like GMG had discounts) it's $60 mil minus 7% cut (Epic normally takes 12% but using Unreal Engine gains another 5% cut) is $4.2 mil. With the overhead costs (and customer support) I don't see how the store will be profitable without Fortnite/Unreal money.
When they announced EGS with its lower cut they were saying that 30% was overcharging, so presumably the store would be making money not counting exclusivity deals and free games.
Epic had been downsizing the QA department through automation before Fortnite released and made their QA department hellish for the employees.
Yeah, of all the things Epic's been splashing their money around on better working conditions doesn't seem to be one of them.
It's been a pretty longstanding criticism that Tim Sweeney likes to fancy himself as champion of the little dev while treating his own employees like shit, a dichotomy that he does not seem interested in resolving.
There isn't a ton of info on the costs of running those online launchers with the services they provide.
The most I can remember is that PSN multiplayer went to a monthly subscription with the PS4 because of the costs not making it profitable enough.
There is also whatever the heck Nintendo is doing with its online service pricing.
I've always suspected they went to a subscription for PS+ just because xbox live proved that people would pay for it and the sony console wasn't the underdog system anymore with the PS4 so "free online multiplayer vs. paid subscription for online multiplayer" wasn't needed as a selling point to compete with microsoft anymore

I seem to recall them talking a big game about how tying the subscription service to online play would allow them to improve the online experience and look where that got us

To be fair, PS4 PSN is so much better than PS3 on a functional level
PS3 download times were a nightmare and everything was incredibly clunky
It isn't a revelation, but it is definitely an improvement

I would tell you that PS4 download times are a nightmare, from my experience

Just based on the username issues with the playstation network it's obvious that thing was cobbled together as fast as they could without too much forethought for the future, or that forethought was just ignored to get it out faster. I can certainly see a system level programmer bringing it up and higher ups rejecting it due to time and cost constraints. "Nobody will ever want to change their username!".
I also suddenly remember some of the very first names I saw on Xbox live in halo 2 in the mid 2000s and how two of them in one match were openly antisemitic.
The old infrastructure needed to support Xbox Live for the original Xbox preventing improvements for the 360 Xbox Live was the justification MS gave for shutting down the Xbox Live service for the original Xbox.
Tech companies are rarely very forward thinking when building infrastructure.

damn that's actually a really good deal given the budget
like substantially lowers your risk on development
i wonder if whatever sales you missed because of the EGS 1-year exclusive will be recouped the year after
like you do another marketing push and launch your game on steam in 2020 with a "complete" edition, DLC is rolled in
do you still get your big week 1 steam launch numbers?
I will probably buy it.

Anybody played Gadgeteer VR? It's coming to the Quest and it looks pretty cool. Its on Steam currently.
In Arkham Knight there's a sidequest where you go around fighting Penguin's goons and destroying vaults of black market guns he's running. On the last one I knocked a guy out such that he landed straddling the doorframe of the open bank vault. Shutting the giant vault door on the guy probably would have been enough to kill him. Setting off explosives in a vault full of explosives was enough to make the character model stretch out to around three times his previous height. I checked in detective mode and there was about six inches between each of the bones in his spinal column and the vital status read "unconscious" which I guess is technically true.

for those playing bl3
is the world more dynamic than bl2?
the bl2 world is huge, but it feels like a circa 2008 mmo
npcs don't really move or do anything
there are huge open spaces that have nothing in them but trash mobs
the world resets itself every time you leave
i finally got fed up with my bl2 playthrough on the "rescue roland" mission
where the game makes you go through a sequence of fighting regular borderlands goons in a dungeon and then you have to fight far too many robots
and at the end of that sequence, right before the bossfight, they present a teleporter waypoint so you can go back to town and sell all the excess shit you got in the dungeon
but as turns out when you're done in town that it was a one way teleporter, so you discover that you need to do the entire dungeon all over again
it is such a bafflingly bad design decision
the game has so much backtracking in it
i just don't have the time for this kind of bullshit anymore

I mean, the fast travel station there is a different color and indicates that it is a one way ride right on the machine itself. If you left before the boss fight, that's kind of on you.

You guys remember shadowrun???
I remember that Shadowrun game being pretty decent, and that it would have been much better received with literally any other name attached to it.

Xbox Live still does AFAIK
I wish I had a quest. They look so cool.
Do they still give you one free name change? I seem to remember them offering that back in the day
They didn't do free name changes back when I got a 360.
